...2551 TORSIONAL EFFECTS AND REGULARITY CONDITIONS IN RC BUILDINGS Edoardo COSENZA1, Gaetano MANFREDI2 And Roberto REALFONZO3 SUMMARY Earthquake damages at the perimeter of buildings are often the result of excessive deformations caused by torsion during the earthquake. Large torsional responses can be expected if the buildings have large eccentricity and low torsional stiffness. Modern codes, including Eurocode 8, recognise the importance of the torsional stiffness on the seismic response and include such information in its static torsional provisions. Eurocode 8 states that the static torsional provisions can be applied to torsionally unbalanced buildings with regularity in elevation that satisfies the set of conditions presented in the Annex B of the Code. Present paper shows an overview on the EC8 torsional provisions including the code background and the comparison with other codes (UBC, etc.). On the other side the EC8 provisions could be improved during the revision process. In fact recent studies on the static torsional provisions of Eurocode 8 show that the static torsional provisions generally are satisfactory in order to limit additional demands when the building has a large torsional stiffness, but the provision seems to be deficient when applied to torsional flexible models. Moreover, the behaviour of buildings designed in High Class of ductility (“HD”) is more complex. This paper compares most of the results existing in the literature, suggests proposals...

...1.1 Introduction Industrialized Building System (IBS) is the phrase used by the industry and government in Malaysia which stand for the adoption of construction industry and the use of prefabrication of components in building construction. IBS is defined as a construction technique in which components are manufactured in a controlled environment (on or off site), transported, positioned and assembled into a structure with minimal additional site work [1-4]. It consists of precast component systems, fabricated steel structures, innovative mould systems, modular block systems and prefabricated timber structures as construction components [3]. Parts of the building that are repetitive but difficult and too time consuming and labor intensive to be casted onsite – are designed and detailed as standardized components at the factory and are then brought to the site to be assembled [3]. The onsite casting activities in IBS utilize innovative and clean mould technologies [1-3]. The construction industry has started to embrace IBS as a method of attaining better construction quality and productivity, reducing risks related to occupational safety and health, alleviating issues for skilled workers and dependency on manual foreign labor, and achieving the ultimate goal of reducing the overall cost of construction. Apart from this, it offers minimal...

...Introduction and Problem Identification The paper is based on the review of Business Database Company (BDC). BDC is a company that specalises in the creation of large database and the formulation of these data into report that are sold to business organisation and consultancies. The company operates a bureaucratic organisational structure. As explained by T. Burns and G. M stalker, 1961: Bureaucracies which was also referred to as mechanistic system of running an organisation, “…defines his function together with the methods, responsibilities, and powers appropriate to them; in other words, however, this means that boundaries are set.” This implies that procedures and protocols are being followed to get things done. Due to the increasing rate in the technology advancement and the employment of the new graduates, the new sales manager wants to embraces a more flexible and informal system which according to T. Burns and G.M stalker, 1961 can be referred to as the “organic system” in which an individual regards his/herself as fully responsible for the execution of a particular task. At this point we will be analysing the problems facing the BDC as discussed below: The major problem with BDC is the bureaucracy system in place which is an administrative or management structure marked by hierarchical activities among numerous offices and by fixed procedures. It is a system in which the need to follow rigid or complex procedures impedes effective action. According to David and...

...practice of providing the executives of an organisation, that is, those responsible for making decisions and taking appropriate action, with a concise outline of the major points in a report to save them time. The detail can be pursued in more depth later by a complete reading of the report. The structure of the Executive Summary should follow the structure of the report and include brief statements on the following: definition of the problem aims and objectives methods/data sources key findings conclusions any recommendations for action. The Executive Summary should be brief and succinct, and may use point form to achieve this. As a rule-of-thumb, allow one page for every 5,000 words up to a maximum of five pages, and using headings in longer Executive Summaries. The inclusion of an Executive Summary is not a substitute for discussion/exposition in the full report. Example of an Executive Summary Problem context & Purpose of report Method Results Conclusions Recommendations Limitations This report provides an analysis and evaluation of the current and prospective profitability, liquidity and financial stability of Outdoor Equipment Ltd. Methods of analysis include trend, horizontal and vertical analyses as well as ratios such as Debt, Current and Quick ratios. ...continue on a path of growth and success. Abstract The Walgreens Company is opening a store location on the Pacific Island of Kava. In the analysis phase several problems were identified including how the land and building will be acquired, where the employees will come from and who will provide security are all issues that must be addressed. Walgreens used decision-making tools and techniques to perform the required analysis identifying problems and possible solutions. Brainstorming Decision-making tools and techniques are methods used to help guide one in making decisions. According to University of Phoenix’s decision-making model, framing the problem includes identifying the problem, establishing goals and objectives, and evaluating the impact of the problem (University of Phoenix, 2009a). The executives of the Walgreens Company chose the brainstorming technique to come up with the following options for entering the island country of Kava. Option #1 The first option will analyze the effect of buying bare land and building a new free standing store on the island of Kava. Hiring and training native employees to staff the stores and hiring a private security company are also included in option number one. Table 1.1 outlines the projected costs over the next five years associated with the choices. The building will have an...

...Management Theory Research. Journal of Management Studies 50:1j. Lex Donaldson (Australian School of Business), Jane Qiu (University of New South Wales) and Ben Nanfeng Luo (University of New South Wales), authors of this article, are respectively a Professor of Organizational Design, a Lecturer in International Business and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. When the article was published in 2013, Donaldson had developed his Introducing Statistico-organizational Theory of the Meta-Analytic Organization with the help of his doctoral students Jane Qiu and Ben Nanfeng Luo from which this article is prompted. In this paper, I summarize the article and offer comments about selected aspects, and suggest areas where additional research findings would assist in understanding the article. Article Summary The authors supported Alvesson and Sandberg assumptions that more rigour will fix the problem of uninteresting research publications and their controversy against pedantic literatureReviews who only agree with incremental, gap-spotting research. However, they contested the belief of Alvesson and Sandberg that rigour in research always leads to baleful outcomes; in the opposite ’Rigour’ is used to challenge assumptions. First argument: most interesting research comes from challenging consensus and overthrowing assumptions by introducing new ideas that contain more valid insights about organizations. * ‘Rigour’ can be one way to produce such valid insights. Second argument :’Rigour’...
