Bullying can happen to any child ranging in ages from children in kindergarten all the way to seniors in high school, and can be done physically, emotionally, verbally. Bullying is not only limited to schools, it can also be done in the child’s home and where the child works. Studying the issue of bullying and how it affects human development is extremely important. It is also important to gain an understanding of the child’s life to understand why it is that he or she is bullying. Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) reports that “studies suggest that kids who bully are more than likely to have been raised in a home where physical punishment is used as discipline” (n.d.). Learning which factors influence an individual to become a bully will allow the appropriate treatment to be administered to help the individual. Bullying not only hurts a person physically, mentally, and emotionally; it can also result in devastating consequences. Individuals who are being bullied have more negative health indicators that include violent behavior, depression and risk of suicide, physical health problems, poorer quality of life, delinquency, school and psycho-social maladjustment, and risk of future psychiatric problems and disorders than can possibly follow them into...

...Dealing With Bullying by: Shaun Black May 1, 2014 BSHS/325 Stephanie Munro Hello my name is Shaun Black, I will be addressing the dangers of bullying in this report. I will be explaining the following topics: why bullying is an issue to study in human development, the three components or types of bullying behavior, as observed by researchers, how gender and sexual orientation influence styles of bullying, how self-esteem affects bullying, and how family interactions are affected by bullying. Why is bullying such an issue in the study of human development? The growing interest in bullying over the past decade hasn't been without just cause, as a saddening number of school shootings, student suicides, and other tragic incidents have demonstrated the heartbreaking consequences of unchecked bullying. As a result, schools have been taking a hard line on students accused of bullying, parents are speaking out, and the issue has become the rallying point for a number new anti-bullying organizations. Yet while bullying is doubtless a major problem and one that should be addressed with the utmost seriousness, the reality is that many who are speaking out against it and proposing legislation on it really know little about the psychological and sociological research that has been done on the subject. While some stereotypes about bullies and their victims have proven true, other studies demonstrate that a more measured approach to bullying may be more effective than current...

Victims of Bullying, Mental Health, and Nursing

...Paper 3 - Victims of Bullying, Mental Health, and Nursing Victims of bullying are at a high risk of developing various types of mental illnesses, and the evidence on this topic in the research literature can be used to inform psychiatric nursing practice. The available studies on mental health and its connection to bullying victims shows that preventing mental illness and promoting mental health involves a comprehensive approach, using combination of techniques that must be implemented by many stakeholders. The information that comes from these studies suggests that psychiatric nursing must take research findings into account. It also suggests that nurses have a definite role to play in terms of providing direct patient care, referring the patient to other helpful medical and community resources, offering education to the patient and family, and providing follow-up care. Specific interventions based on this evidence could also be adopted by Registered Nurses (RNs) after they graduate. Literature Review There is a wealth of literature available on the subject of bullying. This literature demonstrates that there is a clear link between bullying victimization and many types of mental health issues. However, it also suggests ways that mental health could be promoted among this population, and how rehabilitation could be administered. Studies have shown that bullying victims are at a higher risk for certain types of mental illness, and that issues of symptom severity, compared...

Bullying in Schools

...Bullying in Schools Patrick J. Mullan Empire State College Bullying in Schools There are times in one’s life when something so deeply touches us that we have to stop what we are doing and either blink, smile or cry. For me, such a moment occurred on January 3, 2013 when I read in The Staten Island Advance that a 15 year old girl threw herself in front of a bus while carrying a suicide note in her pocket. This young lady had lived close to my home in Staten Island. Her name was Amanda Cummings, a high school student and a very attractive young woman. It was revealed that she was the victim of bullying both at school. She was also bullied on her cell phone and on the internet when she was at home. Apparently there was some romantic imbroglio over a boy that triggered a group of teenagers to target Amanda with relentless bullying. The young Romeo was 19 years old and apparently he was also involved with the ringleader of the bullies. The gang of bullies urged Amanda to kill herself on numerous occasions. The 19 year old male eventually broke up with Amanda, but the bullying did not cease. Faced with non-ending bullying and the loss of the boy, Amanda felt that she had no choice but to end her short life. In the days that followed Amanda’s death, students at her school posted the vilest messages on her Facebook page and continued their bullying even after she was dead. They expressed happiness over her decision to die and ridiculed her. Not everyone on Facebook was abominable...
