Working in a nursing home, like high school, one is bound to witness several types of residents or cliques because it seems as though the dining room turns into a high school cafeteria with the “assigned” seating. The loners, the drama queens, and the spoiled rich ones are typical to be found in a nursing home. However, the most well-known types of residents are the gossipers, the bullies, and the nice popular ones. The Gossipers are pretty common among the nursing home setting. The gossipers are the clique that knows everything and anything about the staff members and other residents. While sitting in the dining room they will spend the entire meal talking about various events or people. A common example is at a lunch meal; Mary, Flora, and Virginia sit together and quietly discuss among themselves how one resident on the unit is not doing well while he or she is in the hospital. …show more content…
The bullies are the ones who hit or kick staff members while administering care to or get in verbal altercations with other residents if their day is not going how they were to see fit. When a staff member is administering care to a resident and the resident hits the staff member in the face or sitting at a meal another resident might say something to that resident and he or she lashes out it a verbal fit. A classic example of a bully is when Paige, the staff member, is getting Betty, the resident, dressed for the day. Betty is very agitated and swinging her fists every time Paige puts an article of clothing on and when Betty stands up and Paige leans down to pull up Betty’s pants, Betty strikes Paige in the head. And while Betty is still agitated from the rough get up she had (rough on her part, not the staff member) Betty sees another Doris in the hall and calls her an inappropriate name just for being in the hall.
