“Changes We Face”

There a number of factors that contributes to the constant change in our communities today. In this paper I will discuss the factors involved to overcome generational poverty, the challenges the aged faced due to lack of employment, changes women face through different stages in life, and my perspective and approach towards different populations.
The Effects of Poverty
Poverty involves a complex array of risk factors that affect the population in a multitude of ways. The four primary risk factors afflicting families living in poverty are emotional and social challenges, stressors, cognitive lags and health and safety issues. Graber …show more content…
The poverty risk factors makes everyday living a struggle; they In other words, one problem created by poverty brings another, which in turn contributes to another which leads to other consequences. A head injury, for example, can be a difficult and trying event for a child living in poverty. If the child has limited access to proper medical care, the child may experience emotional damage, mental illness, or depression. The child can also become ashamed of their injury and outcome and it can prevent him or her from getting necessary help. Another outcome of this kind of injury is a personality disorder that can cause ADD or ADHD. It's safe to say that the factors involved with poverty are damaging to the physical, emotional, and well-being of children and their families. Information from the Infant Health and Development Program show that 40 percent of children living in poverty had low levels in at least two areas of functioning. The two areas were physical growth and emotional development. Poverty also has a direct effect on children ability to complete school, and their living conditions. This is getting harder and harder to be the case as time goes on. The elderly face many challenges today. It is hard to get a job at an older age because the younger generation thinks they are not capable of doing a good job. Age is supposed to be embraced, but instead in this generation it is certainly looked down upon. Most aged people are discriminated against. They are turned down a job because of their age and not their capabilities. They aren’t given a chance to prove they can do a physically demanding job. This factor alone makes it extremely difficult for the aged to get gainful employment. In the future it is said a change for the aged will occur. “The labor force aged 60-64 will increase by 55 million between now and the year 2020.”(Markovic’,2013). This means that the elderly will most likely have more access to employment than they have now in this country. While that may be a positive factor, the year 2020 is not today. Also what has to be achieved from now until then to make sure this statistic comes to pass? A positive jump start can begin with the assistance with the elderly and their medical treatment. Medical assistance for the elderly is at an all-time high. Without medical assistance, the elderly are not able to get certain jobs. They can’t afford their medications and living necessities on disability alone, and the government waits so many years to give any kind of financial supplement.
