Chapter 1 Homework

Review Questions 1. What factors contribute to the rapid pace of change in business? Is the pace likely to accelerate or decrease over the next decade? Why?
Increasing entrepreneurship, taking risks, and understanding the market are three factors that contribute to the rapid pace of change in business. In future decades, I feel that the pace is likely to continue to increase with advanced technology and better understanding of the market and overall world of business. 2. What role does entrepreneurship play in the economy? Who stands to gain from the success of individual entrepreneurs? How do other parties benefit?
A successful entrepreneur can enrich and benefit a multitude of various people and places. Although the actual entrepreneur is ideally the main person that makes a gain from the product or company, they also lead to sharing the wealth by spending their money. Everywhere that the businessperson spends money is making a gain due to his/her initial wealth and success. This spending of money in other businesses and the taxes can greatly stimulate an economy. 3. How do nonprofit organizations compare to businesses? What role do nonprofits play in the economy? How do they interact with businesses?
Nonprofit organizations are very much like a regular business. The only main difference is that nonprofits are not concerned with profits, like businesses are. 4. What are the factors of production? How can economies grow when one or more of the factors is weak?
The factors of production are natural resources, capital, human resources, and entrepreneurship. An economy needs all four of these factors to prosper to the best of their ability. However, in some areas all factors may not be as readily available. The country must attempt to grow with their other factors in order to continue to be successful. 5. How has the rise of the World Wide Web changed business practices? What are the benefits and drawbacks for business? For consumers?
The World Wide Web completely changed the business world and its practices. The Web has bridged the distance gap between companies and consumers all over the world. Web conferences and emails allow for instant responses. This can benefit businesses by having a broader audience to purchase products with online sales, communicating with other branches of the company more easily, and less expense than having an actual store to maintain. However, an online business requires a lot of upkeep time with orders and shipping, and it is extremely less personal for owners and consumers. Customers are not able to browse inside a store for the products, but they can easily shop from the comfort of their own house without the hassle of driving or dealing with potential crowds and other factors. 6. How has the definition of diversity changed over time? Can a diverse workforce help a company compete more effectively? How?
The idea and view of diversity has greatly changed over time. It was merely a mix of the different cultures and races that resided in an area. In today’s world, there are many more elements that create diversity. Age, gender, religion, sexuality and nationality are all factors that make people different. As for the workforce, I feel that diversity can help a company better compete with other businesses. It allows the company to appeal to a wider spectrum of possible consumers from various backgrounds.

7. How has the global free trade movement impacted business? Who benefits? Why? Who loses? Why?
The global free trade has encouraged businesses to trade goods worldwide. Consumers can benefit from the lower prices and better quality of a highly competitive market. Producers benefit from the reduced trade restrictions and tariffs. However, with such international competition for goods, smaller individual companies lose when faced with large corporate chains that dominate.

BUSA 305: The Most Important Things I Learned In Business

...The most important thing I have learned in BUSA 305 comes from the ethics project. I feel like I learned plenty of marketing tools such as the types of personal selling, the diversification model, and the consumer decision-making process. I feel as though these tools will be useful during my life whether I end up being an entrepreneur, a salesman, or a consumer, but I think the best thing I learned happened while doing my ethics project on Volkswagen. The main thing I took away from this project was how to properly analyze an ethical scandal by making my own assumptions about the brand. Prior to this project I had only heard bits and pieces of the Volkswagen scandal, and thought nothing of it. I assumed that everyone does bad things so...

Micheal Phelps

...Abram Sheets Mitchell BUSA 3280 3 April 2016 1.) "Michael Phelps is leaving Beijing as a global sports icon. He's now with the likes of the Michael Jordans, Tiger Woods and Roger Federers and he's earned every bit to be in that elite company," said Michael Lynch, head of global sponsorship at Visa. Phelps first got to be marketable in the wake of winning six golds at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Be that as it may, his prosperity at the 2008 Olympics has placed him in a different level, with a record 14 golds to his name, and on track to end up the wealthiest swimmer ever. "This absolutely changes the game. The values will change, the depth of the programs he is involved with will change, the breadth of these programs will change," said Phelps's agent, Peter Carlisle. As Phelps won gold after gold at Beijing, his allure took off and TV gatherings of people in the United states, the world's greatest media market, watched his triumphs in record numbers. 2.) Morals assumes a part in quality creation and says a great deal in regards to an association. Exploitative conduct or the backing of untrustworthy conduct can spread all through an organization. On the off chance that Kellogg's had kept on embracing Michael Phelps after those pictures were distributed, then Kellogg's image might have been one of a firm that backings the utilization of illicit substances, and that would possibly have harmed interior and outside partners' image. 3.) Not to put all of the cards on...

Paper

...Hiren Patel August 25, 2015 Dr. White BUSA 3000 Converting I have had numerous experiences converting weights and measurements all across the world, but one memorable experience I had was in India. Where I was trying to convert kilometer to miles. The summer of 2013, the year after I had graduated my parents had planned a trip to India. We arrived in India and most of the people in India use kilometers instead of miles. When we landed I asked the taxi driver “how far will it take us to get to our village” he told us, but one hundred kilometers. I tried to convert over, but my dad had already converted it over. He told us one hour and he was right. My memorable experience was when I went to visit my grandparents’ home. We had rented a car from a local dealership. My parents were already there and I was only at our house in another city. There was quarter tank of gas. In India almost anyone can drive. I got into the driver seat and proceed with the route the GPS has told me it’s about 50 kilometers. As I was driving, more than halfway there the gas light had lighted up. The rental car that we had was newer and he told me I had about ten miles to the end of the tank. The GPS said I had 15 kilometers left. Therefore, I had converted it over, so that I would not empty the tank. I pulled over and I grabbed my phone and got the conversion. Luckily, I had a pen and a paper that I took from my wallet. My final calculation was that I would be unable to reach my designation with...

Panasonic Case

...Albrena Jelks January 28, 2015 BUSA 3145 Panasonic Case 1. Triggers of cultural change in Japan during the 1990s were that the generation born after 1964 lacked the same commitment to traditional Japanese values as their parents. They grew up in a richer world where Western ideas and traditions were embraced which resulted in them resisting values passed on from their parents. They did not want to be tied to a company for life to be a salary man, they wanted greater possibilities and freedom like the Western countries had. 2. Since the younger workers are resisting lifetime employment and are pushing for more freedom businesses probably won’t have as many consistent workers in the future like normally. Changes for the economy will be more westernized which may result in more competition and higher wages. 3. Traditional Japanese culture benefited from Panasonic from the 1950s-1960s by being provided with housing, discounts on amenities and guaranteed retirement bonuses, employees were truly cared for from the “cradle to the grave” as stated in the case in exchange for loyalty and hard work. I think that the traditional value did become more of a liability during the 1990s and early 2000s because everyone who was working was old and only getting older. When you get to a certain age you began to lack the ability to perform your job efficiently which wasn’t an issue with the younger workers who weren’t so focused on pay and the older ones who could demand a raise...

For this Warner began to receive many calls from spectators complaining and threatened that they will switch cable companies’ providers. Time Warner is the second largest cable provider in the United State with approximately 13.3 million subscribers. Viacom is one of the largest providers of cable TV channel programming. The channel arrangement between Viacom and Time Warner is one of dual distribution in that they both offer the same product to consumers. Viacom owns the channels that people were viewing and Time Warner was supplying the consumers with those channels on another cable provider. The intermediaries are the stations that they offer the service and the people doing the negotiations to keep the channels at Time Warner and get Viacom a little more money. The channel conflict is that of a vertical conflict, since Time Warner is below Viacom in this and Viacom has sway over what happens to them. However in this case, Time Warner was able to regain the upper hand by reaching out to its consumers, hoping they made up for what the company itself could not threaten. Therefore, Viacom wanted more money to supply the channels that had millions of viewers, and...
