National stereotypes in Braveheart

1) English part
In general Scotland is portrayed like a country with a very beautiful landscape (though it is raining a lot) and a very proud people. In the song, ‘Scotland the brave’, which describes Scotland as a land with a striking scenery, we get a picture of Scotland as a very idyllic country (For ex: Staunch are the friends that greet you,
kind as the love that shines from fair maiden's eyes). However, we also get a picture of Scotland as a proud country, fighting for its rights (in the film and in the song as well: Now feel the blood a-leaping,
High as the spirits of the old Highland men). In Braveheart, the Scottish are not allowed to stick to their traditions (the sack pipes are strictly forbidden) nevertheless, they do it on the sly. It seems like they have a lot of old national traditions. An example of this could be their special way to celebrate; we watch a wedding in the movie, and their own ways of saying goodbye (the funeral scenes).
From an English point of view in the movie, they seem like a very primitive people. However, it is obvious in the movie, that the Scottish take advantage of their primitiveness but also their different way of thinking. For example in the battle scene, with their spears made out of wood, where they wait, and then raise them toward the English horse riders. A scene where the Scottish flag is being used, by being painted in their faces.

A description of a Scottish stereotype in Braveheart, could be: a broad-shouldered long haired (often with a messy beard) man, wearing a kilt and no underpants, who loves to fight and with a great survival instinct.

The English men, living in Scotland under the king’s command, are portrayed extremely authoritarian and tyrannizing. They love being powerful, and are not afraid to show who has the power. They are a lot more structured. An obvious example of this could be in the battles towards the Scottish. The English army is a lot more structured than the Scottish, nevertheless the Scottish are the victorious part.
During the movie, we are watching it through the Scottish eyes. The Scottish are portrayed as fair, moral and civil men. The English are portrayed cruel, evil and ruthless. Especially William Wallace and his fellow Scotsmen are portrayed very brave, proud, strong and fearless.

The Case Study of Mang Inasal

...Mang Inasal: Humble Stories and Where They Are Today!!! The epitome of success could never be achieved if one did not set a foot at the bottom of the staircase. Did you know that Mang Inasal, one of the most preferred dining places of the Filipinos today, can prove this? Where Did Mang Inasal start? Establishing its first branch in a 3-year-old unoccupied space in Robinsons Mall Carpark, Iloilo on December 12, 2003, Mang Inasal quickly became a hit for the Ilonggos. Of course, it would not be done without the efforts of its owner, Mr. Edgar Sia II. After conducting a research on what could be the common “taste” of the 16 regions in the Philippines, Sia figured out that “barbecue” (or simply, Inasal in Ilonggo) is the mass appeal—a feat that has been capturing the hearts and empty stomachs of the Filipino people. Before enterprising his business to Luzon, specifically in Manila, Mang Inasal opened its second outlet in Roxas City, Sia’s hometown. With this, his business bloomed in the provinces to 26 branches; a proof that his Inasal has really caught the Filipino tastebuds. In 2006, he finally opened his outlet in Manila, a venture that he referred to as the “make-or-break” city. It was during this year when the city was in the middle of rice shortage (and as we all know, rice is a primary food for the Filipinos). This was where he opened the “Unli Rice” promo, which was only supposed to run for two months. Seeing that it has attracted more customers, the promo became...

Essentials of a True Hero

...The Essentials of a True Hero The pervasive theme of leadership has been embodied in many different forms, such as novels and films. In particular, the theme of leadership has been directly associated with the attainment and protection of freedom. In Mel Gibson’s historical/mythological epic, Braveheart, several leadership styles are evident. William Wallace, Edward the Longshanks, and even the Scottish nobility all demonstrate distinct styles of leadership. Despite the difference in styles, William Wallace’s courageous and active leadership proves the most essential. Ultimately, Wallace’s undying passion and determination for freedom helps his army prevail as an underdog. In the film Braveheart, the opening scene is set during late 13th century England, which is controlled by a tyrant known as King Edward the Longshanks. His claim over the Scottish throne cause great suffering for his Scottish subjects, due to his cruelty and brutality. After a series of tragic events, which includes William Wallace losing his father and wife, Wallace seeks revenge. In the form of rebellion, Wallace begins leading a series of uprisings against Longshanks in order to free Scotland from its current tyranny. He receives intellect from the princess of Wales and meets with the Scottish nobility, where he seeks the assistance of Robert the Bruce to unite the clans. The Scots are confronted by Longshanks at the Battle of Falkirk, where Wallace is betrayed by Robert the Bruce himself. Regretful of...
