...Assignment 1: Identify Your Competitive Advantage Aaron M. Massey Professor Jackson BUS100 26OCT2013 During the course of this paper it is my intent to analyze the strength and weaknesses of Chipotle Mexican Grill in hopes of finding a way that the restaurant chain could boost profit and/or productivity. Chipotle Mexican Grill has many things going for them and against them since opening in 1993 (Wikipedia, 2013). To start with let’s talk about their weaknesses or things they could do better. They don’t seem to be very creative in making new products, they don’t have much of a kids menu, and they’re not that global (Wikiswot). Creating new items isn’t always a make or break thing, but they could still try some new things out every once in awhile. The kids menu is pretty weak and limited 2 soft or crispy taco’s, but not allowed to have 1 of each, three ingredients to include one meat or guacamole, really? (Chipotle, 2013). They are kids, small people; it would not kill Chipotle’s bottom line to let the kids actually pick anything they want, limiting to three items (kids’ servings). Yes, they have a few places outside of the US (France, Germany & UK), but not many, they really could try to expand more to other places like around the Asian/eastern Asia countries (Wikipedia, 2013). Enough of the bad stuff and onto the strengths of Chipotle include low prices, loyal customers, financially strong/stable, they use “green”...

...ASSIGNMENT #1 2 Question #1 - Given the business situation for Spectrum Brand. Explain. Spectrum Brands, the former Rayovac Corporation, went on a radical business transformation under David Jones’ management. According to Dictionary.com, to transform means to: “change in condition, nature, or character;; convert” (“Transform,” 2011, para. 2). The company that used to produce only batteries ventured into new businesses and currently operates in the market of pet products, personal grooming, and lawn and garden care (“The Buyout Boom,” 2007). The diversification of products certainly required a new organization structure, which should be based on a matrix structure, or a multidivisional structure; since line, and line-and-staff structures would not be appropriate anymore for the required dynamic of the new company. It has been discovered that “[a]s companies grow and diversify, traditional line structures become difficult to coordinate, making communication difficult and decision making slow” (Ferrel, Hirt & Ferrel, 2009, p 247). Remember, you never end a paragraph with a quote. In a multidivisional structure, the company is organized in divisions, which are large groups that might be formed on the geography, product or customer basis; and within those divisions there may be departments also organized by customer, products, regions or a combination of those groups. This structure enables the decision process to be faster, since the managers...

...Business Environment 2012 JESSICA SEELEY BUS100 Week 4 Assignment 1: The Business Environment Prof. James 8/1/2012 . Business plays a large role in the economy, without business there would be no economy. Economy is defined as “a financial and social system of how resources flow through society, from production, to distribution, to consumption” ( McGowan, 2012, pg 17). By definition business is “any activity that provides goods and services in an effort to earn a profit” (McGowan, 2012, pg 3).Those profits allow businesses to innovate or offer more goods and services, which will consequently result in improving people’s lives. Businesses also play a significant role in the economy by creating wealth, employment and private enterprise. Businesses build wealth that gets redistributed throughout an economy, if businesses start to fail so will the economy that they are in. “The Factors of production is an economic term to describe the inputs that are used in the production of goods or services in the attempt to make an economic profit. The factors of production include land, labor, capital and entrepreneurship.” (Investopedia.com, definition) All four factors of production are important to the production of goods. Natural recourses, or land, provide the raw materials that make up the goods. Human resources, or Labor, do the hands-on work. Capital refers to the tools that make the job easier. And entrepreneurship organizes the entire development. A number of factors...

...BUS100 Assignment 1: The Business Environment Chad McCarl Professor Keisha A. Nelson July 12, 2012 Business in the economy Without business, we have no economy. People are able to consume and enjoy far more goods and services than they otherwise could if individuals were required to produce everything for themselves. People consume food that is grown by farmers or manufacturers. In many cases, the food is prepared by a restaurant as well. Very few people still sew their own clothing. They buy their wardrobes from department stores which carry clothing from large manufacturers. Your car, MP3 player, computer, and cell phone were produced by someone else. Our business based economy is responsible for of all the incredible technologies that people have access to today. Businesses bring people, equipment, and other resources together and coordinate the production of goods and services. Then the sell their goods and services on the open market for a profit. This exchange of currency, as trade, for the goods and services created fuels our economy. The employees, owners and investors of a business earn income for their services performed and then are able to use their incomes to buy the goods and services created by others. For-profit and nonprofit businesses and the economy Both for-profit and nonprofit businesses play an important role in our economy. For-profit organization is the Internal Revenue...

...The Business Environment Monica Thompson Prof Marilyn Fitzpatrick BUS 100 May 6, 2013 Author Note This report is written and submitted as an assignment for BUS100 (Intro to Business) class by Professor Marilyn Fitzpatrick in the spring semester of 2013 Abstract Business is any activity that provides goods and services in an effort to earn a profit. This paper will discuss the role business and the different affects business has on society today. The roles of for-profit and nonprofit organizations will be compared and contrasted. This paper examines the impact of the current fiscal and monetary policies on the economy. A selected product or service will have a strategy for accessing global markets outlined. In the world of business, there are certain constants that exist throughout. One the most important factors being the overall environment itself. The term Business Environment is pretty self-explanatory, and means exactly what it sounds like. The Business Environment is simply a set of different conditions and variable that dictates the nature of the current business environment. The role of business becomes an important factor in determining the flow of this current environment. Business, whether it is large or small scale, is the heartbeat of any economy. Companies that primarily focus on profit margins and financial rewards differ from those that business models consist of mission statements usually geared toward promoting the “greater good”. For-profit...

...Assignment 1 Essay Effectiveness in Business Introduction to Business BUS100 What does it mean to be effective? How is an individual considered to be effective? Some may say that the clothes you wear make you effective or the car you drive. Yes, these may be considered aspects of being effective but there is more to it than meets the eye. Having all the tangible assets in the world does not necessarily define an individual’s effectiveness or success. Rather, it is the process of setting and achieving goals that is the true measure of effective. Once goals are set, the destination where effective will be found is then determined. When an individual arrives at their destination, it is here they will find happiness, satisfaction and stability in their life. In order to arrive at the destination it is vital to set attainable goals, seize opportunities, to focus on positivity and to put forth all your effort in the pursuit. Effective business people such as Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, have similar ideals in finding effective in life. He is one of the most effective entrepreneurs of our time and it did not happen by mistake. I believe that effective in all aspects of life, whether it is personal, academic or in business, is defined by achieving goals and in doing so, stability and happiness will be attained. The most important aspect of attaining any goal is to set one. Without setting...
