...This review essay is based on the report “Building Safe, Active Communities: Strong foundations by local people”, the third report written by Baroness Helen Newlove, the Government’s Champion for Active, Safer Communities (Newlove, H, 2012). The report covers issues in areas of community safety, voluntary and community sector as well as community engagement. In Baroness Newlove’s view, “local people are the foundations for safe, active communities”. (Newlove, H, 2012). The report, which highlighted various case studies from different communities, is aimed at offering advice, know-how and a map for grassroots activists to follow, which will bring new ideas that have been proven to work. In essence the report called for a change of culture so neighbourhoods no longer see crime, antisocial behaviour and disorder as someone else’s problem. Furthermore, this review essay will highlight how the policy report engages with the ideas and concept of community as discussed in Book 3 of DD208. It will show how the report draws on evidence and constitutes evidence itself. This review will also reflect the entanglement of community, social welfare and crime control concerns as well as responses to the same. Baroness Newlove was appointed the government’s Champion for Active, Safer Communities in October 2010 and has since then worked with communities across the country to discover the needs and wants of grassroots activists. She highlighted the progress in her first two reports and also...

...food, water, and the necessary resources to sustain human life? What if our air was no longer breathable? What if our streets were filled with trash? If our behavior as a society doesn’t change our habits this image can soon become a reality. Going green is necessary to preserve and sustain our required livable resources. In fact we have all gone green without a conscious effort. One aspect of going green that interests me is green construction. Green construction is the ability to construct eco-friendly buildings while efficiently using resources and reducing pollution. This process also continues throughout the buildings life cycle. Green construction has the ability to create and sustain a viable way of reducing the permanent destruction of human resources. USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council) is an organization of members who are dedicated in regenerating and sustaining a healthy environment. USGBC developed an internationally known green construction program called LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). LEED was created “to transform the way buildings and communities are designed, built and operated, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy, and prosperous environment that improves the quality of life” (Foundations of LEED, 2009, Para. 3). ...a team recognize the six dimensions of health in our lives, and feel society is stronger in some areas than others. Areas we would like to see improvements in our social, physical, and environmental health. We can see that it is hard for people to interact with one another in many ways. People do not seem to be able to communicate face to face or feel comfortable with anyone that is not just like themselves. We would like to see people from across the cultures and races learn how to connect in the real world, and see that when we make things better for one, we are really making it better for all. We can do our part by reaching out to others and setting an example of how to treat others and making everyone feel needed and appreciated. Our society is known as an obese nation, and this is causing many avoidable diseases. We need to educate our society on how to make healthy food choices, and how to become physically active. Society cannot achieve optimal health if the environment around us is not healthy. Protecting the planet from pollutants in our water, air or soil will help insure that the food we eat or the air we breathe will not make us sick. Organizing a recycle program in our community, and car pooling will help us avoid inflicting more damage. It seems like our society has forgotten what it takes to be physically fit. So many of us do not want to put in the effort it takes to plan healthy meals or to workout. Many people would...

...workplace deserves a good indoor environment Problems with the quality of the indoor environment have become a new and demanding challenge to occupational health and safety. Modern workplaces resembling office environments that do not have any hazardous exposures originating from work processes can face other problems related to the indoor environment, for example, problems related to substances that are a part of building materials and occur in ventilation. People in Western societies spend more than 90% of their time indoors. Therefore, the quality of indoor environments plays a significant role in their life. Bad indoor air and environments are able to cause work-related symptoms and diseases, while high quality supports well-being and productivity. A good indoor environment not only consists of clean air (including proper humidity, air velocity, and temperature), but also of good acoustics, good lighting, and a good psychosocial environment in the workplace. In Finland, with over 5.5 million inhabitants and 2.5 million employees, the cost of poor indoor environments to society is nearly EUR 1.5 billion a year, mainly as a result of the cost of medical examinations and care, sickness absences, lower efficiency at work, allergies, hospital infections, and cancer. Good indoor environments also seem to affect our creativity, memory, and mood. According to a recent survey of office environments, one out of every three workers complains about constant indoor-air problems, and one out of...

...progressively gained awareness, no longer allowing business actions to remain independent of society endeavors. The obligation or “duty” that has surfaced between organizations and their commitment to the environment and society has typically been the result of enforced government regulations and “bad” publicity. However, Michael Porter and Mark Kramer point out the opportunity that is presented from the application of CSR within a business. Not only can the incorporation be innovative and bode well for the community and economy, but it can equally pose as a competitive advantage by building and capitalizing on shared values. Applying monetary means, resources and expertise in issues specific to an organization allows the business to integrate themselves into society, impact perception and support their business while inflating the economy (Porter & Kramer, 2006).
