Why is the sky blue? Where do babies come from? How do planes stay in the air? Like every kid, I’ve always been curious about the world I live in. I think this curiosity is what fuels my interest in science and medicine. This passion has made me want to discover more about the world, whether that be through education or adventuring out into it. My interest in medical science began when I was told that my sister had a heart condition called tachycardia, which meant that her heart beat too many times per minute. Because of this, a large part of my early childhood was spent in hospitals. While in the hospital I recall asking how the different heart rate equipment like the heart monitor and EKG’s worked. With the help of heart-rate control drugs her heart began to beat normally. Today my sister is off of the medication and is as healthy as any teenager. Witnessing the doctors make my sister healthy again made me want to pursue a career in medicine.
My overall goal is to become a successful general pediatrician. To achieve this goal I’m going to have to take the MCAT, go to medical school and my complete my residency. Because I don’t know anyone personally in the medical field, I believe attending the college preparation program will greatly help me achieve my future academic goals. Not only will this program give me a better insight to medicine, but it will also prepare me to become a medical professional. This program will give me the opportunity to examine medicine and find out what it actually is. Since this program consists of lectures and discussions it will help me feel more comfortable with voicing my opinion in discussions. Throughout my years of college I know I have to take a variety of sciences but I don’t know which courses to take and I think attending this program will help me gather information on what it’s like to apply as well as what it’s like to

The Common App Fallacy Summary

...college applications are crapshoot in this day and age" (Beres 79). he is telling us the process to enter to a University and to a college, and what they check to see if you can get into that specific school. For example, they would look at your GPA and most of the student's would have to do an SAT to check what classes does he or she needs for the career that the student is looking for. Beres tells us his experience, he was one out of 11,000 out of 34,000 students to join the New York University freshman class (79). That means that they would accept people that are smarter than others. His friend didn’t had a good GPA so he seems to be a lazy student. It is hard to apply now a...

Diversity

...At the University of Michigan Medical School, we are committed to building a superb educational community with students of diverse talents, experiences, opinions, and backgrounds. What would you as an individual bring to our medical school community? Being Asian in the racially homogenous community of [small town], it was clear: I did not belong. When my father moved to South Korea after my 8th grade year, I was excited to spend summers there. I would finally belong. I was wrong. My excellent Korean language skills let me feign native status but my American mannerisms betrayed me. To Koreans, I was just American. At [university], a diverse community, I sought out Korean-Americans. But they questioned whether I truly understood the Asian-American experience due to my [predominantly white state] upbringing. To them, I was white. While these cultural rejections from my various communities were painful, I learned to recognize individuals as unique entities despite shared identity markers such as race. I vowed to always see the whole person; not just her external stereotypes. I have stayed true to this promise as a teacher in [New York City] and have seen the rewards in the form of fruitful relationships. I will continue to do the same with my patients. My struggles to belong taught me to work easily with a variety of people by adjusting my perspectives without sacrificing my values, and listening carefully to others. I built my own sense of belonging, which was more than my...

...1990). Using proven procedures associated with explicit instruction including process modeling, verbal rehearsal, scaffolded instruction, guided and distributed practice, and self-monitoring, students learn, apply, and internalize a cognitive routine and develop the ability to use it automatically and flexibly (Montague & Dietz, 2009). The metacognitive component of CSI helps students focus on the task and regulate and monitor their performance (Palincsar & Brown, 1984). Instruction in self-regulation strategies promotes strategy maintenance and generalization. Although CSI has been applied to a variety of academic tasks, this Current Practice Alert will highlight its applications in comprehending expository text, writing opinion essays, and solving math word problems. Regardless of the domain in which CSI is used, the approach follows a consistent format: Teachers (a) develop and activate background knowledge of students, (b) describe and discuss the strategy, (c) model application of the strategy, (d) have students memorize the strategy, (e)...

...Tantalo English 101 11/6/13 Essay 3 You’re only as Strong as Your Weakest Link Recently in Michigan there has been a reopening of a dispute traced back to the 1950’s. This argument is whether the use of affirmative action should be used when determining whether to accept or reject the request of an applicant. Affirmative Action refers to policies taken into consideration that may boost someone’s application and thus help them be accepted. These extra policies can used in jobs, universities and other similar competitive based applicable positions, normally they include race, religion or sex. These policies limit the field of applicants and thus make applying for an opening unfair to all that are not helped by it. It also helps create a wider gap in what we would want to have, equality. Instead of focusing on the helping it hides the origins of the original problem which is insufficient help to specific areas of cities, states and counties. During the year of 1978, the court case, Regents of the University of California v. Bakke was a major debate towards that of Affirmative action. Bakke was a 33 year old that had applied to UC Davis Medical School. Even though he had outstanding perquisites he was denied because of the school’s affirmative action helping minorities gain entrance even though they had lower scores. Upon learning of this Bakke decided to take the UC system to court upon which he won and was allowed attendance to the university. Traditionally, we have believed...

...SOCIAL MEDIA IN HIGHER EDUCATION Neil Selwyn This essay was first published in The Europa World of Learning 2012. For further information see the final page of this PDF or visit www.worldoflearning.com. © Routledge 2011, all rights reserved. INTRODUCTION Few people will have failed to notice the recent emergence of social media—especially much-publicized applications such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Wikipedia. Even the most casual of internet users will now be aware of the notion of social network sites and blogs, maybe even wikis and virtual worlds. Since being declared Time Magazine‘s ‘Person of the Year’ at the end of 2006, social media have come to dominate the ways in which digital technology is now used around the world. Of course, there are distinct geographical and cultural variations within this global adoption—whereas people in the USA may log on to Facebook and Twitter, Chinese users are more likely to access Renren and NetEase. Yet in all these guises, the general principles of social media remain the same. These are internet applications that rely on openly shared digital content that is authored, critiqued and re-configured by a mass of users. Social media applications therefore allow users to converse and interact with each other; to create, edit and share new forms of textual, visual and audio content; and to categorize, label and recommend existing forms of content. Perhaps the key characteristic of all these social media practices is that of ‘mass...

Linguistic Expression of Politeness in the Chinese Culture

...to Wikipedia, “Chinese culture (Chinese: 中華文化) is a broad term used to describe the cultural foundation, even among Chinese-speaking regions outside of mainland China.” It is a broad term that covers almost all the aspects of life and the Chinese culture is considered very rich. Culture is defined as “the ideas, beliefs, and customs that are shared and accepted by people in a society” (Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, 1995). In every culture, one aspect is considered essential and that is politeness. It goes the same with the Chinese culture where politeness is hardly regarded and one element under politeness is highly crucial, which is the importance of ‘face’ or face work. Politeness is best expressed as the practical application of good manners or etiquette. Politeness can vary from one culture to another and what is considered polite in one culture might be considered not in another. Politeness includes behaving and speaking correctly with consideration of other people’s feelings. For example, giving your seat to a disabled person in the LRT. Since culture is considered the institution of life, politeness is highly dependent on its culture. It goes the way the culture goes and it shapes the society under that particular culture through the family up-bringing and also education. Politeness can be divided into three main elements which are the importance of ‘face’, terms of address and also speech acts. Discussion “Face” It is known that the ‘face’ or mian...

The Challenges of Online Education

...quality education to students who are not physically on-site. As with every new invention and the benefits they bring. challenges may come along too. This essay will talk about the challenges of online courses on education. One of the challenges that online courses have to make a good impact on education is delivering quality courses that may equal or exceed the classic face-to-face courses and be accessible to some unusual students such as full time employees wishing to go back to school, students who wish to take summer courses while being at home or simply students who wants to get their degree online. (Suarez-Brown, Turner, Grice and Hankins, 1997). Is very important that Instructors learn to understand technology and know what tools are available to fully use the internet for a positive learning experience. For example, for face to face communication between students and instructors would videoconference programs such as Skype and Trillian, and for group gathering information that could simulate a classroom, they could use a program like Blackboard or Webtycho. Instructors can also use programs like Camtasia, a screen recording software, to do tutorials on the fly so students can understand and have a near real time experience and learn a task just like if the professor were teaching it in the classroom. (Suarez-Brown, Turner, Grice & Hankins, 98) A important...

Challenges of an Australian Hr Manager May Face in London

...Central Queensland University Australia | Challenges of an Australian HR manager may face in London | | Subject: HRM in the Global Environment HRMT20022 Subject: HRM in the Global Environment HRMT20022 Over the last few decades the number of expatriates is increasing worldwide. These men and women represent a very important asset for organisations which are developing new business across the world. These expatriates are generally sending abroad to develop strategies or resolve problems in the host country. Consequently, the organisation has to be informed of any issue that expatriates might face and affect the work abroad in terms of international human resource management (IHRM) and industrial relations (IR) issues. Deb (2009) define IHRM as ‘a strategic process of managing a global and diverse pool of talented people in such a way as to achieve aims and objectives of the organisation both at parent and subsidiary level successfully, follow ethical practices on human and business issues and be adaptable to local cultural norms and other human needs and aspirations’. And Dowling, Festing and Engle (2013, p.242) define IR as ‘The board field of study that looks at wider issues of work and employment’. The purposes of this essay are to identify and discuss the IR and HRM issues an expatriate from Melbourne could face while living and working in London. In relation to Industrial relations issues, the role of unions, employment contracts, regulations, visas, taxation...
