For this project, it wants us to explain the users’ needs and requirements in a building and its built environment in which we chosen. Also, it needs us to identify and describe the conditions of the elements, structures, components and its accessories. In addition, it aims to improve our analytical and communication skills. As a result, I was inspired from the objectives and get a lot of useful information from my buildings of the project.
There are 3 main types of data in which I collected from the project. First is the basic information of the building. We went to the place for site visit. Then we use ruler or tape measure to indicate the parts of the building, such as the height of door of building, the length of the stair, the height of the staircase, etc. Next is the survey result of the building performance. We need to design a survey in which aims to investigate the opinions of the residents of the building, it is about their feeling of building performance. For example, we looked into the barrier free access in which at there is enough or not, or the noise problem at there. Also, we have asked the extra opinions of the residents that in which part of the building need improvement such as its finishes of the building.
After the group project and the presentation, I have learnt many useful things that I never met before.
At the beginning of the project, I think it is just a simply task for me to do, like in the secondary school. No matter the school report or the school assignment before, all the information are searched from the Internet, and I just collect these information and copy and paste in my project or assignment. When there is needed a teamwork for the school project, we communicate through the mobile phone only, and we done our part of the project without viewing the process each other. And it combined each part without any correction consequently. So I have done everything in a wrong way instead of working hard and cooperating with group mates to finish the assignment or project. After entering the university, everything is changed. Almost all the works in university are projects even some of the projects are required to form a group in more than 10 people. So I feel everything is different compare to the previous tasks in secondary school. In this project, I need to find 14 people to form a project group to do the work.
First, I must find my group mates. Because of the project is started at the beginning of the semester, we still did not know each other. So I needed to make new friends to form the group and I started to know the classmates who are next to me. After a long time, I have paid effort to find all group mates at the end of lesson. We switched mobile phone number each other, and decided when should we start the project. Through this process, I have learnt that the school network is important for future school works. I must make more friends to broaden my network.
When I asked my group mates to come out to talk about the project, I found that it is a difficult matter for us to find a time to come out together because they have different class schedules even we have dated for several time but still not successful, so we must used the holiday time to talk about the division of the project. Through this process, I have learnt that it is imperative for me to have a good time management because I must use my personal time in public works in some situation. And I must set a time schedule for my personal time in order to have the time to do the work no matter in project or personal assignment.
Third, when I started to do the research for my project, I think that I can finish it in the way of searching data from the Internet only because I think all the things in our life are come from Internet. But I realized that it was incorrect. When I searched the data of my building from the Internet, there is nothing about my building. I was shocked at that time. So I needed to bring my measuring tools and go to the building for site visit. I must use the measure tapes to indicate the height of the constructions and recorded the data I got. After collecting the information, I needed to go to the library then found the documents in which about this type of the building. It spent me nearly a whole week to finish the works. Through this process, I have learnt that I cannot collect the information from network only. I must try my best to find all the data related in many ways and analysis it to get the useful information for my studies.
Although there is a number of information collected through this project, but we still not use them all in report and presentation because of the time is not enough. So it is necessary for us to consider our time management of the project that whether should we pay more attention in the project or not. On the other hand, we have not enough cooperative because half of the time in doing project is depended on instant messaging. The time we seen each other is little. So we must improve our teamwork to get a higher quality job.
To conclude, I have acted a character of the group secretary to remind my group mates that what their parts should included. During the process of the project, we collect many useful information about a building, it let me learnt many useful things with the reflections inside. I think the project can let me learn more things that I never met before. It is interesting and I hope that it will have second chance for us to do the project together.
