...urgently required to attract investors, said Alihussain Akberali, chairman of BSRM, one of the biggest industrial groups of the country. The government needs to lay the future pricing policy on market-based prices of all inputs to power projects, he said in an interview. “We gave the Board of Investment (BoI), some nine months back, four to five proposals about the problems we were facing in setting up the largest steel plant and a power project. No one from the BoI has so far called us to hear our problems nor were our applications sent to relevant departments." "How can there be industrialisation under such circumstances? he questioned. The major chunk of foreign investment is in the export processing zones (EPZs) where labour intensive industries are being set up and which offer a platter of gas, power and tax incentives. But no importance is being given to import substitution industries, he said. “We need active support from different ministries of land, water, power, roads and highways, home and energy to help us smoothly set up the two major Tk 3,000 crore projects which will generate employment for about 1,500." "Today pillar to post, we are just groping in the dark. Of course we are used to it but at what cost to the country?" It will be impossible for foreign companies to come to the country to set up heavy industries outside the EPZs, Akberali said. Talking about his own group, the BSRM chairman said there were only 300 employees to start with and today the...

...glorious future. Before 1971 Bangladesh did not have any steel mill and even after the liberation there were only a few steel factories in the country. In 1990s the actual development began in this sector through a revolution. During that period the building constructing agencies or developer companies came forward to build modern infrastructure. Then with the increasing demand, new investors started investing in steel or rod production. In 2012 we have almost 400 mills across the country including Dhaka, Chittagong. Although most of them are manual steel plants, 30 mills among them are automated. Many steel producing companies have gained reputation as a brand. Among them, BSRM, KSRM, Anwar Steel, AK steel, Rahim steel, Abul khayer Group are worth mentioning. Today the highest steel producing company is BSRM. They are doing business for 60 years. Their production is almost six and half lakh ton per year which meets 26% demand of the local market. Now grade 60 rods are being slowly replaced by g500 rods which a number of rolling mills in our country are now manufacturing. With g500, the real estate builders and developers can also save minimum 15% further quantity of steel than g60 but then...

...1. Introduction: For volatile markets, Sir John Templeton said, “Bull markets are born on pessimism, grow on skepticism, mature on optimism, and die on euphoria.†For our investment simulation project, we started out with TK. 10, 00,000 cash at our disposal which we invested in the trading of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) stocks, which is a bullish market. However, investing in such a volatile market required good initial research, investment strategies, and a well-diversified portfolio .Since this was a three-phase project, some adjustments were made to offset market downturns and ultimately increase the portfolio value in our account. As the market was unpredictable, our strategies were focused on risk minimization as well as loss minimization by diversifying our portfolio & by observing other measurement tools like Sharpe ratios, Jensen alpha, correlations & others. In addition our portfolio management was not intensified into these formulas as we also considered some of our predictions about this volatile market & companies. 2. Objective: The main objective of our project is to build up strong investment strategies to cope up with this volatile market with maximizing after tax wealth. To do this we realized that diversifying our portfolio would be the best strategy & that’s why we tried to invest in more than ten industries so that downturn in one sector can be offset by the rise in another sectors stock return. Therefore, while determining our investment...
