Component | Definition | Role in Learning and Development | Neurons | A neuron is known as an excitable cell that can process and transmit information through electrical and chemical signals. Neurons are the core components of the nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord and nervous system. | Neurons begin developing in the early stages, like when a child is in the womb. Language and early stimulation is also tied in how children will interact. Interactions on a daily basis can stimulate a child’s brain. | Neurotransmitters | These are chemicals that transmit signals across a synapse from one neuron to another neuron. Most neurotransmitters are about the size of larger proteins or peptides. | A neurotransmitter plays a part in learning and in memory. So for classwork, it is important for a student to have this In their brain to function properly. | Axon | This is a nerve fibre, it is a long slender projection of a nerve cell. This conducts electrical impulses away from the neuron’s cell body. The function of the axon is to transmit information to different neurons. | A axon is a nerve receiver, in this case it can transmit information. So it can transmit information to other parts of the brain for the child to learn properly. | Myelin sheath | This is a material that forms a layer usually around the axon of a neuron. It is essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system. It is an outgrowth of a type of glial cell. In humans the production of myelin begins in the 14 week of fetal development. | When learning a new skill, the myelin helps process that in the brain. This helps the student to process information that they just learned. | Dendrites | Dendrites are the branched projections of a neurons that act to propagate the electrochemical stimulation received from other neural cells to the cell

Left Brain vs Right Brian

...Left Brain Vs. Right Brian The brain is an incredibly complex organ with differentiated parts that work in mysterious ways. It’s also a self-organized structure that is highly connected. According to Eric Jensen, author of The New Paradigm of Teaching, “Much of the original work of Nobel Laureate Roger Spietry, who discovered the functioning differences between the left and right hemispheres of the brain, remains valid today. But the spin put on his research also remains today (Eric J. 2008).” Today research still goes on trying to achieve more knowledge about the brain. Ask you, how the left does and right brain impacts learning. In this paper I’ll be sharing with you the fact from research and how it impacts our learning. Research identifies the left-brain as the “academic brain,” because educators generally emphasize its processes in the traditional everyday classroom, resulting in certain groups using hemisphere specialization to explain limitations of traditional learning. Although the left brain may be more dominant for calculation, math and logical abilities, it has no biological mandate for language, but it does contain soft biases in information processing that are preferential to language skills. The right brain is the side that is most known for its intuitive, holistic, and synthesizing. The right hemisphere is intuitive and responds to demonstrated instructions. It also problem solves with hunches and looks for patterns and configurations. The...

Left Brain vs Right Brain

...The Left Brain vs. The Right Brain: How does this Impact Learning The brain is one of the vital components of the nervous system. It is also one of the most involved and extraordinary parts amongst a variety of organs in the human being. When it comes to body weight it only responsible for two to three percent, but when it comes to body energy it uses twenty through twenty- three percent (Sprenger 1999). When the mind tries to do too many things at once it may refuse to cooperate, because the brain is always seeking information. The brain is made up of two hemispheres which are the left and the right hemisphere. They talk through the corpus callosum, which is just a bulky group of fibers (Sprenger 1999). Although both hemispheres are the same in their appearance they have different functions. The left hemisphere of the brain is more of an analysis, linear thinking, ordering, and it require locating organization within everything that it does. “The left hemisphere is also an expert at in order processing, analyzing all received information, even illustration information” (Webb 1983). With the left hemisphere we try to create logic of the world, and create peace to it (Faith 2003). So in other words when we are thinking, we are using this side of the hemisphere. It also controls the right part of the body and receives information from that side too (Webb 1983). In compare with the left hemisphere, the right hemisphere is alarmed by the complete image and the spatial...

Left vs Right

...Left Brain Compared to Right Brain Joel M. Flores COLL 100-190 American Military University Shannon Voyles Left Compared Right Sided Brain Learners Left and right sided brain learners learn through different pathways of input to comprehend. When considering emotions both sides of the brain are responsible for emotions; the right side is known for negative emotions and the left side is known for happy emotions. The left side of the brain is responsible for language and math learning. As a left sided brain learner a person is a logical detail learner that focuses on facts and rules of language. The left sided brain learner is also focused on math and science in relation to pattern perception. These individuals are able to learn strategies through numbers, objects or verbal cues. The right side of the brain is responsible for nonverbal communication, recognizing shapes/patterns and auditory recognition. Right sided brain learners always are trying to take in the larger picture of issues and are often known as the philosopher of the learning group. There are some that do not believe that individuals are left or right sided brain learners at all, but have brain that developed differently and compensate for the different development. Brain regions with more gray matter in one hemisphere may develop lateralization of brain functions ascribed to those regions. Alternately, if a functional asymmetry develops in a brain region, it is possible that there may...

...playlist in my phone nor do I listen to music all the time, I realize that I take advantage of music a lot. Music helps me to improve my concentration and to develop relationships; however, there is a negative impact for me. Personally, listening to music helps me study efficiently by increasing my focus. According to the left-right brain theory, in the article from pychology.about.com, left brain and right brain handle different tasks. While the left side's function is to engage in academic activities such as critical thinking, numbers, reasoning, and math problems; the right side is considered to be in a resting state involved in emotion, arts, imagination, music, and the creative abilities. When we are paying attention to deal with a specific task, only one part of the brain is working, and the other is resting, which easily leads to distraction. For example, whenever I do my math homework, I usually lose my concentration on it just after five or ten minutes by day dreaming. However, if I listen to music while studying I can concentrate better. In this way, music does fill up the right side of my brain, or in other words music keeps the brain busy, so listening to music prevents me from getting distracted. Finally, psychologists advise people to listen to music when they need to focus on work. In addition to facilitating my concentration, music has an intrinsic power of gathering people, no matter where or who they are; I met many interesting people through music. In...

Healing Modality

...nidra means 'psychic sleep' i.e. sleep with full awareness. In psychology, the state achieved in yoga nidra is termed the hypnogogic state, a state between sleep and wakefulness. It takes one’s brain to the alpha state and eventually the even deeper theta wave state. Here, without effort or strain, one is able to tap into his/her own source of health, abudance , intuition, and creativity. Role of a nurse or healing practitioner during yoga nidra. The presence and voice of the healing practitioner is crucial during the therapy. Yoga Nidra is practiced in a comfortable position while lying down. The healing practitioner guides the practitioner through a series of simple instructions and breathing exercises .These include a scan of the body or visual imagery, which occupies the mind thus preventing it from getting involved in the ordinary mind-chatter that absorbs our usual consciousness. Within a short time, one becomes submerged in the alpha state, in which the brain rhythms fall into the internal silent space. Once the body is relaxed and the mind is calm, all energies become focused on the Third Eye, i.e the inner sanctuary found between the eyebrows. One is now able to simultaneously access both the intuitive and the logical left brain, and the insightful right brain. This naturally and effortlessly and naturally brings one into integration, and experience deep relaxation and still remain conscious and conscious. Historical/Cultural roots of this healing...

...to study the different functionalities of the left and right hemispheres. These methods include the sodium amytal test, the dichotic listening test, and functional brain imaging moreover, the relation between handedness and language lateralization method.   In the sodium amytal test, patients’ language abilities are assessed by a neurosurgeon before going into surgery. In the sodium amytal test, sodium amytal is injected into the carotid artery on a side of the neck (Pinel, 2009). The injection anesthetizes the hemisphere on that side for a few minutes, which allows capacities of the other hemisphere to be properly assessed (Pinel, 2009).   In the dichotic listening test, "Three pairs of spoken digits are presented through earphones; the digits of each pair are presented simultaneously, one to each ear" (Pinel, 2009). An example of this process may be a subject maybe hearing a particular sequence 3, 9, 2 through one ear and at the same time 1, 6, 4 through the other ear; and then the subject will be asked to report all the digits at the end of the sequence. The test reveals that the left hemispere is the one that most people show dominance in because they hear slightly better in their right ear.   In functional brain imaging, while the subject engages in some activity, such as reading, the activity of the brain is monitored by positron emission tomography (PET) or functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) (Pinel, 2009).   The relation between handedness and language lateralization...

R-Directed Thinking

...R-directed Thinking Most of us desire to become a lawyer, an accountant or a computer programmer because they are well paid and decent. But, this thought may be outdated. Daniel Pink in his book ‘ A Whole New Mind’ put forward that the future belongs to a very different kind of person with a very different kind of mind. A new world in which “right brain” qualities-inventiveness, empathy, meaning-predominate will substitute for the era of “left brain” dominance, and the Information Age engendered. In this book, the author first starts to describe how our brains work from a high-level point of view. The human brain is divided into two hemispheres, a left and a right part. The author explains the differences between these two parts of our brains, stating that left-brain (L-directed) thinking implies more logical, linear reasoning while right-brain (R-directed) thinking is more holistic and artistic. The message that he is trying to bring across is that while society highly values L-directed thinking, R-directed thinking is getting more and more important in the world of tomorrow. Daniel divides L-directed thinking into three types: abundance, Asia and automation. Abundance has satisfied, even oversatisfied, the material needs of millions. They pursue the multifunctional goods. However, for business, it’s no longer enough to create a product that’s reasonably priced and adequately functional. Abundance have to pay more attention to beautiful, unique and meaningful to satisfied...

Cerebral Lateralization and Functionality

...Cerebral lateralization is the process which the two hemispheres of the brain increasingly specialized in particular tasks. There are four methods of cerebral lateralization to study the functions of the right and left hemisphere of the brain. These methods include the sodium amytal test, the dichotic listing test, and functional brain imaging. The forth method of cerebral lateralization is comparing the effects of unilateral left and right hemisphere brain lesions. The sodium amytal test is a language lateralization that is given to patients before neurosurgery. During this test the patient is injected with a small amount of sodium amytal into the carotid artery on one side of the neck. The injection anesthetizes the hemisphere on that side for a few minutes, thus allowing the capacities of the other hemisphere to be assessed (Pinel, 2011). The patients are then asked to recite things such as numbers or letters to see if they still have the ability to speak. The dichotic listening test is a noninvasive test. This test can also be given to health people. In the standard dichotic listening test, three pairs of spoken numbers are presented through earphones; the numbers of each pair are presented simultaneously, one to each ear (Pinel, 2011). Then the individual is asked to repeat the numbers that they heard. In functional brain imaging, an individual reads or performs some kind of activity and the brain is examined by positron emission tomography or functional magnetic resonance...

For example: In the manufacturing company, manufacturing department, finance department and the sales department are the line department and these department are essential for the existence of the organisation because manufacturing company cannot survive without these departments. As these departments manufacture the product and arrange the finance for the company and also sell the products. Staff department: In contrast, Staff departments are the department, which exists to help the line department in its activities. The staff departments are to advise, counsel and assist the line departments. Like in manufacturing company, the department, which is not manufacturing department, finance department and sales department, is a staff department. There is also one more point to contrast these department like if the company has to reduce the people or department then they would like to eliminate staff department rather than...

Brain Plasticity

...Maranda Francisco's brain. The young girl had suffered from epilepsy caused by an extremely rare disease called Rasmussen's encephalitis. While seizures had affected only her right side, she was rapidly losing the ability to walk, talk, eat, and learn. She was on constant medication and lived her life in brief intervals between convulsions. As often as 120 times a day, and sometimes only three minutes apart, seizures made the right side of her body useless. Since the surgery, Maranda has not suffered a single seizure. In kindergarten, she was swimming and taking dancing lessons. In the 2 years following the surgery, she grew 9 inches, learned to jump rope, and became a local celebrity. She talked normally, and her memory was intact. She walked with a slight limp, although therapy helped to minimize it. "Over the long haul, I'd anticipate she'll be able to live quite a norma1life, with a mild weakness on the right side," says Benjamin Carson, head of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University, who per- formed the operation. After 10 hours in the operating room, Maranda woke up with the words, "I love you, Mommy and Daddy." Maranda's speech had already migrated to the right side of her brain. Part of her amazing recovery is attributed to the fact that her right hemisphere had already taken over many of the functions of its deteriorating left-side counterpart. Maranda is not an isolated case. Brain hemispherectomy...

...Left vs. Right Brain Diana Webb COLL100 AMU Sharie Adamson Left vs. Right Brain The brain is above and marvelous to all other organs. It does not just controls the human thought's, but it also controls the entire human body as a whole. The brain is divided into two sections left and right hemisphere that controls different functions like thinking, physical movement, and controls all organs. The left and right hemisphere is made with approximately 100 billion cells ( Johnson n.d.). Reason is so important is because it sends out information to the organs, it initiates bodily movement, it controls and holds memory. Hemispheres and Corpus Collusum Most individuals are stuck with the myth of the left handed person that uses the left side of the hemisphere. According to Jeff Anderson, the author and professor of neuroradiology at the University of Utah says: "It's absolutely true that some brain functions occur in one or the other side of the brain, language tends to be on the left, attention more on the right” (Novotney, 2013 pg 4). Studies have also showed that there is no evidence of the brain being stronger on the right or left hemisphere The left hemisphere has its own special functions. The left hemisphere dominates the functions of the brain. It controls speech, language processing and logical reasoning. The left hemisphere is not capable of handling vision, touch or identifying objects. The left hemisphere controls the entire right side of the brain. The right...
