...for a few weeks, missionaries were already heading back east to go on missions (The Trek). After the two handcart tragedies of 1856, 70 missionaries were sent back to help anyone else that wanted to make the journey west, and they made it back in only 48 days (The Trek). They were trying to make sure that everyone who wanted a chance to come west had that opportunity. Brigham Young played a huge role in helping all the pioneers come west. He is one of the most important western colonizers (History). He helped begin about 350 settlements (History). He was also helpful in developing states, such as Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Arizona, California, and Nevada (History). The members wanted to have communication between all of the settlements. Brigham...

...Timothy Graham African American History African American relations with the early Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day saints. In 1842, Joseph Smith, founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, was asked by the editor of the Chicago Democrat, Joseph Wentworth, to summarize the basic principles of the newly founded religion. Included in the response, Smith presented thirteen declarations which have collectively become to be knows as the “Articles of Faith”. The thirteenth of these articles states the following: “We believe in being hones, true, chaste, benevolent, and in doing good to all men. Indeed we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.[i] It regard to the treatment of Americans of African descent, it is no secret that the nation, at large, treated individuals with great contempt. The question is whether or not this new faith group was any different. How did treatment of African Americans among the Saints differ from that of the general population of the United States during the period from 1830, the church’s founding, to the end of the century? What was the LDS church’s position on slavery and did practice follow policy among members of a church founded on the principles of “faith, hope, and charity”?[ii] And...

...Who contributed more to the Mormon movement? Joseph Smith or Brigham Young? Firstly what is a Mormon? A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a religion founded in the US in 1830 by Joseph Smith. Then Brigham Young was the new leader of the Mormons once Joseph Smith died. In this essay I am going to investigate who contributed more to the Mormon movement. Was it Joseph Smith or Brigham Young? Joseph Smith was an American religious leader and founder of Mormonism. He was faithful, driven, and a strong speaker, but was easily tempered. When Joseph Smith was 14 he prayed behind his father’s house for guidance. According to Smith, a pillar of light appeared before him. In 1827 he was visited by an angel who told him where the book was to be found and Smith claimed he dug it up on a hillside near Manchester, New York. The book gave a different story from the Bible. According to the book, lost Israeli tribes migrated to America before the birth of Christ. There they fought each other until Christ was born and established his Church. Later, the fighting started again. One of the few survivours was a man called Mormon who spent the rest of his life recording the story of his people on the plates. Smith claimed that no one else was allowed to see the plates. When he was twenty-four, Smith published the Book of Mormon; by the time of his death fourteen years later, he had attracted tens of thousands of followers and founded a religion and religious culture...

...with finances so that Smith could focus on translating the golden plates and would not have worry about working to provide for his family. Smith was then able to publish the first portion of the Book of Mormon in Spring of 1830. He then took a break before finishing and once completed it was over 600 pages. Once the book was completed, can the task of spread the word to others. A small group including those who sponsored Smith, two of his brothers, and members from the Whitmer family were the first prophets. They were forced to move from state to state because of the extreme amounts of hostility that they faced. It was a few years after they move to Illinois that Smith and his brother Hyrum were arrested and murdered in 1844. After this Brigham Young became the next president of the church. Mormon continued to receive hostility in Illinois so Young lead them to Utah, where many Mormons ended up settling permanently. Despite more persecution, Young sent people out to spread Mormonism to those in other countries and continents. After Young came Taylor, who continued to watch his people suffer mainly for their belief in polygamy. However, next came Wilford Woodruff who convinced the church to abandon this practice in order to conform to the law of the United States. Many Mormons were not happy with this declaration, so they broke off into their own little subgroups in order to continue polygamy. Now there are many different sector of Mormonism with one of the largest and most popular...

...similar with the same resources. Each comes with unique characteristics and conditions. She starts off by explaining how organizing settlements in the Northern hemisphere was very different than in the Southern hemisphere. The only model the British had to follow for colonizing was South America. In the North there was no gold or silver to mine for profit nor a large number of natives to enslave. Because of these lacking traits it was difficult to find people who would finance the trip to colonize Jamestown. This brings up the most important factor when looking at colonization: money. Another one of the historians, Dean May, writes from a Mormon angle about a similar experience of colonization by the Mormons. He describes how Brigham Young, the Mormon leader, was faced with a hard decision when he was asked by President Polk, the United States President, to enlist a multitude of Mormon men to help fight the war...

...“International melting pot,” inhabited by a number of culturally diverse people. Each and every distinct group has played their part in the development of nation whether ‘twas good or bad. I believe that the members of “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints,” (otherwise known as Mormons) have proved to be crucial to the growth of the U.S.A. in every aspect. After the establishment of religion in 1827, Mormons have been the target of persecution and discrimination by many. The bulk of this persecution occurred in 1836 when a group of rebel militia attacked Mormon headquarters located in Northern Missouri. This ambush against the Mormons sparked an onslaught of hate crimes to come. After being exiled from Missouri and Illinois, Brigham Young led an intrepid party of immigrants into the Great Salt Lake valley in 1847. The population grew rapidly, and by 1849, the Mormons had managed to form a civil government with Young at the helm. This brief summary has set the stage for this report, where I will evaluate Mormons of the 1830’s and 40’s and enlighten you on their beliefs, culture, and impact throughout American History. Establishment of Religion The establishment of the LDS church is a very interesting story that many people do not understand. “In the spring of 1820, a 14-year-old boy named Joseph Smith went into a grove of trees near his home in Palmyra, New York, and prayed to learn which church he should join. In answer to his prayer, God the Father and His...

...The Differences in Mormon Religion Daniela Delgadillo Com/170 November 04, 2013 Rakel Sampson The Differences in Mormon Religion Though they both share the Mormon name, Mormons and Fundamentalist Mormons have differences on several points, including views of Joseph Smith, The Priesthood, and Polygamy. Joseph Smith is a prophet of the Mormon Religion that founded The Church of Jesus Christ. The church was founded in Fayette, New York, on April 6, 1830. According to Packham (2011), when Joseph Smith began looking what religion to join he prayed and asked for guidance from God. God, the Father and God, the Son appeared to him in a vision known as “The First Vision”, who told him that all other religions were wrong, and he, Joseph, would create the true church. LDS Mormons respect but not worship Joseph Smith as the prophet and instrument God used to restore the ancient truth and divine gospel (Gordon B. Hinckley, “Joseph Smith Jr.—Prophet of God, Mighty Servant,” Ensign, Dec 2005, 2–6). While FLDS Mormons also see Joseph Smith as the prophet God chose to bring forth the true Church, they worship and praise him and his 19th century doctrines. In conclusion, Joseph Smith is seen as the prophet of God to restore the true church; though LDS Mormons respect him like any other prophet they do not worship him like FLDS Mormons. In Mormon Religion, “The Priesthood is the authority to act in God’s name. The same priesthood authority that existed in the original Church established...

...Mormonism Many people have capricious ideas about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The history of Mormonism reads much like a fairytale. It began in the early nineteenth century, in upstate New York. In the heart of a period plagued by religious tension and conflicting claims, a young man by the name of Joseph Smith Jr. sought to determine his position with God, and which church he should join. Shortly thereafter, Smith’s prayers were answered. Over the next several years, Smith experienced several substantial manifestations, including one from an angel by the name of Moroni, who told Smith as to where he could find the gold plates that would later become the Book of Mormon. Shadowing these events, Smith played a pivotal role in organizing a church that would later become known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Shortly thereafter, devotees moved to an area just shy of Cleveland, Ohio, to a town called Kirtland, and through strong missionary work, the church saw an influx of new members. As the Kirtland community began to grow and prosper a new branch was formed in Missouri. Following the economic collapse of Kirtland in 1837, church adherents moved to join with the splinter group in Missouri, in a place known as Far West in Caldwell County. However, rising religious tensions eventually erupted into conflict, forcing those members of the Mormon Church to move once again. In 1839, the Saints found their selves on the banks of the Mississippi...

...Running head: THE ABILITIES OF AN AMERCAN INVENTOR The Abilities of an American Inventor GEN/200 Alice McBride David Swensen University of Phoenix The Abilities of an American Inventor At first glance it appears as though Philo Farnsworth, at a very young age, developed a natural ability to understand complicated concepts. At 14 years of age, Philo envisioned a way to create the all electronic television. Later, at 21, he was able, with the help of his wife and her brother, to build all the components, and assemble the first television. The time in between these two events seems to point to something other than just technical ability. Philo was able to create and also recognize opportunities. To most people, this may be more important. Most people will probably not invent anything at all, let alone something that has had the impact on our lives that television has, but we can all look back on our lives, and see opportunity that we have missed, or maybe a time we did not put forth the effort we should have. Philo’s ability to seize an opportunity is something we can all learn to achieve (Encyclopedia of World Biography, Thomas Gale, Edition 1, 1998). Philo Farnsworth was born in Indian Creek, near Beaver Utah, on August 19th, 1906. There was no electricity where Philo lived. Philo’s father, Lewis Farnsworth, would often discuss the technical aspects of such devices as the telephone...

...Returning Wrestling to the University Imagine this, you are in the gym waiting for the first practice of the season to start. Your excitement is overwhelming. You have spent your entire life working up to this point; you are a college athlete. You are being paid to attend school and play your favorite sport for it. Your coach walks in with an upset look on his face. You think to yourself that it’s just going to be a difficult practice. Your coach actually tells you that you do not have practice today. You wont have practice ever again. Your entire life work gone, just like that. With your heart crushed, you cannot understand why the sport is just, canceled. You walk up to your coach and ask what the problem is. Your coach, as disappointed as you, tells you that the University board of athletics has decided to drop your “life” from the program to abide by the Title IX requirements and for not being a profitable program. This actually happened here at the University of Utah 50 years ago and it’s because there is a problem going on at Universities like The U and it is that men’s non-revenue sports, like wrestling, are being impacted negatively. Wresting is beginning to fade from colleges that are not in the Big Ten or the Ivy League, and Colleges like the University of Utah are participating in letting the sport diminish. In an article written by Coyte G. Cooper, “Involving the core product” “While there were 363 NCAA wrestling programs in 1981, the number of men’s wrestling...

...19145 Lana Road Nashville, TN 37013 November 1, 2024 Dear Audrey, It’s sad how friends can lose touch with each other throughout the years. We swore nothing would ever tear us apart. Here we are now in 2024 and it’s been eight years since we last spoke. At one time, it seemed like no one could touch our friendship, until we found ourselves entering into adulthood. There were responsibilities, school, and decisions to make about our lives. Unfortunately, that meant we had to go our separate ways. Since we last spoke, I graduated from Eastern Illinois University where I received my master’s degree in Meteorology and a minor in Broadcasting. After graduating from EIU I had an amazing opportunity to study climatology in Australia for a year. When I came back to the States, WSMU in Nashville, Tennessee offered me a job in the Weather department, delivering weather on weekends and early news programs. Being a meteorologist is a challenging and sometime frustrating job that I must admit I love. I analyze data daily to determine what the weather will bring to the lives of thousands of people. No two days are alike in the world of meteorology. I remember a blizzard in January 2022 that the computer models failed to predict. The entire region was at a standstill for days under 14 inches of snow. I heard about that for months. I tucked my tail in and studied the storm, to help me foresee similar weather patterns in the future. ...

...Philo Taylor Farnsworth Was an American inventor in the early 1900’s and considered the father of television for his invention of what is known as the Electric Television. This invention was used in conjunction with Vladimir K. Zworykin’s Cathode Ray Tube which was used in many common electrical appliances up until the past 15 years in which Transistors and Crystal Displays have become the standard for use in electronics. Farnsworth was born August 19, 1906 near what is now known as Beaver, Utah by Mormon couple Lewis Edwin Farnsworth and Serena Amanda Bastian who lived in a log cabin up until a small amount of time after Philo’s Birth. In 1918 Philo and his family moved to Rigby, Idaho. Upon to his family’s relocation to Idaho he was pleased to find out that his new home was wired for electricity by what was known as a Delco generator which allowed for energy for farm equipment and lighting. He quickly self-taught himself and learned personal study in mechanical and electrical technology, he would repair the troublesome delcor generator, and upon finding a burned out electric motor among some items discarded by the previous tenants, proceeding to rewind the armature and convert his mother's hand-powered washing machine into an electric-powered one. Philo developed his early interest in electronics after his first telephone conversation with an out-of-state relative and the discovery of a large cache of technology magazines in the attic of the family’s new home, he won a $25...
