...country (Oxford English Dictionary, 2006) .France is made up of both the central “hexagon” and thirteen overseas territories ,departments and collectives ( commonly known as DOM TOM’s). In this essay, I will show that the large geographical scope of France, its multi-cultural population and strong emerging youth-culture make it one of the most linguistically diverse countries in Europe. I will approach the discussion from the outside in, firstly focusing on the languages of the DOM TOM’s, then moving to mainland France and discussing the non-territorial languages. I will then move onto the regional languages of the metropole, their endangered language status and the extent of governments attempt to preserve them. I will focus primarily on the Breton language in this discussion. Finally, I will briefly mention the language of youth and how its deviation from standard French can be viewed as language diversity, all the while commenting on the gradual regression of speakers of minority languages and asking is the idea of France as one of the most linguistically diverse countries in Europe in jeopardy? Despite the numerous living languages In France, the country is officially classed as a monolingual state: French being the only official language .This is stated in act II of the country’s constitution “La langue de la République est Le Français” (Constitution, 1958). Following a campaign to have regional languages recognised in Frances constitution the government amended the constitution...

...The Dali Museum was reviewed on September 27, 2014. The reviewer attended the museum with his father. The museum is located in St. Petersburg, Florida. It is solely dedicated to Salvador Dali. Only Europe has a museum with a larger collection of Dali’s art. The Dali Museum is located on the waterfront of St. Petersburg, Florida. It is near the Albert Whitted Airport, which can be seen from the museum. Right at the entrance there is the “fountain of youth” and the living wall. On the opening floor there is a store, café, classroom, theatre, Raymond James Room, and a door that leads to a garden. In the store there is the “Rainy Rolls” which pays homage to Salvador Dali’s Rainy Taxi. The theatre is where they show a biography of Dali’s life. The Avant-Garden has a couple of interesting things in it. There is a giant representation of the golden rectangle, a stone from Cadaqués, Spain, the Dali wish tree, and a labyrinth to navigate. After heading up the helical staircase to the third floor there are three areas to visit. The first being the bay vista, it is an overlook which provides a spectacular view of the water. The second area is the Tom & Mary James Family Wing which has six different galleries to view. The six galleries are the entry gallery, early works, anti-art, surrealism, contemplation area, and classical and nuclear mystic period. The third area is the Hough Family Wing. This wing is where the visiting exhibitions are located. The Hough Family Wing is also where the...

...spiritual values in the followers mind. Dada was a protest against what they felt was the root cause of war. Dada was an “anti-art” according to Hans Richter, one of the founders of this movement. Dada was used to offend people; it ignored aesthetics and was generally preposterous in form. Many of the art displays were made of different mediums such as urinals, garbage, bus tickets, even snow shovels. One of the more known pieces from the Dadaism period is from Marcel Duchamp “Fountain” in 1917 it was simply a urinal. This shows us that with Dadaism they were able to create art even from objects that would normally not be considered art. Surrealism as an art movement officially started in 1924. In 1924 The Surrealist Manifesto written by Andre Breton was published. Many of the artistic pieces of this era are dream like. Some type of art to wonder and marvel at, not an art of reason. ("Dada," n.d.) Surrealism is thought to have been formed as a reaction to Dadaism art movement, which was a protest of the carnages of World War 1. Surrealism was more focused on the positive outcomes of change happening in the world at that time. The common themes that can be seen in many of the paintings are the dreamy imagery that has an exaggerated analysis of reality. This is thought to produce a more truthful interpretation of what the mind may have experienced through dream. Salvador Dali used a technique which was coined ‘critical paranoia’ ("Dada," n.d.) The technique is very visible in...

...scholars. However, there was a shift from the scholasticism of earlier mediaeval times to largely focusing on the humanities. There was also an emphasis on realism, attempting to remain as objective as possible when interpreting various works; drawing from studies in form, line, lighting, and the human figure based in Greek and Roman times. Eventually, in the last couple centuries of the period, the influences had spread across Europe partially due to the invention of the printing press. Several examples of Renaissance era artists are Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Hieronymus Bosch.Surrealism is an art movement that officially started in 1924 with the publication of Le Manifeste du Surréalisme (The Surrealist Manifesto), written by André Breton. Surrealism is believed to have been formed as a reaction to the earlier Dadaism art movement, which aimed to be an anti-art protest of the horrors brought about from World War I. Focusing on the more positive side of that protest/revolutionary process, the surrealists sought to convey the thought process itself through their art, frequently using juxtaposition and dream imagery to produce colorful and exaggerated interpretations of reality. A major influence in this realm was the dream analysis of Sigmund Freud, earlier in the century, where the unconscious mind produces a more truthful interpretation of what the conscious mind experiences. A few examples of...

...Rachel Mendelson Final EssayArt Appreciation Fall 2012 Art Movement -Surrealism “Although the dream is a very strange phenomenon and an inexplicable mystery, far more inexplicable is the mystery and aspect of our minds confer on certain objects and aspects of life.” g. de Chirico Surrealism is a style of art in which the artist use the element of surprise and unexpected juxtapositions to evoke the imagination and mystery of the subconscious mind. Its intent was to create a liberated mind by the portrayal of everyday reality in an imaginative, dream-like manner. The surrealism art movement is one that included Freudian theories of the unconscious mind, and defy the standards society dictates through questioning what we know as logic, and exploring the fantasies of our imaginations. The surrealist movement, beginning in the 1920's, was based largely on the Dada movement preceding it and which produced works of art that deliberately defied reason. Surrealism developed primarily from the activities during World War I with the most important center of the movement beingParis. From the 1920s onward, the movement spread around the globe, eventually affecting the visual arts, literature, film, and music of many countries and languages, as well as political thought and practice, philosophy, and social theory. Surrealists feasted on the unconscious. They believed that Freud's theories on dreams, ego, superego and the id opened doors to the authentic self and a...

...The Giant Triplet for Dr. King and Ewuare X Osayande is a collage by artist Theodore A. Harris in 2008. In his artwork he uses mixed media, I’m assuming its magazine cut outs and oil paint. In my opinion the subject of this artwork is the upside down Capitol Building located in the center of the three panels. This artwork is collage that is spread across three panels with a background that moves you across the piece. Harris also makes the panels move by making the left and right panels focal point at the bottom and the center panel on the top half of the piece. I believe his painting expresses how capitalism and war suppress people. In this work of art the background of the three panels is what ties them together by fading from a black on the left to a red-orange gradient on the right. In the left panel, the Lincoln Memorial is taking up the bottom half of the panel. In the top center above the Lincoln Memorial is a pair of chained feet. The focal point in this panel is Abe Lincoln, due to his size and his coloring. In the center panel the Capitol Building is placed upside down in the dead center of the artwork. Above the Capitol Building there are fighter jets dropping bombs onto dead soldiers legs with a automatic weapon on top of them that are located below it. To the left of the fighter jets is a spanish article clipping. The focal point in the center panel is in my opinion the focal point of the entire piece which is the upside down capital building in the direct center....

...My theme is surrealism, but none of my artworks are really directly related. I looked into mixing surrealism with expressionism because I like both styles, but they don’t really mix so I went with surrealism. After long deliberation I finally decided on surrealism, once I did it was hard to find works that were not only visually striking to me, but also correlated. So I choose these works mostly based on my liking of them. My chosen works and artists are Salvador Dali Woman with a Head of Roses, Jacek Yerka Flying Town, and Roy Nachum Unknown. When looking at Jacek Yerka’s Flying Town my immediate thought is Howl’s moving castle. Obviously, this is an entire town not just a castle, but the resemblance is uncanny. The most visually striking part of the painting is that the town goes from nice and bright to dark and decaying. The only real subject in this work is the town as the rest of the painting is just landscape. The town portrays movement as it looks as though it’s being pulled upward and being ripped apart from the back forward. In a similar fashion, the most obvious line of the painting is also the town and how it’s angled upward. In the bottom of the painting you can kind of see lines of what looks like the town’s main road when you enter. However, this bit about the painting looks rather off because if you were to sit the town down it would go on top of trees and a river which shouldn’t be there if a town were truly there, but this is a surrealist painting, not a realistic...

...Firstly, Brittany, a part of Europe where Henry spent a large part of his life, was under attack by the French and faced losing their independence, following an invasion in 1487. Henry felt as though he had a duty and sense of obligation to the Britons, and therefore summoned Parliament to grant him extraordinary revenue in order to raise an army sufficient enough to battle against the French. Crushing the potential French control of Brittany was very important to Henry, as by doing so would decrease the possibility of France invading England. This soon became one of Henry's main foreign policy objective, to defend Brittany and potentially, England. Additionally, England and Brittany signed the Treaty of Redon in 1489, in which, Duchess Anne would pay for a small English army to defend Brittany. Henry strived to strengthen is position by forming an alliance with Maximilian. Maximilian had contracted a marriage-by-proxy with Anne, and had no desire fro the Duchy of Brittany to fall into the French hands. The army went to Brittany to support their freedom, but Anne had lost her motive, and reluctantly married Charles VIII. To make things worse for Henry, Perkin Warbeck was simultaneously trying to gain support from the French. Henry launched a late invasion on France in 1492, in which, the French reacted immediately by trying to sought a peace settlement. The Treaty of Etaples were signed in November 1492, in which Charles VIII agreed to withdraw his support for Perkin Warbeck,...

...Nova Scotia Power / Emera, Point Tupper, Nova Scotia Canada In 2004, B.I.D. was approached by Nova Scotia Power (NSP), to offer a project estimate for their new marine coal terminal. Since NSP's primary source of fuel (Cape Breton Coal Mine) was closed as of 2001, there was a need to diversify their fuel supply. The answer to this nagging business problem was to construct a new receiving terminal at the Point Tupper, Nova Scotia site, to import coal from various parts in the world, for their power generation. Our part was to design, manufacture, and install the custom system for their coal receiving, handling, and stock piling of imported coal. Since B.I.D. had supplied equipment for their similar project in Sydney, Nova Scotia, we were more than ready to deliver. However, prior to our part in this project came the site work- which consisted of rail work, rail modifications and environmental studies. The main contractor for this work, CBCL, was also a repeat client of ours. Both companies were confident in B.I.D.'s reputation to solve a problem. Environmental, economical, location and port considerations accounted for several revision requests to the system- no problem for B.I.D. The complete material handling system was built to receive coal and petroleum coke from self-unloading ships and from an E-crane unloading bulker ships- which were to then transport the product on shore to two storage piles at a continuous rate up to 3000 TPH using 54" wide belts...

...is not what we say, but it is how we say it. A quality education and career training are sound investments for a bright future, an illustrious career, and a successful life. Individuals who complete more years of education have greater access to higher paying jobs-such as management, professional, and related occupations than those with fewer years of education. “Where one goes to college can have effects on one's future education, occupation, and income” (Karen, 2002, p. 193). Self-discipline, sacrifice, patience, perseverance, and positive attitude should be sufficient motivating factors, and a reminder that a good education pays off eventually by reaping the fruits of hard work. Physical well-being, personal wellness, and good health are part of personal responsibility. “Participation in physical activity should remain a high priority to facilitate maintenance of healthy body weights” (Liebman, 2005, p. 95). Personal drive, ambition, and desire to succeed are necessary attributes that help in overcoming any obstacles. Volunteering, part of personal responsibility requires time, and flexibility to help less fortunate members of the community, and may work in homeless shelters, children’s, and nursing homes, hospitals, churches, correctional institutions, and schools. Learning from our past can help avoid repetition of mistakes in the future. Responsibility means doing the right thing and not blaming others for our actions. ...mostly define a child’s acceptance and good relationship with things within the environment. Good socialization skills are developed when humans are exposed to as many things as possible. The more events that a child encounters and has positive reactions to, the better response he/she will have when these events are repeated throughout the course of life. It is important that you make the socialization process as entertaining and rewarding as you possibly can. This means that during this process, your infant will need to accept being handled and being touched by other humans so that she will not fear strangers (healthcare providers, or people whom they are introduced to.) This will prove beneficial when you have to take the infant to the health clinic per se. Make sure that all the experiences a child is introduced to are pleasurable experiences. That way the child will build a good association between the event and the reward. ...The weight loss industry is making millions every year on Americans. So why are so many Americans continuing to gain weight at increasing numbers? Could it be diets and weight loss supplements are detrimental to the overall health of so many Americans? The unhealthy reliance on appetite suppressants and the restrictions of certain food groups generally don’t work in the long term and can even be dangerous. The low cost of diets and the promise of fast results can certainly encourage many Americans to diet. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention more than 20 million Americans use dietary supplements, including multivitamins, minerals and herbs. The rise of diet supplements from 42% in 2006 to 62% in 2010 has only fueled the growth of dietary supplements and diet plans to a multimillion dollar industry (Center for Disease Control, 2011). The weight loss industry encourages individuals to improve their overall health by dieting. The industry approach suggest people can eat poorly and just take a diet supplement and have the same results of someone who eats well, exercise and takes care of their health by getting regular checkups. This is farthest from the truth according to a CNN report. Dr. Roberta Anding, a registered dietitian and director of sports nutrition at Texas Children Hospital, stated “while some supplements can be helpful in losing weight they are not match to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. “ Studies haven’t shown any significant difference...
