The Problems That is Associated with The Bubonic Plague

The plague that started in Bombay, India and then moved to the north and west regions. This is where the death toll averaged out to be around 12 million. [76] The Bubonic plague in India seemed similar to the black death because it described the poor housing and confined quarters that people lived, as well as the homes had been infested with rats and had animals living in the houses with humans. This was very unsanitary to say the least. The Indian plague caused a number of issues, such as the millions of deaths, mothers that stop nursing their babies, and families that walked away and left their sick relative's in their homes and …show more content…
People who lived there did not want anything to do with the hospitals, or places that cared for the sick. [81] This was the government trying to contain the sick in one area, so that the plague would not spread further. People were very hostile and angry, and refused to go to these places. Mothers were afraid to breastfeed their babies because they were scared that they would become sick, if they carried this disease and would pass it on to their children. Many mothers feared hospitals because they believed that doctors and residents carried the disease and spread it to people even if they were thought not to be infected. [82] Part of the problem was the unsanitary environment that they lived in, this did not help the mothers or children. During this time there were searching homes and trying to disinfect the areas that were called home. Families would leave elderly and other family members that were sick and would flee to other places to avoid becoming sick. Families did not like the commissioner to invade their privacy and dealing with the sick or the loved ones that have passed on, because it went against some of the families Hindu and Muslim religious beliefs. Population analyses provided by the Office of National Statistics along with the Bills of Mortality that were published on a weekly basis during the plague have concluded that around one hundred thousand people living in England died due to the plague, which was extremely significant because the estimated population of England at the time was under four hundred thousand people. The devastation that Londoners experienced during this outbreak was unexpected and far worse than any previous outbreak, leading many people to search for both an explanation for the plague’s occurrence and a successful way to stop it. Although modern research has attributed the origin of the bubonic plague to fleas and rats, medical and scientific technology was not advanced enough in 1665 to come to that conclusion; the invention of the microscope was necessary in order to study the specific mode of infection. At the time of the Great Plague, there was no revelation of the real cause of the transmission and infection of the plague; there were only general ideas of “pestilential miasmas” and “corrupted air” that were largely attributed to religious causes, such as being a punishment sent from God.
