...Building on Prior Success By: Jessica Spiegel CIS 175- Intro to Networking Instructor: Ashiq Waheed May 29, 2012 I would have to say I would encourage the President to go ahead with the original set-up that I had suggested. That would be a client/server-based network. The advantage of a client/client/server-based network is that the data files that will be used by all of the users are stored on the one server. Which gives you a central point to setup permissions on the data files, and it will give a central point from which to back up all the data in case data loss should occur. I would recommend they switch to a twisted pair wiring because there are several advantages for the use of twisted pair cabling. It is very flexible to make it very easy to work with. It is also less expensive than coax cable. The reason why twisted pair cable has become so popular is because networking protocols and standards were designed to support twisted pair wiring. There are a few disadvantages such as the casing; the sheath around the twisted pair networking cabling that is relatively thin. It doesn’t have a second insulator like coax and it is a bit more susceptible to electromagnetic interference, and twisted pair is a bit more susceptible to eavesdropping. A virtual private network (VPN) is a private network that interconnects remote (and often geographically separate) networks through primarily public communication infrastructures such as the Internet. VPNs provide security through...

...Assignment 2: Building on Prior Success Prof. Anthony Stevens CIS 175 – Introduction to Networking May 26, 2012 A nеtwоrk operating system (NOS) is the software that runs on a server and enables the server to manage data, users, groups, security, applications, and other networking functions. The primary reason for using networks is to enable clients to communicate and share resources efficiently. Most networks rely on server that exceeds the minimum hardware requirements suggested by the software vendor. To determine the optimal hardware for your servers, be sure to ask the following questions: • What kinds of applications will run on the server? • How many clients will connect to the server? • How much storage space will each user need? • How much downtime, if any, is acceptable? • What can the organization afford? Out of these questions the first one is the most important. For example, use can purchase an inexpensive, low-end server that runs Linux adequately and suffices for resource sharing and simple application services. However, to perform more advanced functions and run resources-intensive applications on your network, you would need to invest in a server that has significantly more processing power and memory. Every application comes with different processor, RAM, and storage requirements. Explain what network operating system you would suggest. ...

...Building on Prior Success After talking with the President of Ocper, Inc., we are to select the peer to peer networking system. The peer to peer networking system should be able to support the company’s new requirements. Peer to peer will allow the additional four servers and also allow the employees the capability to share files. The main objective that peer to peer will meet is helping the company save money with a minimum cost. We a couple of ways to incorporating the four new servers to best accomplish the overall intent of the President. The first option is to place two servers at the main building and the other two servers in another location. Second option is to place three servers at the local building and have one large server at the backup location. Option number one sounds good but will not allow the speed that a company needs and wants. Another major factor with option one is the amount of data that can be stored will be least and that may cause a bigger expenses later. Options two will allow the speed and storage space that every company wants. Have the three servers on site and the large server at another location as a backup will accomplish all the company needs. This options will as allow upgrades at a lower cost if we get the right size larger server. Having three servers on site will allow employees to share multiple files at multiple times. The company will be in control of all future upgrades and can cut ties with the provider if you no longer...

...Building on Prior Success As a new employee with Ocper Inc, with no IT person in place, I sent up a new IT program meeting the needs of the company and the requests of the president of Ocper. Some of the changes I suggested were an upgrade their PC’s to an Ethernet network which will add more speed and stability to their network. I also proposed they upgrade their network to a scalable distributed backbone network centralized around a Cisco Small Business 300 Series Managed Switch SF300-24 (24 ports) at a cost of $224.99 (Networking Design, 2012). The one large item I am proposed to change in their network is the purchase of one (1) Dell Power Edge T310 Server at $3,643.00. This server would suffice what their work is now but it is also something they can grow into (Networking Design, 2012). The Power Edge T310 includes the following: Hard Drives 500GB 7.2K RPM SATA 3.5in Cabled Hard Drive plus one (1) 1TB 7.2K RPM SATA 3.5in Cabled Hard Drive, Power Supply, Non-Redundant, 375W, On-Board Dual Gigabit Network Adapter, DVD-ROM, Internal, 16XDVD, Keyboard and Optical Mouse, USB, Black, English, electronic System Documentation and Open Manage DVD Kit, Power Cord, NEMA 5-15P to C13, wall plug, 10 feet, RD1000, Int SATA Drive w/Cable (Purchase Media separately), Backup Exec 2012 Small Business Edition Agent for Windows 1 yr Maint, Media: QTY 2, Removable Hard Disk Cartridge for RD1000, 640GB Native, and Hardware Support (Networking Design, 2012). ...The best way for employees to remotely access Ocper Inc. network would be through utilizing mobile virtual private network. Mobile VPN setting functions efficiently in situations where the endpoint VPN contains multiple access points. The mobile network can also be accessed using cellular devices carrying data between several Wi-Fi access points. These individuals could utilize modern I-phones, with capability to access VPN connections, as the network connection enables seamless roaming between networks through utilizing wireless connections. The advantage of utilizing this connection remains the ability for the network to connect between different IP addresses without losing information contained in other applications. The mobile VPN allows users to maintain several applications continuously open. While performing this function, the network also allows passing of data, securely over public networks. This capability would immensely assist employees Ocper Inc to access the network continually from several remote locations. Within office settings, however, the Virtual Private Network could be accessed through the conventional connection. This connection presents numerous limitations, making connections insecure when establishing remote connections. When the network becomes interrupted, information could be lost or computing devices could crash (Hallberg, 2009). This network connection, therefore, becomes limited to desktop computers and immobile computing devices. The mobile Virtual...

...Adding Servers 2 The client/server network that you have now converted over to will benefit from Windows Server; I suggest either the 2003 or 2008 version. Windows Server 2003 is older but is still very reliable for the following reasons; “easy to deploy/manage/ and use, secure connected infrastructure, enterprise-class reliability/availability/scalability/ and performance, lower TCO through consolidation and the latest technology, create dynamic intranet and internet web sites, fastest development with integrated application server, work smarter by turning your file server into a powerful collaboration server, automate operations with script-based and policy-based management tools, increase document protection and availability via intelligent file storage, easy to find/share/ and reuse XML web services” (Microsoft Product Information, 2013). Windows Server 2003 is still great and used today but, 2008 is and newer version with added enhancements to its’ older 2003 version. Its’ enhances are “security, reliability, support for remote clients, and performance” (Dean, 2010). Windows 2008 offers a few different editions and I think the standard edition is all you need because it will allow for the data sharing your business needs and it will support your remote services. To incorporate your new servers into your network we have to” determine your networks IP addressing method, verify the hardware requirements, verify that your software is up-to-date, add...

...than earthquakes and flash flooding. Despite the advances over the past few decades there is no “magic bullet” (Dr Charles Connor) in earth hazard prediction, and therefore mitigation – and the success remains very much dependent upon a number of factors including money available, and the number of vulnerable individuals. Firstly, earthquakes, which are caused by sudden movements of the earth’s crust which result in violent shaking, liquefaction, and in extreme cases tsunamis, can to an extent be prepared for and mitigated for, and this is where money is being channelled into. Preparation and planning involves the retrofitting of buildings to create “earthquake-resistant” societies, aseismic design features (including concrete and steel frames to provide stability), as well as planning exclusion zones and evacuation routes in the case of an earthquake. Earthquake prediction is very closely linked to preparedness as if an event is expected; mitigating measures can take place beforehand to reduce the impacts. The earthquake storm theory which suggests that stress is transferred along a fault with each earthquake has predicted an earthquake to hit Izmit, Turkey, an extremely densely populated urban area. Consequently, the Turkish government are now channelling money into retrofitting buildings an enforcing...

...2009 Kale and Singh 45 A R T I C L E Managing Strategic Alliances: What Do We Know Now, and Where Do We Go From Here? by Prashant Kale and Harbir Singh Executive Overview Alliances present a paradox for firms. On the one hand, firms engage in a large number of alliances to secure and extend their competitive advantage and growth; on the other hand, their alliances exhibit surprisingly low success rates. In this paper, we discuss how firms can address these failures by identifying some of the primary drivers of alliance success. First, we discuss how firms can achieve success with any individual alliance by considering critical factors at each phase of the alliance life cycle. Second, we show how firms can increase their overall alliance success by developing and institutionalizing firm-level capabilities to manage alliances. Third, we highlight emerging issues in the alliance context, including the need to recognize a new class of alliances between firms and not-for-profit organizations or individuals, the benefits of taking a “portfolio approach” to alliance strategy and management, and the opportunity to transfer one’s alliance capabilities to the effective management of other interfirm relationships, including acquisitions. I The Alliance Paradox n the last two decades, alliances have become a central part of most companies’ competitive and growth strategies. Alliances help firms strengthen their competitive position by enhancing market...

...edu/course/ext-23550/2012/spring Instructor: Dave Power 617.694.2472 President, Power Strategy dave@powerstrategy.com Office Hours: Before class and by appointment ------------------------------------------------- About the Course Course Description and Overview Growth companies are the engines of product innovation, market expansion and value creation. But sustaining the growth of these dynamic private companies -- typically with revenues of $10 to $100 million -- requires a unique set of skills, different from those required in either startups or large public companies. Many promising growth companies stall as their business models mature and they outgrow the processes and teams responsible for their early success. Using a mix of case studies, group discussions, interactive exercises and written assignments, this course provides a general management perspective of growth companies: strategy, execution, team, and capital. You first learn different growth strategies, including market disruption, “white space” discovery, and business model innovation. You then connect strategy with execution through market selection and positioning, “lean” development of new offers, and pipeline management. Because execution depends on team effectiveness, you explore team alignment and meeting rhythms, and the role of leadership in creating a growth culture. Finally, you learn about raising growth capital, managing boards and planning for a successful exit...

...Building on Prior Success August 25, 2013 Building on Prior Success The president of Ocper Inc. would like to add four new servers to the network for file sharing, as well as upgrade the current system to allow employees remote access. The president has asked you for your recommendations on how to make the upgrades while keeping the up-front costs to a minimum. The president wants to allow employees remote access to the network. Upgrading a NOS (Network Operating System) can be a vital piece of software to incorporate in any NOS. There will be a dramatic change to the server as well as how the NOS will function for users, and let us not forget the potential risks for users accessing the servers over the Internet. Using Windows 2003, and Windows 2008 network operating system can be implemented simply because, if any clarity and/or assistance for help is needed while making changes, calling a Microsoft technician for support is always available. The recommendation previously used a star topology with a collapsed backbone. Further research has concluded that using a serial backbone network will accommodate the upgrades that the Ocper Inc’s president wants to implement. Networking the new serial backbone in a daisy-chain fashion will allow for the many different devices to interconnect and function on the server. Quite often, “Hubs and switches are often connected in a daisy-chain to extend a network” (Dean, 2012). A serial backbone can be easily incorporated which will...

...Building on Prior Success Matthew P Bartman Strayer University Daniel Doe CIS 175 – Introduction to Networking August 25nd, 2013 Building on Prior Success I am happy to hear that you have accepted my proposal and heard that you would like to make some changes in terms of adding four servers and VPN so your can employees can work remotely. The network operating system that I would recommend using would Linux/Unix the reason being that the need for support is much lower and that if any changes need to be made they can be done quickly. Another reason that I would recommend this operating system is because it is extremely reliable and there is virtually no down time and stays up 99 percent of the time. Not only is the need for support much lower but also if there are any problems that occur they be fixed in a very short amount of time and is cheaper than windows. In terms of the how to go about adding 4 more servers to this network this is done by using the server management which would allow for the role of the server to be chosen. Higher productivity is also a benefit of this kind of networking system. The reason being that administrators tend manage more servers and also can handle very high volume workloads. One other benefit of this kind of network is that it requires minimal security 75% spend less than 10 minutes managing security and 95% managing any kind of viruses. A WAN also allows for remote connectivity which means that server can be logged onto from any...

...Case Study – Denver International Airport Baggage Handling System – An illustration of ineffectual decision making Synopsis Dysfunctional decision-making is the poison that kills technology projects and the Denver Airport Baggage System project in the 1990’s is a classic example. Although several case studies have been written about the Denver project, the following paper re-examines the case by looking at the key decisions that set the project on the path to disaster and the forces behind those decisions. Background What was to be the world’s largest automated airport baggage handling system became a classic story in how technology projects can go wrong. Faced with the need for greater airport capacity, the city of Denver elected to construct a new state of the art airport that would cement Denver’s position as an air transportation hub. Covering a land area of 140 Km2, the airport was to be the largest in the United States and have the capacity to handle more than 50m passengers annually. The airport's baggage handling system was a critical component in the plan. By automating baggage handling, aircraft turnaround time was to be reduced to as little as 30 minutes. Faster turnaround meant more efficient operations and was a cornerstone of the airports competitive advantage. Despite the good intentions the plan rapidly dissolved as underestimation of the project’s complexity resulted in snowballing problems and public humiliation for everyone involved. Thanks mainly to...
