Bullying Training

According to Jacobsen and Bauman (2007) “School bullying was once considered a childhood ritual or rite of passage and therefore, often overlooked or ignored by many adults and school officials.” For a behavior to be considered bullying, it must contain three elements. It must be intended to harm, it must be repetitive, and there must be a difference of power-physical, social or other and must exist between the bully and the victim. Jacobsen and Bauman (2007) Bullying doesn’t discriminate. Bully’s like to abuse their power and pick on those who appear weak. They like to take control and make the victim feel like they have no identity. They like to make their victim feel small. There are three different types of bullying; verbal, physical and relational. Physical and verbal fall into direct bullying. This means it is directly at the victim. Verbal bullying happens quite a bit. It is often delivered in the form of name-calling, teasing, and other various verbal threats. Physical bullying is most often pushing, hitting and kicking the victim. This kind of bullying can be very dangerous. Indirect bullying involves relational bullying. Relational bullying is one of the worst forms of bullying. This type of bullying is through gossiping, rumors and making up stories about the victim. You can't tell if the bully is being serious or not. Usually, the victim tries to gain acceptance, but to no avail. They keep getting rejected. Girls are usually the worst with this type of bullying. Cyber-bullying is another form of indirect bullying and it is the most prominent that the most people can see. ...Stopping Bullying Jessica Messer DeVry University Stopping Bullying Rachael, a seventeen year old high school student from Kentucky just wanted a regular high school experience just like everyone else gets. She wanted to be able to go to classes, dances, and the prom without having to look over her shoulder for someone stalking her and might even be trying to kill her. The great high school experience did not happen for her because she started getting harassing and threatening e-mails on her MySpace account. The e-mails consist of her activities during school hours and after school so she knew it was someone at her school. Her parents went to the principal with the problem, but the school did nothing about it. She received an e-mail stating, “I am not going to put you in the hospital; I am going to put you in the morgue.” After receiving this e-mail she committed suicide on October 9, 2006. Many of the children that take their own lives have bullies that don’t understand that their “words hurt”. (Neblett, 2010). Rachael was not the only life that was lost in that year. She had two friends Kristin Settles, (Settles, 2010) and Karissa Smith, (Smith, 2010) that took their own lives after Rachael did. Yet, around 160,000 children in the United States alone miss school because of bullying (Phoenix & Honda, “Our children Faces a Bullying Epidemic”). Since most bullying takes place at school, it is imperative that these schools take actions by implementing anti-bullying policies into their school code of conduct. The schools are primarily responsible for reducing bullying among students and must seek effective solutions to this growing problem. Bullying would not be such a huge problem if school officials stepped up and started intervening. But how can they intervene when many cannot even recognize signs of bullying, or have not been trained on how to properly handle the situation? If not handled correctly, it can worsen and create more issues for the victims.
