...Bullying Is a Big Deal Bullying is a big problem that affects lots of kids. Three-quarters of all kids say they have been bullied or teased. Being bullied can make kids feel really bad. The stress of dealing with bullies can make kids feel sick. Bullying can make kids not want to play outside or go to school. It's hard to keep your mind on schoolwork when you're worried about how you're going to deal with the bully near your locker. Bullying bothers everyone — and not just the kids who are getting picked on. Bullying can make school a place of fear and can lead to more violence and more stress for everyone. Why Do Bullies Act That Way? Some bullies are looking for attention. They might think bullying is a way to be popular or to get what they want. Most bullies are trying to make themselves feel more important. When they pick on someone else, it can make them feel big and powerful. Some bullies come from families where everyone is angry and shouting all the time. They may think that being angry, calling names, and pushing people around is a normal way to act. Some bullies are copying what they've seen someone else do. Some have been bullied themselves. Sometimes bullies know that what they are doing or saying hurts other people. But other bullies may not really know how hurtful their actions can be. Most bullies don't understand or care about the feelings of others. Bullies often pick on someone they think they can have power over. They might pick on kids who...

...#2 In the Unlikely Event of a Water Landing “Monkey see monkey do” this is something that has been said throughout time, though originated in Jamaica in the 18th century but is this truly what drives people to help others? After reading Opening Skinner’s Box, chapter 4 entitled, In the Unlikely Event of a Water Landing by Lauren Slater, it has come to my attention that this may be right. In that chapter Slater discussion was about Catherine Genovese gruesome murder that happen while 38 witnessed watched thru windows while Genovese was stabbed multiple times repeatedly. Then she was also raped an incident that took about 35 minutes before someone finally called the police. It has become common sense today to assume that we should feel safer in larger crowds. However, Slater writes that may not be the case. “Because response rate were so consistently tied to group size, Darley and Latane’ understood what no one else yet had: a phenomenon they call “diffusion of responsibility” (102). Here it is more than clear that this this not the case. In Darley and Latane’ theory it is safer to be with a smaller crowd who might take action quicker feeling responsible then bigger crowd who assumes someone else will step in and help. This how ever has been proved...

...Empathy Exercise Gina Krazer PSY/220 December 13, 2011 Mary Jeanell Buck Snap judgments have a negative effect of hindering one’s ability to foster empathy. Often, such judgments can prove to be incorrect about a person, if the time is taken out to get to know him/her. According to Bolt (2004, p. 51), “People are not always what they seem at first glance. This is not to say that negative judgments are always erroneous or that people never contribute to their own failure, merely that life situations are unique and shape people’s actions more than we know.” Almost every individual is guilty of making these snap judgments, including myself. However, I can only think of one person that I presently have negative feelings toward. I am not in the position to say that I know this person well either. She is a coworker of mine and one certain situation influenced my judgments about her. If I found that I was wrong, I would change my opinion and work to change the basic relationship that she and I hold. The circumstances that created this snap judgment occurred during the time I was training her to be a server. On the second day of her training, I had about three tables in a row not leave any tips. Since this does not normally happen, I had suspected that she may have taken the tips, because she was cleaning all of my tables. I had my general manager check the cameras and, as I suspected, she had taken the tips. I confronted her about it and she immediately apologized...

...Functional Analysis A functional analysis is a process of learning about people before intervening in their lives. It is a systematic process for describing difficult behavior, identifying environmental factors and setting events that predict the behavior, and guiding the development of effective and efficient behavior support plans. Three important beliefs underlying a functional analysis are that 1) all behavior that persists serves some purpose, 2) every person is unique, and 3) the best way to help someone change their behavior is to first understand the reasons behind the behavior. This worksheet includes the components of a functional analysis which should be used to develop a positive behavior support plan, if one is needed for a participant. Depending on the person, some items may not need to be addressed. |Clear Description of the Behavior -- What does the challenging behavior look like? What does it sound like? Does it occur in conjunction with other behaviors or | |in isolation? How long does it last? ...and probably always will be. My friends like me for that quality. That’s with friends though. One of my teachers this year constantly harps on my quietness. He says hi to me in the mornings, and it seems to me that he always says something like, “Why do you always sound so timid when I say hi to you? You’re not like that during class. So, why so shy now?” I’ve never legitimately answered him. But, I honestly don’t know why, because I’m only like that in school. Sure, I’m a little soft spoken, and sure I’m not the most talkative in that class, but I’m not unconfident. I’m just naturally soft spoken. I don’t normally raise my hand and blurt out answers, or go up to a teacher and have a random conversation. I don’t like talking in front of people, because I’m afraid of what they think. I’m afraid of being judged. It’s like I’m a whole other person. Frightened, and timid. On the other hand, at home I am a COMPLETELY different person. If my mom was to hear any of my teachers say, “She’s just an angel.”, or “She’s just so sweet.” .My mom probably wouldn’t believe any of them. At home I’m loud and I tend to speak my mind. Plus, my brother and I NEVER get along. I can get along with everyone else in the world but him. Something about him just sets me off. From the time I was born till about the age of five I was, in fact, a perfect little angel. After my brother had been around for a year things started...

...environment. Having many different people working together provides for many perspectives. You learn to work with people who have different views and values than yourself. In a collaborative environment you have the opportunity to discuss in detail how and why others view things the way they do. In a group people are able to speak about questions they have so they may better understand an issue or topic. Understanding where others stand on a subject gives you the opportunity to learn something new or even expand your own point of view. • How might factors such as diversity, attitude, learning, and work styles affect collaboration? In a collaborative environment factors like diversity, attitude, learning, and work style can affect the outcome of a project. People learn in many different ways and in a group you have to work together. If someone has a negative attitude it could cause problems for the group. With so many different backgrounds and race language could be a main factor for some people. ...to their work and motivator satisfaction and also the satisfaction of lower-order needs at work for some people. This model may apply in many ways for example in a working place, if a person that is every cautious about his hygiene and cleanliness is employed in a place where they have little or no hygiene tolerance this person would not be a able to function properly because of his environment and would most likely not perform as supposed in his work because they would be more focused on trying to clean and make the environment soothe them most of the time instead of carrying out their activities. Another example that this model may apply to competition in offices when workers are not satisfied with their current level at the job or their current salary they tend to have grudges against each other and this would definitely cause disarray in the office place amongst the workers, this situation occurs very often at many work places. My model would state that life changes according to the way you want it to this means that the way you act or behave towards different situations would determine how your life could change easily in certain circumstances people act differently so this can change the way people would see you because of a certain behavior or attitude. An example in which my model can be as follows, usually people think the quiet people are the weak ones and the harmless ones but it’s usually the other way around because when they get really...

...describe the feelings I feel for the people behind the shirts at the clothesline project. Especially women who are beat and abused both physically and sexually, as well as raped and manipulated. I had never heard of the clothesline project before but the more than “traumatizing” experience will leave an imprint upon my brain forever. There are two things I wish to mention at the beginning of my paper. As I was walking to the grande ballroom I was asked by a student ambassador to write something upon a wall that inspires me. I wrote “the look on a person’s face when you do something that makes their day.” And as I was walking around looking at the various t-shirts and stories the thought kept coming back: “what inspires these people to act the way they do.” I couldn’t understand why there were so many Fathers beating mothers and children, Grandfathers and uncles molesting loved ones, and so people who have been murdered. Shirt after shirt “I hate you” and “why did you do this to me” “I was only x amount years old” I was appalled. More so for the fact that these experiences are happening to us right in our neighborhoods. At the beginning I thought this was a traveling exhibit, but it is not. This is happening right in our own community, around us every day. The sad part is the fact that in a lot of cases, the victims didn’t say anything for years at a time, or due to circumstances people didn’t even believe them even police officers and people who are supposed to investigate. I...

...talk says a lot about us. Physical appearance has to do with how a person grooms himself or herself. This narrows down the clothing and accessories one wears. Although appearance should not be how we judge a person, most of us get that habit from our family. Unfortunately, the reality is that people judge others by outer appearance. As Brent Staples describes in his story, “Youngish black man-a broad six feet two inches with a beard and billowing hair, both hands shoved into the pockets of a bulky military jacket-seemed menacingly close.” (Staples 241) The woman walking by him was terrified of him. She was judging him by his appearance; by what he was wearing. Among other things, which form an individual’s appearance besides clothing is how one grooms. We have the tendency of assuming a person is a certain way because of their appearance. In comparison, how a person shaves, does their hair gives them a certain personality. Also the way they talk, move, and smile, says a lot about a person. I have worked in the banking industry for five years and have learned a few things about people. As a result, working in the banking industry you get to see and meet different type of people. There was this one older lady that every morning would stop at the bank and have a cup of our complimentary coffee. She was never groomed her outfit was not up to date with todays fashion; It was like she has just gotten out of bed. First thing that came to my mind was “poor lady she must be homeless...

...hardly move. Love energy is also like a flower. If this is always watered , put under the sunshine and cared of, the product will be an attractive, glowing, full bloom and full of life. If we view it in the opposite thing, this flower will soon withers and suddenly die. This is like those persons that think they aren’t being loved. So their energy is like the end of a music that fades away. Subliminally, we do see evidence of this love energy to a person who is in love and inspired. We can see he/she is beaming, glooming, radiant, vibrant, and of course for us he/she has an attractive smile. Thus, we see at some level, the aura – which brightens in intensity proportionate to the increase in flow of energy. Holy people, or saintly people individuals, are those who become extremely...

...Juarez Mr. Draney An expression that is widely known is not to judge a book by its cover. In relation to that, people judge and criticize the appearance and behavior of a person without knowing that person’s side of the story. Different people have been socially constructed to believe what is acceptable and what is not pertaining on how they grew up. People are judged by what they wear, and focus on what is appealing to them as an individual, as well as society. A generalization of a person, who would be considered taboo, is all black clothing, black hair, and black lipstick. A person like this would be considered: emotional, demonic, anti-social. This is the quote on quote “judging a book by its cover”. Fact could be the person is the sweetest. What prevents us from getting to know people? Why do we often automatically go for the stereotype, instead of learning something about the people we meet? What could be viewed in one culture as normal, could not be viewed in another the same, and could even be discriminated against. For example, other parts of the country wearing rings around their neck to elongate it, would show beauty. In the United States it would be considered taboo. There are many things society has considered taboo just for the fact that it is queer to them. The biggie socially constructionism would be religion. It affects the views of so many people. If a religious person, says they do not like tattoos, because god brought us onto this earth, without them, then...

...the other person will laugh or shook his head. He believes that old people are no help for him, because they’re all deaf, but drunken people are still the worst. He thinks women are more understanding and sympathetic than men. He thinks that the nameless man looks friendly and his face looks like a cherub, so he considers him as an option for help. The nameless man hates drunken people, drug addicts and girls with dirty hair. He doesn’t hate them because of their personalities, because he obviously doesn’t know them. He just hates the way they look. When he sees Berto, who is dark-skinned, at the train, he claims he’s the type that ruins London – the type that goes to discos and clubs, a drug taker and a hooligan, and he believes Berto is listening to black music. Denise immediately thinks that Berto is a rapist, when he eyes her up in the train. According to her every man could be a rapist. She considers getting a car instead of riding with the train, but then there are car thieves, crashes, men in vans swearing at you and those horrible hyenas in the TV ads. She smiles to the nameless man to see, if he was any help in case Berto would attack her. The three persons haven’t said one word to each other, although they are carrying all of these thoughts and pictures just by having looked at each other shortly.
