...Paombong, Bulacan In the 16th century, the Spanish conquistadores expand their pacification drive in Luzon moving from one place to another. In 1578, they reached a large tract of land consisting of two sister towns. The newly discovered pueblo was then named Malolos. However, the Spanish friars also attended to the spiritual needs of the people living west of Malolos, which is later to be known as Paombong. This relationship continued until the early 17th century when the natives of Paombong manifested their desire to be liberated from the parochial leadership of Malolos. The Spaniards then established Paombong as a pueblo in 1619, becoming the seventh town in Bulacan founded by the Augustinian Order. From 1619 to 1650, a Spanish friar ruled Paombong, just like any other Augustinian-controlled place. Not long after, civilian rulers took over, but their reigns were dictated upon and was under the mercy of the prailles. In the middle of the 17th century, Paombong grew into a modest community from what was once a cogon land inhabited by a handful of Tagalogs. Paombong was created a municipal organization on November 28, 1650 with Agustin Mananghaya[4] as its first civilian ruler. During the Spanish regime, Paombong’s coastal area, more specifically, Barangays Masukol and Binakod, played a significant role in Philippine History being known encounter sites between Spanish soldiers and Katipuneros. General Isidoro Torres[5] used to retreat with his troops to Barangay...

...Chapter 10 SOCIO-CULTURAL EVALUATION 1. Importance of Socio-Cultural Evaluation The socio-cultural resources of Central Luzon are potential resource-assets for tourism development. These resource-assets has great tourism application that can generate community-based livelihood and employment opportunities. The sociocultural resources include the traditional communities, archaeological and historical sites, festivals, indigenous arts and crafts, cuisine, myths and legends, as well as folklores and oral history. These resource-assets represent the country's heritage that is reflective of the region's identity. Promotions of socio-cultural resources for tourism purposes will require an extensive and meticulous evaluation because of the possible "over-exposures" that these cultural assets will have to withstand. Socio-cultural evaluation identifies the tourism potentials of these resource-assets with relevance to the environmental and cultural settings of the host communities. It also identifies the existing and perceived impacts of tourism to these socio-cultural assets and to devise appropriate mitigative measures and management plans to protect and better enhance cultural heritage for tourism development. The need to promote the cultural heritage of the Central Luzon region in the tourism industry should be balanced with the need to preserve and conserve the sociocultural integrity of these resources. ...Joseph Calata Early Career Path After graduating from DLSU, Joseph joined the family business as a Clerk, J. Melvin’s, a poultry feed store in Plaridel, Bulacan. It had been incorporated under the name Planters Choice Agro Products established by his parents Eusebio and Isabel in 1978. The store was named after Joseph and his older brother Melvin. Before jumping in, Joseph observed that the business was run like a sari-sari store. The core product, animal feeds, would be weighed on the spot and handed to customers, and the money was kept in a money pot or in a drawer. J. Melvin’s had branches in Malolos, but their main markets were the farmers in Plaridel. He envisioned the backyard business as a professional corporation. He bought an accounting software that took him a year to master and tailor-fit to the store. According to Joseph Calata “It was definitely trial-and-error but I wanted to prove that it could be done with patience and determination,” he said. “I asked myself, ‘Will I end up working in this store, merely giving change for animal feed?’ I decided to professionalize it. I worked 24/7. I could not make a new transaction if the previous day’s sales had not been encoded…because I saw how things would pile up. I wanted to perfect the system. I had to know how much we made every day. Was there profit? How much?” Joseph Calata was single-minded in proving that putting a system (and a paper trail) in place was the way to go. Although recording the inventory was tedious...
