...Brilliant Public Speaking Paper University of Phoenix BCOM275 Brilliant Speaking The video really addresses many of the facets that have been highlighted in our readings. It addresses that the qualities of a successful speaker of a small group are also the same qualities that are found in a speaker of large crowds. These qualities are needed in the workplace, and can help establish positive communication in the work team. Speaking is our primary method of communication when in person. So the most important part of communication is getting the message across. The video addresses how many people have a terrible fear of public speaking. The video claims that many people fear public speaking over death itself. I have a very hard time believing that, since a person could easily exaggerate their phobia. One of the practices that would be most relevant to my experience and fears would be to remember to make eye contact with the audience, and smile more. I have a terrible time doing this and I know it. Another great point that was given was to check out your surroundings before you give our speech. This will help you feel more comfortable. If I was to give advice to someone speaking, I would tell them that the crowd is only human, and that the people came there to listen. So basically be themselves and relax. The video also makes a point that it helps to turn the nervousness into excitement. While I have not done that personally I would be very interested to find...

...Communication An outstanding communicator is one who distinguishes himself by the way he uses language. He normally makes eye contact while speaking, speaks fluently, concentrates on content of the conversation and thinks before speaking. Ineffective communication is speaking or writing in a way that lost and confuse your audience. Based on physical contact and observation on the television, our Prime Minister is an excellent example of a good communicator. On the other hand, someone I know to be an ineffective communicator is a news reporter. The Hon. Dean Barrow has good rhetoric. Numerous instances he has been confronted by the media and organizations unexpectedly and he always respond in a very clear and concise manner. Rarely would you find him stumbling over his words and he speaks fluently. On a visit to the Prime Minister I was given the opportunity to ask him questions and I can see that he thinks before he speaks, he speaks slowly yet answers quickly in simple language. The Prime Minister often uses concoction of jargonistic words arranged into convoluted sentences as an effective way of covering up ideas or answers to questions that are half-baked, obvious, or trivial which I believ is part of his communication strategy. He knows how to keep his audience attention. Reporters often tend to be directly, impromptu and most often does not exhibit characters and behaviors that make him or her to be believed and trusted by people. Our reporters in Belize tend to be too...

...transcend the discouragement they have experience. One of those people is Dr. Nancy Compean-Garcia, my beloved and brilliant aunt, or “Tia”. A professor in English as a Second Language education, an author, and an advocate for Latina women, my aunt has opened new doors for women around the San Antonio area, providing opportunities and encouragement for them to never give up on themselves, and never underestimate their power. My aunt came form humble beginnings in the Rio Grande Valley, in the neighborhoods of a city named Brownsville. She was raised a Spanish speaker, which made it hard for her to fit in at school. “Unfortunately, I was discouraged when at a very young age, first grade to be exact, I was retained due to the language barrier,” she writes. “Although I could read and write in Spanish, I was not proficient in English.” Her struggle through this roadblock in her education proved to be powerful, as her mother was very supportive and promoted bilingualism. “She knew that eventually my bilingualism would propel me to higher heights. She never stopped teaching me Spanish, she was very proud of our heritage and culture as any educated Latina in the Valley. Mrs. Benilde Olvera, my third grade teacher, instilled in me perseverance, kindness, and excellence in school. ” Dr. Garcia never gave up her drive to learn English, and once she did, she felt that her Spanish-speaking ability was no longer a setback, but a great advantage. But, this cannot be said for every Latina woman, as...

...In the play The Crucible , John Proctor is the tragic hero of the play because his sin has refrained him from, speaking upon against what is wrong, when he does speak up it is too late, then finally his pride is so strong that it leads to his downfall, and his dedication to his family makes him decide to do the wrong thing. Proctor has many flaws, but even with them he is truly a good person, he showed nonconformity by not doing something he doesn't believe in, An example is when Hale asked him why he wasn't going to church he said,”I think, sometimes, the man dreams cathedrals, not clapboard meetin' houses.”(Act2 pg.65). This implying that he feels that Parris cares more about wealth and reputation he gains from it rather than Christian morals.Proctor also doesn't support that Parris views himself as a nobleman, who doesn't need to conform to Parris warped view of Christianity and Puritan belief. He also portrays brilliant characteristics for his children to look up to because he put up a fight for his family until his last breath. John Proctor’s dedication and trust in people make him a tragic hero because if John didn’t truly believe that Abigail would spare him and his family he probably would have stayed quiet.Proctor believes at the...

...Rachel Ruggeri ENG 474 Dr. Ernest Smith 9/7/14 The Zero “It’s a satirical novel whose rules are its own.” (HarperCollins(2007, July 17).Q&A With THE ZERO’s Jess Walter, https://www.booktheives.blogspot.com) As a satire based on the tragic events of September 11, 2001, The Zero “broke” many literary rules, but Jess Walter decided he would present that time in our history as he saw fit. I gained quite a bit of insight into Jess Walter’s inspiration for The Zero through the interviews. The unusual protagonist we see as our “hero” in the book is based largely on Walter’s viewpoints to the way we, as a culture, reacted to the attacks. Using a key theme in postmodern works, fragmentation. Walter states that “Transitions suck. Transitions are almost always forced or if they’re not, then they take you-they transition-to a place you don’t want to go.” “Fragmentation kept it so fresh for me, because I was never sure how much I was going to reveal (Ehrnwald,Ligan,Lynaugh,Vesta(2010, February 20 & March 16). A Conversation with Jess Walter, https://willowsprings.ewu.edu/interviews/walter.pdf) Walter creates time gaps in Remy’s memory. Remy, alongside the reader, is bounced from situation to situation, never quite sure of what he had done to lead him there. All of his negative memories have seemed to vanish, including the majority of that tragic day. In the HarperCollins article (https://www.booktheives.blogspot.com), Walter discusses how these gaps in memory relate to the...

...The Chinese Cultural Revolution "A revolution is not a dinner party or writing an essay or painting a picture or doing embroidery; it cannot be so refined, so leisurely and gentle, so temperate, kind, courteous, restrained and magnanimous"- Mao said in 1927 to a youth activist The reason for china to trying to become such a new generation was solely the opinion of Mao and his followers. Mao had seen the way the Russian revolution had gone astray and worried China would follow in its path. He mad four goals: to rectify China's communists, replace his successors with one more faithful, provide youth's with a revolutionary experience and achieve policy changes to make education, health care and cultural systems less elitist. Obviously, the goals were purely a show when his real concern was his place in history. When he launched the revolution schools were shut down and officials were publicly humiliated to test them. Elders and intellectuals were physically and verbally abused. Many died of ignorant causes, without a second thought from Mao. So as the revolution tolled on Mao truly only had himself in mind. Mao went through great lengths to make sure that everyone was Maoist. He had Lin Bao his defense minister make his whole army maoist. He shut down schools in August 1966 Mao encouraged his red army to attack all traditional values and the bourgeois. He even publicly criticized officials to see how they would react....

...Group Interaction Strategies One of the most important elements of success of an organization is communication. Communication allows people from every part of the globe to come together and work toward a common goal. Communication is essential to an organizations success and because of this, it is important to have various communication methods. People will respond to communication methods differently, what works on one person will not necessarily work on another. Management must have an understanding of the people within the organization, without this knowledge, the ability to communicate effectively will be hampered. Some of the things that must be taken into consideration concerning communication include different age groups, ethnicities, gender differences, non-native English speakers, people with disabilities and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) specifics, and expatriates. Management that has a working knowledge of how to communicate with these different groups will have a decided advantage. Different Age Groups Communication styles have changed through the generations. In years past, it was common for people to visit each other at their homes or to call on the telephone; later generations e-mailed one another, and still later generations text message or Facebook one another to keep in touch. If management knows what age groups are working within its organization helps to determine what type of communication strategies to use. For instance, instead of having...

...others. From taping paper tortoises to our friends’ backs to soaking the most disagreeable teacher using water guns from an upstairs window, my friends and I tried all those seemingly interesting things to enjoy our carefree childhood. Nowadays, when retrospecting those bad little tricks, we would just laugh and joke. It seems that no one really cares about what children do and all those wrong doings should be forgiven. But still there is one thing that we regret till these days. It started from an April spring noon. Still in a daze after the long nap, I shuffled in the hallway and directly bumped into a man around the corner. I looked up to find who he was and immediately recognized him as the water bearer of our school. This unamiable middle-aged man lived in our school’s small warehouse with his wife and two sons. Looking hairy and unkempt, he always had a gloomy air around him. His eyes were glazed, deep set, frightening. His rough poker face made me instantly not sleepy at all and I awkwardly said:”Sorry. I just...” Not surprisingly, he spoke nothing, just cast a glance at me and then left. And it was at that moment that something evil occurred to me--I wanted to fool him. It must be fun. I kept walking, thinking about my plan and caught a glimpse of the warehouse which he lived. It was next to the stairs of our teaching building with a high, rusty iron gate. “It must be annoying if we knock that door heavily, isn’t it?”I murmured. What a “brilliant” idea! Excitedly...

...How Schools Kill Creativity Eric Godinez PHL/458 27 October 2014 Cyndi Bills How Schools Kill Creativity For this paper I chose talk “How Schools Kill Creativity” by Sir Ken Robinson. The talk takes place in Monterey, CA February22-25, 2006 and the conference was named “The Future We Will Create”. And rightly so with many of the speakers being futurists and many of the talks held emphasized future developments in various fields. Sir Ken Robinson is a British author, speaker, and international advisor on education in the arts. I had seen this talk on TED a few years ago and it really struck a chord with me. I had not seen it I quite some time and so when I saw it again it had the same effect on me as the first time I saw it. I found the talk to be not only enlightening but funny and upbeat. Sir Ken Robinson has excellent public speaking skills and a fantastic wit. During his talk he brings up several points about education and the current system. The Importance of Creativity To begin his talk Sir Ken Robinson states that children have a great capacity for innovation. I can certainly relate to this being a father of two girls and stepson. They all have their unique gifts and talents. My stepson is whiz when it comes to math he is only nine years old, my twelve year old daughter love to play cello, and my five year old daughter loves to sing and dance. I once was waiting in a very long line and she started to sing a song I had never heard before. It appeared...

...RESEARCH & IDEAS Applying Business Theories to Your Life Published: June 4, 2012 Author: Carmen Nobel Scholarly economic theory applies to more than just business. The same causal mechanisms that drive big corporations to success can be just as effective in driving our personal lives, says Professor Clayton M. Christensen. Key concepts include: • In evaluating major life decisions, it's helpful to employ a tool called discovery-driven planning, which essentially boils down to a single question: What assumptions must prove true for this plan to work? • Incentives are not the same things as motivators. • Marginal thinking can be dangerous. It's safer to decide early on that you'll stay true to your commitments 100 percent the time, rather than assess the risk of every "just this once" possibility that comes along. Intel Corp. and the Pentagon, for example. In 2011, Thinkers50 named him the world's most influential business thinker. At the same time, he has held major leadership positions in his church, and he's never taken a business meeting on a Sunday because his faith encourages its members to keep the Sabbath Day holy. He sees no dichotomy. "You know, it's a travesty that somehow our society has gotten to a point where people have the view that science and academia are inconsistent with a spiritual life, and the belief that there we've been put here for a purpose," he says. "The reality is that the only reason you're interested in either of these things is that you're interested...
