In the online video Brilliant Public Speaking, Newman (2013) stated that “no one cares what you want to say, what they care about is what they want to hear,” that’s a very powerful statement to open this video with, and really hit home with me. In any public speaking event where I have been one of the speakers, I always delivered the message with the intention of delivering what I wanted to say, not what the audience wanted to hear. Five minutes into this video proved that my way of delivering a message, may not have always had the impact on my listeners that I had intended. This video demonstrates some of the best ways to deliver an effective speech, and touches on some key points to not only captivate your audience, but to insure that the message that was intended be delivered , in fact is received by the audience.
All of the subjects that were discussed in the video are key elements in delivering a powerful and effective speech. There is one key point though, that is most significant when trying to captivate your audience, and that is the opening. If you are not able to capture your audience in the first few minutes of your speech, there is a good chance you will never make that connection with them, and your message will be completely lost. If your message is not received, not only is this a waste of your time, but a waste of your audiences’ time as well. If your speech was sales oriented, the lack of a powerful and memorable speech could have a negative impact on your sales. During the opening to any speech, whenever possible, the use of a visual statement may be most effective. The best example in the video was referring to the woman who was an image consultant. She was speaking to them about appearance and what they should wear at work. When she came on stage, she was wearing an outfit that was completely the opposite of what should be worn at

When listening to the different segments of this video, the section that applied to me the most was the section about overcoming nerves. When thinking about speaking sometimes it brings fear. It is important to remember that public speaking is a part of everyday life.
