...I have had a few heartaches throughout my life: my parent’s divorce, moms breast cancer, grandpas death, and having a bad break up. Everyone in their life goes through at least one heartache, or what some people may call a “heart break” or “heartbroken.” Life always throws things at you that you need to learn to deal with, through my experiences I have learned a few tricks to get through the bad times and come out as a stronger person. The first step you have to do is give yourself time to be sad. Give yourself at least two days where you can cry all you want, eat chocolate, lay in bed, let all those emotions pour out. After those two days, the number one thing to make your self feel better is to look your best. Its proven that if you make yourself look good, you start to feel good, it also brings back some of your confidence. The second step, make sure you surround yourself with people that make you happy and are able to talk to. Talking about how you feel to people you trust keeps yourself from keeping your emotions inside, because if that happens then your thoughts and emotions boil up inside until your going to have an emotional break down. No matter what happens and how low you feel, never push your friends or family away because those are the people that are always there for you and truly want the best for you. Try and keep your mind of things; hang out with friends, take up a hobby, focus on school. Opening yourself up to new experiences opens you up to new people...

...“The Broken Heart” Analysis In John Donne’s poem, “The Broken Heart”, Donne shows the predacious nature of love and the true faintness of the heart through the use of metaphors. This poem sets a mood of despair and sorrow; moods that reveal the regret of love. It opens the reader’s eyes to realize just how vulnerable the heart can be when dealing with love. Donne associates love with the negative; he portrays it as some evil entity that overtakes people without warning and, if not careful, destroys them from the inside, out. In the first stanza of Donne’s poem, he describes how long the oh-so-terrible phenomenon of love lasts. He compares it to the plague and claims it has stuck with him for an entire year. He states that anyone who claims to have only been in love an hour, or a short duration at all, “is stark mad.” Donne makes a clear point that love simply cannot decay so soon. He compares the duration of love to a flask of powder burning in one day. I assume that it would take quite some time to use an entire flask of powder given the context of the text [small amounts of gun powder was used in the 1700’s and 1800’s for guns each time they were to be fired, and unless one of the soldiers chambered every round as fast as a sub-machine gun, it is very unlikely that they would have gone through an entire flask in one day]. Stanza two reveals Donne’s ideas about the characteristics of love and the heart. He says that once the heart has fallen into the hands of love, it...

...have a “broken heart”? Most people understand that having a “broken heart” references a state of extreme grief or sorrow, typically caused by the death of a loved one or the ending of a romantic relationship. But is there any additional truth to this saying? This study examines the medical implications of having a ‘broken heart’ by establishing a correlational relationship between the loss of a romantic partner and the mortality rates of widowers due to heart-related diseases. By tracking the mortality rates of 4,486 widowers of 55 years of age and older, over a period of 9 years, the researchers made some interesting findings: that within the first 6 months of bereavement, the mortality rate for widowers was 40% above that for matched controls, and that the greatest increase in mortality during these first 6 months came from heart-related diseases. No significant conclusions could be made about the relationship between the cause of wife’s death and the cause of her widower’s, nor about the impact of social class on widower’s mortality rate. We also examine the study’s methodology and provide reasonable recommendations to some of its shortcomings. One practical application of statistics and probability is in the area of medical research. In ‘Broken Heart: A Statistical Study of Increased Mortality Among Widowers’, published by the British Medical Journal, researchers wanted to find out if one could really ‘die of a broken heart’. To test...

...Brooke Allen Professor Rita Wisdom English 1302.20055 17 October 2013 Broken Heart, “The Story of an Hour.” A beautiful, young, fair skinned woman died of heart disease. How could someone so young and potentially full of life have a heart disease that would kill? The question is though, what kind of heart disease did she die from, physical or emotional? Louise died from an emotional heart disease, in other words a broken heart. Some would say Mrs. Louise Mallard from “The Story of an Hour” was relieved when she heard her husband had been killed in a tragic accident and she died when she saw her husband clearly alive walk in the front door, her heart shattered at the realization she would no longer be free. Louise was relieved when she heard the new that her husband had died because she had always felt trapped. Back in this day and age, making marriage meant for some women a form of slavery. “When she hears the news of her husband’s death, Mrs. Mallard’s obliviousness to the beauty of life breaks down under the powerful impact of emotion.”(Jamil.pg215) Before this moment she didn’t even think there was a reason to live anymore. But now as she sits in the bathroom daydreaming out the window she can see all the possibilities. In an article by Jennifer Hicks called “An overview of “The Story an Hour”” it makes a very good point that “Mrs. Mallard is not “paralyzed” by the significance that she is alone.”(Hicks) Which also shows that she was not in shock like some readers...

...Rental Heart – Kirsten Logan Without a heart your body is useless. When your heart stops beating, you live until your brain dies from lack of oxygen, but in this short story the narrator lives perfectly fine while changing hearts. This short story is basically about restarting peoples’ ability to love, but also of how real love can overcome technology in place to fake it. This subject is exactly what the main character is dealing with in the short story “The Rental Heart”. That leads me to the setting of the story. The shorty, “The Rental Heart” is written by Kirsten Logan in 2010. We do not know where and when the short story takes place. Neither do we know if the main character is a he or she. In my interpretation of the short story, I have interpreted the main character as being a she. The main character is portrayed by a third person limited narrator, because we hear the story from the main characters point of view. Seen from the main characters point of view we get a description of the surroundings and feelings the main person is dealing with. The short story has two big flashbacks. Grace is first presented as the girl the main character falls in love with, with no risk of being hurt. On the way to the rental place the narrator looks back and remembers all the times it has been done before and in the end we see the narrator in Grace’s arms again. In the beginning of the short story, we get introduced to the “heart rental place”. This is a place where u can rent a heart and...

...intuitively in our guts. But how does it work? Is there an extrasensory perception in the heart that is able to read the feelings in another person’s heart? Love is an assortment of contrasting feelings. To ask, “What is love?” would be the same as asking, “What is running?” or “What is swimming?” If you ever seen someone run or swim, you know exactly what running and swimming entail. The story “The Rental Heart” deal with love and the feeling you get when love fails you. When you are in love everything seems much better but when you break up everything turns dark and empty. It is for most people a fact, that you during your lifetime are going to get your heart broken. The heartbroken feeling of an endless pain that never goes away. Have you ever thought about, ripping out your broken heart, and change it with a new functional heart that will spare you from the heartbroken pain. No? Maybe it is because it is not a possibility in our world, but in “The Rental Heart” the reality is a bit different. The short story is a science fiction story written by the author Kirsty Logan in 2010. The story is told by a first person narrator who also is the protagonist of the story. Try to imagine a life where broken hearts is not an option. That is how the society works in “The Rental Heart”. It is a world where instead of feeling the awful pain of heartbreaks, you can just change your heart at the local heart rental place. Kirsty Logan uses the saying heartbroken literally in this short story...

...Analysis of ”The Rental Heart” The Rental Heart is a story about heartbreak and having to cope with it afterwards. In this story however, it is possible to return the shattered heart and replace it with a new one. In a sense, you avoid the heartbreak and move on without the emotional scarring you endure from getting your heart broken. The story is set in a utopian world where it is possible to rent a mechanical heart thus not having to deal with any real emotions, particularly heartbreak. Starting with a four-year-old relationship ending and a corporeal heart shattered, we follow the love life of the narrator over many years until he/she finally, several rental hearts later, finds someone to love wholeheartedly again. The heart in this story is described as a mechanical one: a box where all emotions and memories of a relationship are stored until you replace it with a new one. Words such as, “sleeker”, “smaller” and “smooth” are used to describe the hearts. In the world we live in today, words such as those are usually used to describe a smartphone or a fancy car. The heart is therefore materialistic, something that can be bought and, when you are done using it, thrown away like garbage. The interesting part is that in real life, the heart does not possess any emotions or control how we feel about another human being. It is all in our heads: memories, feelings, pictures etc. are all stored in our brain. The heart is just a muscle that pumps blood around in our body to keep...

...and having fun. Her image is falsely innocent, bubbly, and a little bit conformist. It does have a positive aspect on youth culture because she’s not over-sexualized like nine out of ten female artists, however is more tasteful when it comes to showing skin, and more subliminal when it comes to singing about sex. This is positive because a lot of teenage girls who look up to her notice that you don’t have to be promiscuous to be “hot”. I can relate to Katy Perry’s image sometimes because she tries to be different without going overboard, and I can relate to her lyrics because everyone has days that aren’t too great, even if it doesn’t have to do with a broken heart. I think that her message reaches out to youth culture in general, because teenage years can be hard sometimes. A lot of times girls, even boys with broken hearts can strongly relate to Katy Perry’s lyrics. Aside from her heartbroken songs, she sings about having fun such as “Last Friday Night”. This is a good reflection of youth because teenagers don’t have many concerns so they find it easy to party and have fun. Although the lyrics are a bit over-exaggerated, no one is to say that it never happens. Katy Perry also sings the song “Firework” which tends to spark a lot of confidence in teenagers, because now a days everyone is judgmental, and you always find flaws within you. With “Firework” it’s a little pick me upper, when you’re feeling down. Katy can easily be compared to Cindy Lauper. Firework-Katy Perry...

...Mending a Broken Heart Admit that these are the five usual things we do after break-ups, listening to sentimental music, thinking of getting back together, looking at the pictures of your exes, excessive eating and changing lifestyle. Mending a broken heart is never easy but aren’t these masochistic? Don’t they just add up to the pain? Just like what other say “time will heal the pain” but isn’t the meantime turning out the mean time? Break-ups are really disillusionment and a good cry simply can’t allocate the pain and surely, morphine won’t help. And though it can make you numb, even liquors can’t drown your sorrows. But whether you did the break-up or you are the one who gets’ busted, there are ways to make your situation somewhat easier to bear so you can move on. One thing is to never fantasize about your getting back together, remember that assuming and expecting is the root of all heartaches. The first and hardest part of moving on is to dispose everything that reminds you of your ex: pictures, favourite music together, monthsary or anniversary gifts, couple shirts, letters, everything! And cutting all the lines of communication as well as blocking him/her on your facebook. Never mind if he/ she will feel you’re bitter because this is the fastest way of moving on. Next is to make yourself busy. Instead of locking yourself up in your room, spend time doing necessary things like working, sporting, exercise/jog and bonding with friends. Another good option is going into...

...The heart of a broken story. PLOT. This story is about a writer who fails in his attempt to write a lovely tender boy- meets- girl story for Collier´s. He tries several pieces of writing with different plots each but he finds out at the end that his objective was unaccomplished. He finds really difficult to get Justin Horgenschlag ( a thirty-dollar-a-week- printer´s assistant and Shirley Lester ( as pretty as a picture)together, so he tries different way of doing it. He tries to make thme meet but they resist to it because of their on nature and due to being completely different. Justin Horgenschlag was a thirty-dollar-a-week printer´s assistant, who felt completely in love with Shirley Lester at first sight. She was a twenty years old ( eleven years younger than Justin), was five-foot-four (bringing her head to level of Horgenschlag´s eyes), weighed 117 pounds (light a leather to carry). She was an stenographer, lived with and supported her mother. Agnes Lester, an old Nelson Eddy fan. She was as pretty as a picture. He had neither the looks, personality of good clothes to gain Shirley´s interest under the circumstances to steal her heart. the writer tried diferrent options to get them together which were at the end failures. He could try a love monologue performed by Justin or an excuse to talk to her which were totally unsuccessful owning to the fact that he wasn´t her cup of tea showing any interest in him. He might have fainted which could be totally embarrassing...

...How to mend a broken heart Going through a heartbreak can feel like being underwater when you need to breath. Mending a broken heart is not an easy quick process and can be time consuming. The person in this situation can feel there is no light at the end of the tunnel. A broken heart can be caused by one of many devastating occurrences or scenarios in life, such as the passing of a loved one, losing/not getting your dream job or the infamous breaking up with your significant other, which this essay will concentrate on. People build their lives with someone they trust and care for, and then, in a blink of an eye, it can be. This can leave most people angry and sorrowful, questioning themselves and possibly their future. Once a person has past the grieving stage and the hours of crying themselves to sleep, then this person must give themselves some “me time”. They must make time for themselves. People sometimes get caught up in a routine with their daily lives, especially after a break up. They should take a weekend and do things that make them happy, whether it’s hiking, biking, cooking or hanging out with friends that make them happy. Doing things that you love will not only distract a person from the heartache but can help a person realize they can be happy again. Writing down one’s feelings in a journal is a good coping mechanism. It can purify the mind through expression, thus resulting in happiness. Understanding and forgiving are major contributing factors in the...

...The rental heart The rental heart by Kirsty Logan is about a person who is dating a lot of people and gets heartbroken every time they part ways so the main character goes to the heart rental place and rents a new heart to mend their broken heart. Throughout the story we hear about seven different partners, both men and women. The main character is currently dating Grace but looks back to past relationships. We are not told if the main character is male or female, so my interpretation is they could be gender neutral or a woman just like the author, it might be written from personal experience. She dates a lot of people, so she’s desperate for other people’s affection, but she can’t deal with the pain that comes with it, so every time she breaks up with someone she rents a new heart. She’s bisexual because she has partners that are both male and female. We don’t get any information about the setting, but it’s in the future because you can open your chest and switch out your heart for a new one. It’s a first-person narrative so we only see it from the main character's point of view. The rental hearts are a symbol of broken machinery that needs to be replaced, so the broken heart is equivalent to being heartbroken in real life. And opening your chest can be a symbol of opening your heart to other people. The whole story is a symbol of having your heart broken, wishing to replace your heart and to forget bad memories. Her first love was Jacob, and she was very in love with...

...The Rental Heart – analytical essay The human heart is an organ that pumps blood throughout the body; it helps the body create oxygen so we can live. The heart is a crucial part of the human anatomy, and a part we cannot live without. Everything has to be set up rather quickly, but Griffith always made sure not to rush the narrative of the stories he was trying to portray. Instead, Griffith would telescope the action to fit within one reel so that he would shorten the story with a title card or narrative device. It was even reported that Griffith would often insist...
