...News of a Nation In the modern age of technology, the individual is able to receive news of around the nation or the world from various sources. Since stations; such as NBC, ABC, CBS, and FOX, are distinct broadcast stations, some may have different techniques of presenting their stories. Some broadcast stations, such as NBC, use the words “pierce” and “wail of sirens” to set the tone of the story to evoke emotions from viewers at home. Broadcast stations, like CBS, use visuals and interviews to give a clearer understanding of what happened and how it happened. However, some stations, like FOX tend to give viewers a goofy and simply non-serious report on events and incidents that occur in the nation. Then there are stations, like ABC, who simply deliver the news clearly and directly to viewers at home. News stations around the nation have different methods of delivering their news, although some of them are less beneficial than others. During NBC’s Nightly News, with Brian Williams, the Pentagon correspondant, Jim Miklaszewski, emphasizes the implications the Navy yard shooting had in the four mile radius of the incident. He states, “... nearby schools were locked down, highways shut down, the Capital closed and the Nationals game postponed.” The emphasis of these implications the shooting had on the public shows the intense and immediate fear that struck throughout Washington D.C. The emphasis constantly hits the reader with the consequences of the shooting and it allows...

...surprising. It’s not even as attractive as it was. Somehow the shine has dulled through years of radio commercials, imaging voice and a myriad of other radio stuff. It’s however not un-common to come across the excitement of a listener who has heard their voice for the first time on radio. Birthday calls, discussion call ins, music requests, salaams and incident reports are just some of the ways in which radio fans dreams of being on air have come alive. Rarely do they get an opportunity to control what goes on air though. Imagine you are the listener and imagine it was possible for you to control what music is played and not just that. Even further, imagine that you could also say a few words concerning anything under the sun and all that is broadcast for everyone to hear. This is beyond radio as it is widely understood now. In fact, very few programming directors would let go the reigns on their station content in exchange for complete lack of control. However, this is not a mirage any more. It’s now possible with crowdsourced radio. The Oxford dictionary defines crowdsourcing as obtaining (information or input into a particular task or project) by enlisting the services of a number of people, either paid or unpaid, typically via the Internet. Crowdsourcing is not an entirely new concept in Kenya. Ardent ICT enthusiasts will find Ushahidi a not too strange name....

...In this paper, the authors investigate how price promotions influence the post purchase consumption experience of hedonic products over time. Depending on whether there is an immediate consumption or a delay in consumption after receiving a discount, a price discount may either increase consumer enjoyment by enhancing positive moods while dampening the “pain” of payment or decrease consumer enjoyment by lowering attention during consumption. Four experiments were conducted to test if immediate or delays in consumption after receiving a discount would play significant role in determining this increase or decrease in consumer enjoyment. These experiments involved real spending and consumption and set out to demonstrate that when consumption occurred immediately after a price discount, consumption experience was more enjoyable and there was an opposite effect on consumption experience when consumption was delayed. The experiments further investigated feelings (mood) and attention respectively to support these effects while ruling out perceived quality, absolute paid price and direct sunk cost as possible explanations. In experiment 1, they tested the influence of price promotions and a delay in consumption on overall consumer enjoyment (Hypothesis 1) of chocolate truffles. Hypothesis 1a stated an increase in consumer enjoyment between price promotion and immediate consumption while Hypothesis 1b stated a decrease in consumer enjoyment between a price promotion and a delay in...

...I have chosen to evaluate a review of the new sitcom ‘Modern Family’. It is established that genres act as shortcuts and are ideological in nature. They serve to organise particular programs by providing artists with an understanding of its rules and conventions, audiences with an interpretative context, and institutions with a means to facilitate the sale of a particular media text to an audience. However, particular genres continually develop in an attempt to invent fresh concepts. Michael Idato’s review of ‘Modern Family’ highlights to a degree the traditional conventions of a sitcom, and examines how this program alters such a traditional framework in order to establish itself as unique. He also highlights the specific techniques used by the program to both capture and maintain an audience which involves a consideration of both program content and celebrity. Michael Idato highlights that ‘Modern Family’ consists of all the elements typical of a sitcom whose comic premise and structure revolves around a dysfunctional family. He recognises that its program content is derived ‘straight from the comedy playbook’ (Idato, 2010) as it explores the challenges of parenting, marriage and teenage romance which are so frequently touched upon. The diversity of the characters portrayed in ‘Modern Family’ inevitably allows for its interpretation as a traditional ‘character com’ (Aaronson, 2000, p.13). Its form therefore allows for the creation of opposing comic perspectives within particular...

...1. Using examples, explain the difference between obscene and indecent materials. Obscene and indecent both have different meanings but are similar in many ways. Obscene material is described as disgusting or repulsive but indecent material is described as being offensive to the public. Both obscene and indecent can be view differently by the public; however, the Constitution plays a role with indecent material. Obscene material "is not protected by the First Amendment,” (The Dynamics of Mass Communication Tenth Edition, page 377) and broadcast stations cannot air obscene material at anytime. The problem with this is that no one had come up with a set standard of what obscene material is. Due to the difference in beliefs between families and individuals, no two people have the same beliefs and will not agree to a set standard of what obscene material really is. Since obscene material is can not be banned completely and therefore can be view during nighttime broadcasting. A good example of this is the adult swim channel. During the day children can view cartoons like Spongebob and Rugrats; but when 10 o’clock p.m. hit, the channel switches to adult swim when there are show with naked women and sex scenes. According to the U.S. Supreme Court, to be obscene, material must meet a three-prong test, "(1) an average person, applying contemporary community standards, must find that the material, as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest (i.e., material having a tendency to excite...

...news about Mayor Rob Ford’s scandal on consuming narcotics approximately a year ago has gotten a lot of attention. When this story is portrayed on local news stations, for an example on City Pulse 24, Rob Ford is “celebritized”—made into a popular figure in society—, on the other hand, on national and global news stations, he is made to look like a criminal. Upon analyzing both local and global news, the ratio of serious news to entertainment news of popular news stories, will be exposed; ultimately, looking at news in a more systematic way displays that news media is presented to entertain and inform the public. “Serious” local news media is often portrayed to the public as entertainment news. When watching most local and national new broadcasts, you will see a series of news stories varying from current political events, to coverage of a celebrity who just had a baby. The media is able to frame stories in a way where shock value and the ability to entertain becomes the forefront of the news. In this booming technological era, people have the ability to stay connected to current news via the Internet and several news broadcasting stations. Mobile applications developed by the news stations to provide easy and effective news broadcasting. Internet streaming is also a new form of technology for news stations. These new developments make the liaison between the people and their community convenient,...

...A product or practice, which I think is restricting our freedom, is the Broadcast Act that forces people who have a television to pay fees for NHK. This is because NHK does not get money from sponsors as private TV stations do and NHK has relied on their viewer and listener for funds. Under this law, people who own a television or who can watch one-segment broadcasting must pay fees for NHK, even if they never watch NHK. I strongly believe that this law might break the freedom of choice. What I mean is that we can choose which TV program to watch, and therefore we can decide not to watch NHK. However, once we own a television, we are forced to pay money for NHK. Also, I would like to discuss this issue from a different point of view. It is said that NHK get money from its viewers and listeners, and use the money to pay salaries for employees and to make TV programs. However, salaries that they get are considerably high, compared with average annual salary of Japanese workers. In addition, some programs on NHK are based on incorrect historical background such as territorial issue and perspective on wars. NHK’s perspectives on Japanese history are different from what Japanese government announces. In these points, the attitude of NHK is disputable and NHK should not get money from its viewers unless NHK changes its attitude. Therefore, I highly recommend a new law that viewers and listeners pay fees for NHK only when they watch NHK. In this law, viewers can choose whether...

...continuously became more aware of how dominant the media in the world is. When I began my A level in media studies I became to recognise how powerful the media in the world is and how it is frequently done by broadcast journalists. I’ve always loved the feeling of personal achievement and having pride in what I do, I’m aware that broadcast journalism would bring me high level of satisfaction and achievement. Also, I consider myself as wanderlust, the opportunity to international travel reporting significant events would be an overwhelming experience. Furthermore, I believe the essence of broadcast journalism is people and their stories, the chance to meet different people from different cultures and paths of life would give me personally such a thrill and an irreplaceable memory. Moreover, the variety of jobs within broadcast journalism is outstanding, the idea to go to work and not know what your job will entail that day because it includes so many different events and stories, which need coverage is so exciting for me personally. Teamwork is personally a strong skill of mine as I communicate effectively to others, which would be put to good use within broadcast journalism. Finally, the range of job opportunities which I could put my practical skills to use in, are broadcasts which I persistently follow, but also influence and inspire me personally (television, radio and...

In the second quarter RLECC regular meeting held last week, the Sub-Committee on Intelligence Coordination (SCIC) identified the installation of the CCTV as a more effective tool in the anti-criminality campaign in the city. Accordingly, installation of CCTV systems especially in major business establishments and in identified crime-prone areas would lead criminals to be apprehensive in perpetrating their crimes. Atty. Elmer Sagsago of the Department of Justice has suggested that...
