In the story “Ender’s Game” by Orson Scott Card the setting takes place on Earth which has been devastated by two intergalactic wars between the humans and the Formics with Earth’s citizen’s afraid there will be another war. The main character, Ender, grows up in a post war era learning about the defeat of the Formics after the first invasion and the second invasion which was considered a miracle. He idolizes Mazer Rackham on how he defeated the Formics in the second war. He has seen the videos of Mazer Rackham defeating the Formics multiple times. After the 1st Formic Invasion the Formics got the nickname of buggers because of their exoskeleton appearance and similarities between the Formics and bugs. He manages to get the drop on one and accidentally kills him becoming what he does not want to be. Ender is a third which is a third child. Being a third in that day and age is an insult to the family. The government is dealing with overpopulation and only allows two children, but if the other two are promising for the government they allow the parents to have another child, which hopefully does well in school and gets drafted into the war to protect from the next invasion of Formics. Peter was rejected from the program for being too willing to shed blood. Valentine, Ender’s sister, was also rejected from the program because she was too kind. The government was hoping that Ender would be the perfect mix of ruthlessness and kindness in order to defeat the Formics. Ender is sent off to battle school where he devotes his time to learn about the major Formic invasions in hopes to gain some intel to defeat them. Since he has lived in a post war earth he has learned buggers are bad and all they want is war. Colonel Grant manipulates him easily into committing xenocide on the buggers wiping them out because they were afraid the humans were afraid would be another war.
