It appears in Packer’s short story collection, Drinking Coffee Elsewhere, which was published in 2003 to great acclaim. The story is about a Brownie troop of fourth-grade African American girls from suburban Atlanta, Georgia, who go to summer camp. At the camp, they encounter a troop of white girls and believe that one of the white girls addressed them with a racial insult. The African American girls resolve to beat up the white girls. “Brownies” is a story about racism as it is experienced by young girls, but it has a twist. The African American girls discover that the situation is not as clear-cut as they had believed, and as they return home on the bus, Laurel, the African American girl who narrates the story, tells them of an incident in her family involving a white Mennonite family. As she tells the story, she comes to an unsettling realization about racism and the nature of human life. Brownies Summary “Brownies” takes...

...Baked with Tolerance The short story “Brownies” by ZZ Packer is about a troop of girl scouts who are away at Camp Crescendo summer camp. The story tells of an all black Girl Scout troop of brownies who form this rivalry with all of the white girl scouts, who are known as Troop 909. As soon as the brownies arrive, some of the girls begin to question why they are at camp with white girls. Snot, one of the brownie troop members, finds out that the girls in Troop 909 are special needs children. When she discovers this, she then starts to think that Camp Crescendo is just a place where rejects and outcasts are sent. During their time at the camp, Brownie Troop members Snot and Daphne get the opportunity to grow and discover that they are their own person, and not just followers of Arnetta. Many themes are touched upon in “Brownies”. The story mainly revolves around the themes of tolerance, jealousy, and bullying. Tolerance is something that every human being should have for everyone. People who practice intolerance by being jealous and bringing down others don’t realize that it’s not only harmful to the victim, but it’s harmful to them as well. The trip to Camp Crescendo for Arnetta and Octavia was just something they were required to do. It also became an opportunity for them to harass other troop members who were less fortunate than they were. They examined and commented on everything about Troop 909. They also made fun of them at every opportunity they recieved. For example...

Finally I was like okay well I didn’t know he had a girlfriend because he told me that he was single. So I get up and start walking to the door and I turn around slap him and the face and then tell him off and then I left. This time i tried egg less brownies. i substituted egg with condensed milk and orange juice. that is a wrong combination of mixing condensed milk and orange juice, as the milk gets curdled. yes it curdled a bit, but once i added the flour, everything went fine and it resulted in yummy and delicious brownies. I managed to click step wise pictures, but could not click few steps. excuse me for that. You can skip the orange juice and add water for the measurement told, along with the dark chocolate while melting it. i will explain this in step wise pictures, so you can get a clear idea. When you are baking egg less cakes or brownies, the recipe either calls for Milk, condensed milk or butter milk. and also vinegar or any other citric based one like orange juice is added. actually the citric when mixed with baking soda and baking powder(its a chemistry stuff) gives you a fluffy soft cake. ...Low Fat Chocolate Brownies From the title of this paper, you might think that these brownies wouldn’t taste exceedingly delightful. However, these brownies are extremely scrumptious and favorable for your body. When I was 10 years old, I watched as my mother made the brownies that I craved and loved. As she started to pour the flour, I ran up to her and told her that I wanted to learn how to make these brownies. She gave me a wide smile and took me step by step through the process. ..."Hello, my name is Laurel, but my friends call me “Snot”. I am an African American and in the fourth grade. I am going to tell you a story about my adventure at Camp Crescendo, a summer camp for fourth graders near the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia. I announced that by the second day of camp, all the girls in my Brownie troop had decided they were going to "kick the asses" of every girl in Brownie Troop 909, who were all white girls. The other black girls and myself took a dislike to the white girls when we first saw them. Arnetta, our ringleader, said they smelled "like Chihuahuas. Wet Chihuahuas." When she said that they were like "Caucasian Chihuahuas," we all went into fits of laughter. They regard the word Caucasian as a hilarious term of abuse that can be used in almost any situation. We all have seen whites before but have never had much to do with them. But the ten white girls we encounter at the camp are closer to us and, therefore, more real and capable of exciting envy and hatred. At the end of the first day at camp, Arnetta reports she heard one of the white girls refer to Daphne, a black girl, as "a nigger." On prompting by Arnetta, Daphne, a quiet girl, nods her head to confirm that the derogatory term was used. Arnetta tells the other girls that they cannot let the white girls get away with using that word about them. She told us that we must teach the white girls a lesson. Janice suggests that they put daddy-long-legs in the white girls' sleeping bags, and when...

...I could smell my grandma’s sweet and sour meatballs cooking in the oven, and looked over to see warm, crispy potato latkes sitting in a pan ready to be devoured. I focused my attention back to the brownies and began to help my sisters. My job was to mix together the melted butter and chocolate chips with the sugar, eggs, and vanilla. To me, the flour was always so tricky to keep in the bowl and would always sprinkle everywhere creating an image of snow around the kitchen. My grandma and sisters laughed at me as I was covered in flour and a sticky mess! Once I got cleaned up, the brownie batter was ready to go into the oven. My sister’s and I would always watch the batter begin to rise as if it was the most interesting thing we’ve ever seen. The aroma of sweet chocolate and moist cake filled the air of my grandparent’s apartment. Finally the brownies were ready, and I was astonished at how they turned into perfectly brown, gooey brownies from such a mess I had created. My grandma helped me carry the pan of brownies to the table, which was decorated so beautifully with gold plates, glass cups, and flowers. Everyone gathered at the table and began to eat, laugh, and share...

...Week 3 Ethics In todays society businesses are under the impression that the community owes them for their establishment and for what they bring to the town or city. In the film, Greyston Brownies, I assessed, the film deals with the issues of the direction that Greyston Brownie business was building towards. These issues were very unique and unselfish when considering the state of the economy. While watching the clip of the CEO of Greyston talking about how their business is set up to serve the community; not for the community to serve the business ("Greyston bakery. the," 2009). He explained how over time the views of the world have changed from a religious perspective to a social perspective and how currently business has overtaken cities and towns. The major factor behind Greyston is that it has a split bottom line, which means that it has a social mission and a profit mission. Their social mission is to open their doors to struggling members of their community and the profit mission is to make sure that the profits from their business are invested towards growing the community development ("Greyston bakery. the," 2009). The film showed the community Greyston Brownies is located in it appears, is a struggling town for many. Some citizens want to work and others don’t show the ambition to support themselves or their families. In the current economy, many cities are fighting this problem. Even though it wasn’t proven during the clip it could have played a major role...

...product will equal fifty cups of coleslaw. Finally, to the sweet stuff, sweet tea and desserts. Living in Southwest Georgia in June it is hot therefore, there needs to be plenty of sweet tea to drink. If each person drinks about four cups of tea then there needs to be about two hundred cups of tea because four times fifty is two hundred. To keep the sweet tea cold, the three coolers and each cooler holds about five bags of ice each. Therefore, there needs to be fifteen bags of ice because three times five is fifteen. Now for dessert, there will be brownies and ice cream. If each person eats about two brownies and each box makes about fifteen brownies then there needs to be enough to make one hundred brownies because fifty times two is one hundred. If each box makes fifteen brownies then there needs to be about seven boxes of brownie mix because fifteen times seven is one hundred and five, which will be enough for each person to get two brownies, with some left over. For the other dessert, which is ice cream, each person will get about one cup so there needs to be about fifty cups of ice cream.
