Brave Heart and Kings Speech, might be centuries apart but for me are the most historic and state mental movies ever produced. The characters have all done justice to their roles; the storyline is a tremendous piece of art that cannot be replaced by any other movie. Both have their own stands and relate to situations in different times and conditions.
The two have many common grounds and share themes that are portrayed in different scenes through different perspectives. The movies mostly revolve around the idea of standing up for oneself and not giving up, whoever the enemy might be.
Patriotism is portrayed in Brave Heart when Mel Gibson's character William Wallas refers to the cavilary as "sons of Scotland." They agree to fight against an army almost double in size, armor and men. This battle is won.
In Kings Speech the King, is coping with a stammer to deliver a speech which is his first wartime radio broadcast on Britain's declaration of war on Germany. The struggle required to overcome the fear of stammering and of rejection is calmed down by the support of his friends and family.
In Brave Heart love is a key theme, the movie beautifully portrays that intense love can make you go lengths you never wanted to go, change decisions like William decides to fight and rebel once his love, wife is killed for abstaining the soldiers from raping her. He starts a revolt against the most powerful men and dies trying.
Love, an emotion that can help you through any stage of life, as in Kings Speech, the character Queen Elizabeth is the reason that King George VI joins the therapist. She drives him to improve and believes in him that one day the speech delivered will have no stammer. She stands by him even when his brother is against him.
Family is an important part of the individual you are, the morals set in you are by your parents. In kings speech King George VI is shown to be extremely worried about how his brother is interpreting his stammer to the world as a disgrace. Whereas on the other hand he gracefully handles his daughters and go around the normal routine. Whereas in Brave Heart william as a child wants to go fight along side his father to protect him, he follows his fathers commands that a soldier needs to use his brain more than his arms.
In Kings Speech when King George VI is delivering his speech and manages to do it without a stammer his happiness is off the charts, he magnificently pulls of an amazing job by the help of the therapist
The neglect shown in BraveHeart is mostly by the England, the way the King marries off his son to the enemies daughter not realizing that his son is not happy with it. The Prince never looks or appreciates the Princess efforts or help, he defies her and makes her helpless.
Trusting another individual is hard indeed but maintaining the trust is more difficult, in Kings Speech the therapist earns the Kings trust and leads him towards success. Logue, the therapist stands by, advising him to 'say it to me as a friend' and deliver the speech whixh is his first successful delivery. Even when the King no longer needs a therapist he hires him and asks him to sit in the church when he delivers his speech. The friendship built upon trust is an outstanding balance between the cruelty of the war and the torture of not having spoken to his country.
Betrayal is a very small word but has been strongly and justifying portrayed in both movies. BraveHeart during the battle against the English where Wallas is shot by an archer shows us how when he discovers that the man who gave his word to help him has betrayed him the emotion and expressions are shown elegantly, making the audience feel pain. Not only does Wallas suffer from it but the Lord also hates himself for betraying Wallas and attacks his own father later, wishing he was dead. When the princess whispers to the King on his deathbed that the baby she is going to give birth to will not carry his blood the pain is shown on how he coughs and refuses to eat.
BraveHeart restores trust amongst civilians. Many friendships are built upon it. When Wallas is hunting a deer he is attacked, but the attackers son saves Wallas and helps him through his whole journey. Hermish always stands by Wallas never second questioning him as he trusts him enough to put himself in danger. But here we also see that the English also break trust when one of the men leaks secrets to the Princess's private caretaker about Wallas. Also when the Lord of Yorkshank holds hands with English and betrays their Scottish men.
Knowledge is a great wisdom. Where in Kings Speech the therapist explores various ways of helping King overcome the stammer, in Brave Heart wallas uses knowledge to overthrow an army, unite people as well as win the trust and loyalty of the men.
Death plays its part in many different ways, for the King in Kings Speech the death of his father is rather sad but its thd fact that he has to rule the country that bothers him more. In Brave Heart the death of William Wallas revolts a whole country to take a step and fight for freedom, which they get.
Kings Speech shows us if only one person believes in you and helps you fight, work hard enough that anything can be achieved and is possible. “King George VI: Listen to Me! Listen to Me! Lionel Logue: Why would I waste my time listening to you? King George VI: because I have a voice”
BraveHeart shows us that if one man takes a stand for what he truly believes in and is right then he can lead a whole country towards freedom, “He who fought, fought for freedom.” But he has to overcome greed and selfishness to see clearly the path to which he wants to walk on. “His passion captivated a woman, His courage inspired a nation. His heart defied a king.”
