Bump in the Night: The Vampire Bat

Authors Note
This essay of a memoir has been submitted on April 7, 2013

Oh my god! This did not just happen to me. I find myself locked outside of my apartment with just my underoos on. I'm around eleven or years old at this time in my life. My mom and I have been in our apartment for about a year or two at this point so know my neighbors petty well by now. I had just moved to Maryland from Savannah, GA a few years ago. I'm slowly adjusting to being a latch key kid because my mother was a corrections officer and worked odd shifts sometime early morning or the midnight shift. I have two older brothers Mike who is the oldest at 7 years older than me and Toby who is 6 years older than me. They are not living with us at this time. My mom has been working these odd shifts for a year or so at this time so I was used to being home alone. There were rules I had to follow to keep myself safe. I'm pretty sure all latch key kids parents made them live by these rules as well. Never open the door from anyone but my mom or my brothers unless given direct instructions from either one of them. Don't give the impression that I might be home alone. Sometimes I would leave the television on or radio in the living room to give the illusion that there is some activity going on inside our apartment. This being home alone at night had become standard operating procedure at this point. There were just a few things that really bothered me when she would leave for work or get ready to leave. When there would be storm such as thunder and lightning storms, they always seem to formulate or start moving through my area just as my mom was getting ready for work. So this mean I literally had to weather the storm. My brothers were out on their own having their own places. They would come by from time to time to check on me or is they were on our side of town they would just come stay at our house. I would storm pretty badly sometimes and I would tell my brother to come by and keep me company on certain occasions. This was always a good thing for my mom because she always knew they would check in on me from time to time and she would feel a little less worried about me. I was a pretty self sufficient kid. I knew how to take care of myself pretty well at this point. I never cried wolf or raised false alarms about anything so if I had to call my mom at work it was something pretty important. I'm either injured or there is something serious going on where I have to reach out to her. Here is where it becomes interesting. One night my mom is getting ready for work and it's a stormy night as usual. I'm always a little uneasy but not too rattled. I'm in bed and I get a call from my brother Toby. By this time it's about midnight or just past. He tells me the he was on his way to the house and he didn't have his key so he wanted me to open the door for him. I'm thinking nothing of it; I get up and head toward the front door to take the lock off. As I'm walking toward the door I hear this strange sound like air being moved but I'm assuming it's just the wind and didn't worry too much about it. I see a shadow moving out of the corner of my eye. Now I've seen when a mouth or something flies past the lamp or something it give the illusion that there is a moving shadow. When I turned to look I saw nothing so I proceeded to unlock the door. Our door had to be opened to remove the auto lock. I opened the door clicked the switch and thought I was headed back to my room. I turned around and was immediately confronted by a bat. I was flying toward me and all around my living room. I was scared to death! My first reaction was to get away from it and the only way to go was out the front door. Not only did I not unlock the door but I locked myself of it and now I'm standing in the hallway of my building with just my underoos on. I'm so embarrassed having to knock on my neighbor door at this time of night in my underoos. She felt so bad for me. I was like a scared dog with his tail between his legs. I'm called my mom at work and she was pretty upset because she thought I was making this all up because I was scared to be in the house alone. About a half hour later my mother arrives and she is angry. She swears that there is no bat in the house. My mom goes in to get me some pants to put on while she investigates the scene. My brother arrives looking pretty confused as to why my mom is home upon his arrival and she proceeds to tell him that I was scared to be home by myself and that I made up this whole bat thing to get her to come home. How wrong she was, she went into her room and turned on the light. I never heard my mom scream so loud and move so fast. That bat made a believer out of her yet. She pushes my brother in the house in closed him in with the bat. She told him he couldn't come out unless he had that bat with him. I've never felt so right or so pleasured to prove my mom wrong. Looks like I'm not the only one scared to be home at this point. So, the next time your child or sibling tells you they hear a bump in the night. Don't write them off as just being spooky or scared. They say believe none of what you hear and half of what you see. With that being said, seeing in believing. That shadow you see out the corner of your eye could really be something and you just don't know it yet. We still to this day try to figure out how the bat got into the apartment. There are many versions to who or how but no one will take the blame. This vampire bat remains a mystery. Today I have a whole new respect for bats. Even thought the bat was the only one harmed I never want to encounter one of them ever again. In conclusion to this story I would like to add that pajama bottoms are a requirement these days because you never know when you might have to make a speedy exit.

...The Creepy Night By Bling Dog The night was cold and windy. The moon was a full moon tonight. The trees looked haunted and scary with their big shadows. The sky was completely pitch black. There was a haunted house. It had a purplish-blackish roof. The house was painted completely pitch black. The door was an indigo color. The lights were out, but the chimney was puffing out black puffy smoke. On the roof there were some very scary looking bats. They even looked real. On the front door there was a skeleton, and it kept on repeating, "Don't enter! Save Your Soul!" There were vines and plants growing over the haunted house. On a windowsill there was even a fake Chucky. When I started walking up to the door I felt like I was going to explode! I was so freaked out. I started sweating and started to shake. I was there, all alone. I wanted to scream, but it wouldn't come out. I was getting more freaked out by every step. I actually felt like I should turn back and run. But, the haunted house made me feel sort of drawn to it. A bat flew overhead and shrieked "eek!" I went to the doorknob and reached for it. It felt slimy and gooey. I looked and saw it had red stuff on it. I took the red stuff off my hand and then the doorknob. I felt the doorknob and it felt like soft wood. It was a dark maroon color and looked big compared to my little hand. When I opened the door it creaked louder and louder until I finally opened it the whole way. In the inside I smelled something burning...

Hamilton, 1997 Anita Blake, vampire hunter, is now herself a hunted woman. Who put the $500,000 price on her head--a man or a monster? It's not just her own skin she needs to save; the rivalry between her werewolf boyfriend, Richard, and Marcus, the other alpha werewolf in his pack, has come to full boil. And there's always Jean-Claude, the vampire who's been waiting for just the right moment to slip inside Anita's head and heart. 1 The most beautiful corpse I'd ever seen was sitting behind my desk. Jean-Claude's white shirt gleamed in the light from the desk lamp. A froth of lace spilled down the front, peeking from inside his black velvet jacket. I stood behind him, my back to the wall, arms crossed over my stomach, which put my right hand comfortably close to the Browning Hi-Power in its shoulder holster. I wasn't about to draw on Jean-Claude. It was the other vampire I was worried about. The desk lamp was the only light in the room. The vampire had requested the overheads be turned out. His name was Sabin, and he stood against the far wall, huddling in the dark. He was covered head to foot in a black, hooded cape. He looked like something out of an old Vincent Price movie. I'd never seen a real vampire dress like that. The last member of our happy little group was Dominic Dumare. He sat in one of the client chairs. He was...

New Moon

...New Moon By Stephenie Meyer Summary When the Cullens, including her beloved Edward, leave Forks rather than risk revealing that they are vampires, it is almost too much for eighteen-year-old Bella to bear, but she finds solace in her friend Jacob until he is drawn into a cult and changes in terrible ways For my dad, Stephen Morgan— No one has ever been given more loving and unconditional support than I have been given by you. I love you, too. These violent delights have violent ends And in their triumph die, like fire and powder, Which, as they kiss, consume. Romeo and Juliet, Act II, Scene VI PREFACE I FELT LIKE I WAS TRAPPED IN ONE OF THOSE TERRIFYING nightmares, the one where you have to run, run till your lungs burst, but you can't make your body move fast enough. My legs seemed to move slower and slower as I fought my way through the callous crowd, but the hands on the huge clock tower didn't slow. With relentless, uncaring force, they turned inexorably toward the end—the end of everything. But this was no dream, and, unlike the nightmare, I wasn't running for my life; I was racing to save something infinitely more precious. My own life meant little to me today. Alice had said there was a good chance we would both die here. Perhaps the outcome would be different if she weren't trapped by the brilliant sunlight; only I was free to run across this bright, crowded square. And I couldn't run fast enough. So it didn't matter to me that we were surrounded...

Twilight

...Stephanie Meyer. — 1st ed. Summary: Grade 9 Up–Headstrong, sun-loving, 17-year-old Bella declines her mom's invitation to move to Florida, and instead reluctantly opts to move to her dad's cabin in the dreary, rainy town of Forks, WA. She becomes intrigued with Edward Cullen, a distant, stylish, and disarmingly handsome senior, who is also a vampire. When he reveals that his specific clan hunts wildlife instead of humans, Bella deduces that she is safe from his blood-sucking instincts and therefore free to fall hopelessly in love with him. The feeling is mutual, and the resulting volatile romance smolders as they attempt to hide Edward's identity from her family and the rest of the school. Meyer adds an eerie new twist to the mismatched, star-crossed lovers theme: predator falls for prey, human falls for vampire. This tension strips away any pretense readers may have about the everyday teen romance novel, and kissing, touching, and talking take on an entirely new meaning when one small mistake could be life-threatening. Bella and Edward's struggle to make their relationship work becomes a struggle for survival, especially when vampires from an outside clan...

Why We Broke Up

...Begin Reading Table of Contents Copyright Page For Charlotte—why we got together —D.H. + M.K. In a sec you’ll hear a thunk. At your front door, the one nobody uses. It’ll rattle the hinges a bit when it lands, because it’s so weighty and important, a little jangle along with the thunk, and Joan will look up from whatever she’s cooking. She will look down in her saucepan, worried that if she goes to see what it is it’ll boil over. I can see her frown in the reflection of the bubbly sauce or whatnot. But she’ll go, she’ll go and see. You won’t, Ed. You wouldn’t. You’re upstairs probably, sweaty and alone. You should be taking a shower, but you’re heartbroken on the bed, I hope, so it’s your sister, Joan, who will open the door even though the thunk’s for you. You won’t even know or hear what’s being dumped at your door. You won’t even know why it even happened. It’s a beautiful day, sunny and whatnot. The sort of day when you think everything will be all right, etc. Not the right day for this, not for us, who went out when it rains, from October 5 until November 12. But it’s December now, and the sky is bright, and it’s clear to me. I’m telling you why we broke up, Ed. I’m writing it in this letter, the whole truth of why it happened. And the truth is that I goddamn loved you so much. The thunk is the box, Ed. This is what I am leaving you. I found it down in the basement, just grabbed the box when all of our things were too much for my bed stand drawer. Plus I thought...
