Building a New Structure

A lot of thought, decision, and design goes into building a new structure on a school campus. A few of those decisions goes towards what wiring and cabling the building will have. There are quite a few codes, standards, and specifications that needs to be followed. Some of those guidelines are NFPA, NEMA, FCC, UL, and NEC. NFPA stands for National Fire Protection Association. NFPA was founded in 1896 as a nonprofit organization to help protect property, people, and the environment from fire damage. It’s now an international organization representing over 100 countries with 65,000 members. NFPA’s mission is to help reduce the risk of fire through safety requirements, research, codes, and fire-related education. NFPA is published every three years. It covers issues related to electrical safety requirements and it’s not used as a design specification or instruction manual. NFPA publishes 300 codes and standards. They are designed to minimize the risk and effects of fire. Its over 200 technical codes-and standard- development committees and is comprised of over 2,000 volunteer seats. The volunteers vote on revision and proposals in a process that is accredited by the ANSI (American National Standards Institute). NFPA also provides free online access to its codes and standards.

NEMA stands for the National Electrical Manufacturers Association. NEMA is the association of medical imaging and electrical equipment manufacturers and was founded in 1926. It is headquartered in Rosslyn, Virginia with nearly 400 members. NEMA also has offices in Beijing and Mexico City. NEMA’s companies manufacture a diverse set of products, including power transmission and distribution equipment, medical diagnostic imaging systems, factory automation and control systems, and lighting systems. Total shipments in the US alone is $100 billion annually. NEMA also provides forums for the development of technical standards that are in the best interests of the industry and users and collection, analysis, and dissemination of industry data. NEMA is a pacesetting champion for interoperability, safety, environment, and market enhancement through advocacy, standards for products, systems, and technologies, and business information.

FCC stands for Federal Communications Commission. It was founded as part of the U.S. government in 1934. It is an independent U.S. government agency that is overseen by Congress. It consists of a board of five commissioners appointed by the President. The board has the power to regulate electrical-communications systems started up in the United States. Communication systems that include television, radio, telegraph, telephone, and cable TV systems. The FCC regulates interstate and international communications in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories. The FCC’s rules and regulations can be found in Title 47 of the CFR (Code of Federal Regulations).

UL stands for Underwriters Laboratories. UL was founded in 1894. It is a global safety science company. UL has more than a century of expertise innovating safety regulations from the public adoption of electricity to new breakthroughs in nanotechnology, sustainability and renewable energy. It is dedicated to promoting safe living and working environments. UL helps safeguard products, people, and places in important ways by facilitating trade and providing peace of mind. UL certifies, inspects, test, validates, audits, advises, and educates. It provides knowledge and expertise in helping to navigate growing complexities across the supply chain from compliance and regulatory issues to trade challenges and market access. It also works with a diverse array of stakeholders. UL optimizes the supply chain for manufacturers and provides them with a broad range of services that supports every stage of the product life cycle and works with retailers. All around the world, UL delivers expertise and leadership through three strategic business units. These business include Commercial and Industrial, which facilitates customer access to the global marketplace, Consumer, which safeguards the integrity of product performance, and UL ventures, which support innovation essential for the wellbeing of the world.

NEC stands for the U.S. National Electrical Code. It has been published since 1897. It defines five levels of cable for use with LAN. It covers the latest requirements on electrical wiring and equipment installation issues. This includes minimum provisions for the use of connections, voltage markings, conductors, and cables. It also contains specific details on the safe use and installation of signaling conductors and communications.

...My RFP for this building is I will be wiring this entire building with Cat5e cable because it’s cheaper and better to use in a building like this. I will try and get the job done as quickly as possible; it probably will take me about 3 or 4 day to wire this building. I will provide all the labor, material, tools and equipment need for this job. Me and my team will do a great job on wiring your building and have it up in running in no time. I plan to have your Telco room in the back of the building in the left corner with all the theory rooms and labs surrounding it.
