...Bravery Odysseus was a virtuous and heroic leader. He and many other characters showed many acts of bravery. The bravery that Odysseus possessed was extraordinary and could have changed the story line completely if he didn’t use it as often then the story may have developed different. Odysseus’ bravery was tested in many adventures that he endured throughout the novel. This will be proven in many ways throughout the essay. Some examples of people that also showed bravery are Penelope, the herders, Tele, the suitors and even Ody’s crew. But the basic point im throwing across is that if no one had shown the bravery that they didn’t the story line could have completely gone in to a different direction. Some of the smaller characters that showed bravery every once and a while were Penelope, the herders, the suitors, and Ody’s crew. But the played a big part in the development of the story using the character trait bravery. An example of this is when Ody’s crew helped Ody using this trait. One example of this is when they were trapped in the Cyclopes’s Cave and they helped Ody build a giant six-foot long spear made out of a tree and then they helped him thrust it into the Cyclopes’s eye while he was sleeping. This was an example of bravery because they did this because they didn’t want to be eaten by the Cyclopes so they attacked him and succeeded. Not only if they hadn’t have done this then the story may have developed differently...

...History Vima How far do sources 1, 2 and 3 agree with the view that the charge of the light brigade was a disaster? On one hand there is a substantial agreement with the sources regarding the charge of the light brigade and that it was complete disaster. For example in source 1 it depicts the theme of injury and death, the newspaper referred to the majority of the soldiers as “wounded men” and when they were charging the Russian soldiers were “cutting them down” this shows that the battle of the light brigade was a disaster as there were many wounded men and vast casualties at such a short period of time. The theme of death and injury is further echoed by source 2 where it gives a more graphic representation of the theme of injury and death, The source says to back up this theme “A corporal who rode on the right was struck by a shot or shell full in the face, completely smashing it, his blood and brains bespattering us” this further backs up the theme of death and injury as the solider gives a very brutal and horrific example of death that occurred on the battlefield. Therefore this further supports source 1 that it was a disaster as there was very violent and horrific deaths. Also this was probably not the only example of horrific death on the battle field as cannonballs were flying at them from all sides. Nevertheless it is key to note that source 2 is a very credible source to use to back up this point. This is because by looking at the provenance of the source it was...

...Bravery You're walking down the street, coming home from school, and all of a sudden you hear a shrill voice calling "Help! Help!" You run toward the voice and when you run about a block up the street you smell smoke. You look up and see a house totally engulfed in flames. You see a woman on the lawn of the burning building crying, "Help! Help! My baby's inside!" "Inside the burning building?" you ask. The woman nods her head up and down. You tell her not to worry, that you'll save her baby. You run inside. Heat surrounds you. Your eyes sting and you can hardly breathe with all of the smoke, but you keep progressing because you know that you've got to save that baby. You make your way up the stairs, flames jumping at you from everywhere. You hear a young, high-pitched voice crying. You look around and see the baby to your right in a play pen crying its heart out. You grab the baby and you're about to walk downstairs when you see that the entrance to the stairway is blocked by a wall of flame. You run away from the stairs and search for another way out. You realize that you'll have to jump out a window. You eventually find one. You're hesitant, but you think that a two story fall shouldn't be too bad. Besides, you've got to get the baby and yourself out of this burning inferno. You take a running start and leap out of the window. When you land, the wind is knocked out of you. As you get up, a news van that came to film the fire decides they should get the story...

...| | Baumgardner and Crothers (2009) describe the virtue of Courage as emotional strengths that involve exercise of will in the face of opposition, external or internal. Within this virtue there are several strengths that describe an individual. For me and the person I am writing about this strength is Bravery, which is described by not shrinking from threat, challenge, difficulty or pain. My paper is on an individual whom I’ve become very close with over the past year. She has had to endure quite a bit since I’ve come to know her. It all began with her divorce that led to her being a single mother raising four boys ranging from 15 to 7. She rebounded into what appeared a stable relationship only to be misled and betrayed. She has also had to cope with her youngest child being diagnosed with diabetes. Throughout it all, she has shown a brave face, never cracking always smiling, and always willing to help anyone that was down. Instead of running into a corner and hiding, she has stood strong piecing together her life and making a good example of a strong woman for her boys. She has also championed the cause of juvenile diabetes making whomever will listen well aware of this sometime hidden or misunderstood condition. Of course, most people would say this is to be expected from a woman/mother but there is something resilient about...

...Thinking for Themselves – Anthony D’Amelio Q8 The intellectual virtue of bravery can be defined as having the ability to think for yourself and not conform to the herd’s average way of thinking. This bravery allows a person to confront ideas and beliefs that are considered to be taboo or dangerous. Having intellectual bravery enables us to determine things for ourselves, and not just accept what we have been told. The consequences for straying beyond society’s accepted viewpoints and beliefs can be very severe. Professor Timothy Leary is a person who in the 1960’s displayed intellectual bravery while telling the rest of the world to “think for yourself, and question authority”(How to Operate Your Brain). President Nixon even called him “the most dangerous man in America”. Timothy Leary is largely famous for his sacramental use of LSD. However, Leary would first conduct experiments at Harvard University[->0] under the Harvard Psilocybin Project[->1] before being fired because of the controversy surrounding his research. Despite the negative reaction by mainstream America, Leary continued to pursue his research and experimentation with psycho- active compounds, writing several books including Exo-Psychology in 1977. Leary says “Throughout human history, as our species has faced the frightening, terrorizing fact that we do not know who we are, or where we are going in this ocean of chaos, it has been the authorities, the political...

...Bravery is the only capacity even when scared half to death- Omar Bradley A quote about bravery was used to hook the readers with the theme statement that I wrote. The theme of the fictional story Rikki-tikki-tavi by Rudyard Kipling is love can make bravery stand out Rikki Tikki is a courageous character in the story, I know this because it states in paragraph 29,”He bit, indeed, but did not bite long enough, and he jumped clear of the whisking tail, leaving Nagaina torn and angry.” This shows that Rikki TIkki was brave enough to bite the snake’s head when he could’ve been bitten. His character trait helps demonstrate the thesis, because Rikki Tikki tried to fight off the snakes to save his friends. For instance, it states in the text, “Well,”...

...June’s Bravery June sacrifices herself in order to please her mother. “Tuesday of the Other June” by Norma Fox Mazer tells how June gets bullied by another girl named June. In this short story we find that June is dishonest, yet confident, as well as caring. The first reason why June is dishonest is because she doesn’t tell anyone about how the other June bullies her, not even her mother. June has always been taught to follow her mother’s rules to go to her when there is a problem. “I walk away, run away, come on home as fast as my feet will take me,” June recites. Her mother replies “Yes. You come to me. You just bring me your trouble, because I’m here on this earth to love you and take care of you”. June may tell her mother “Yes, I will go to you when I’m in trouble”, but she never told her mother about the other June. After class June’s mother would notice bruises on her arms (from the other June) but she quickly made up a short story how she got them. At swimming practice the other June shoved her into the pool. The swimming teacher got upset because no one was allowed in the water yet. June never said that it wasn’t her fault but she was pushed into the pool. June is also confident enough to stand up to the other June. Even though she is being teased she will not let the other June walk all over her. In the locker room the other June made fun of...

...The story of the Scarlet Ibis is about two brothers, one that is born with severe disabilities and the older brother who looks forward to having someone to play with. Doodle is very brave throughout the story. The first example of Doodle’s bravery is when his brother was pushing him around in the wagon and started going really fast. He started going really fast because Doodle always wanted to go everywhere he went. So he did that to try to scare the doodle. Even though at times he almost fell out of the wagon, he remained brave and didn’t tell his brother. The second example of Doodle’s bravery. is when in the story it said “I took him by the arms and stood him up he collapsed onto the grass like a half-empty flour sack”. I'm going to teach...

...think about soldiers, one of the first words to come to mind is bravery. Americans are raised in a culture that places emphasis on fighting for what one believes in; they are raised to be bold. The media influences one’s children at an early age. Children are exposed to countless heroic scenes through movies, television, and even toys. As a result, the majority of Americans are raised with a strong concept of bravery. They long to prove themselves; they yearn for the recognition of bravery. To be cowardly is seen as a sign of weakness, as a result, those deemed cowardly are often times shunned. As a result, a multitude of Americans become soldiers, in part because of a desire to protect America’s freedom, but also because one may think that being a soldier is the ultimate act of bravery. Tim O’Brien, the author of The Things They Carried, refutes this idea however, stating “I was a coward. I went to war.” O’Brien, a Vietnam War veteran, discusses his moral dilemma concerning whether or not to fight in the war in the story On the Rainy River. After deliberating with himself for the sixth day at the Tip Top Lodge, O’Brien finally comes to a conclusion, stating “I would go to war-I would kill and maybe die-because I was embarrassed not to.” O’Brien’s decision...

Being strong in one’s spirit first is important to showing a brave quality because having a strong spirit first and belief in good outcomes is the first step towards success. In the epic poem Beowulf by an unknown author, the protagonist Beowulf demonstrates J.R tolkens quote about bravery “it is not the strength of the body that counts, but the strength of the spirit” through the numerous obstacles he goes through as well as the battles he faces with the antagonist’s Grendel’s mother...

...I think that Odysseus was very brave. The examples of his bravery was he outsmarted the cyclops and went to the land of the dead and listened to the sirens; which no one had done and lived. He was brave when he wasn’t scared to go in the cyclops’s cave. He famed bravery that leads him to the cyclops’s cave. Zeus will punish the cyclops if he doesn’t harm his guests and to honor strangers. Thus, in homer’s stories a god reflect a hero’s best of worst qualities. Odysseus is the cleverest of the Greek heroes because he is guided by the goddess of wisdom, Athena. Odysseus had bravery when he has his destiny. He swore to sacrifice a black lamb, handsomest of all our flock. The god who works against...
