...Porters 5 forces that was developed by Michael Porter in 1979 focuses on 5 main factors that can help the FMCG companies and determine the industry that a company wants to join or enter into. The Porters 5 forces will show if it is profitable for a company to enter the market based in the 5 criteria’s. Porter’s main plan was to understand the forces and the underlying causes that reveals the basis or foundation in an industry’s profitability while allowing to identify the current and the future incoming competition (Arline, 2015). According to Michael E. Porter the origin of profitability will not change regardless of the type of the industry that a company will operate in. But what will drive competition and the profit making ability will be structure of the industry, and not the fact that the industry is producing goods or services, is developing or matured in the market. Porters 5 Forces Model Source: (Masonmyers.com, 2016) Applying the porter’s five forces into Fmcg companies. Threat of new entrants. Coca cola is a well-known beverage company that falls into the FMCG category. They aren’t just a company but also hold a very strong brand name. Coca cola faces a medium risk of new entrants. They reap economies of scale and thus enjoy very low average cost making it hard for new entrants to enter the beverage market. And also the fact that Coca cola has been operating in the market for a very long time, their products are popular around the world in almost every country...

...Luke Singer Megan Peters English 111 10/7/12 You’re My God Damn Hero http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-XWhH2VSXk There may not be a better ending to a movie that has been released in the last ten years. The ending of Taking of Pelham 123 includes a face-off between good and bad, with guns drawn, and both men up against a wall, creating a dramatic and suspenseful ending to a fantastic movie. As if the film did not have enough action in it, the last scene alone can provide enough white knuckles in the audience to fulfill any demands from the public audience. However, before anyone thinks that this sort of ending just “happens” without a lot of thought and attention to detail, think again. The director, Tony Scott, created the perfect concoction in the last scene to produce something that was unforgettable and that left the audience with a good taste in their mouth as they finished the movie. Through years of directing, this may come more easily to Scott, but the untrained eye would have no idea where to start if they were to put together this last scene. Many factors are working together here that need to be broken down to experience the full effects of what is going on. The multiple forms of rhetoric, with addition to other factors such as camera angles, target audience, and word choice, built a scene that can be analyzed from the inside out. The use of rhetoric here is different than how it may be used in a commercial. Instead of persuading someone to purchase...

...JAPAN AIRLINES FLIGHT 123 Aviation accident is defined by events associated with an aircraft that has the risk of affecting the safety of operations which takes place between the time any person boards the aircraft with the intention of flight until such time as the passengers have disembarked, in which a person is fatally or seriously injured, the aircraft sustains damage or structural failure or the aircraft is missing or is completely inaccessible. An accident in which the damage to the aircraft is such that it must be written off, or in which the plane is destroyed is called a hull loss accident. Over the years, there are many aircraft accidents but there are a few major accidents such as the September 11 crash at the World Trade Center in New York in 2001, the Tenerife airport disaster in 1977 which is recorded as the highest death toll, the Japan Airlines Flight 123 in 1985 and others. Until today, the Japan Airlines Flight 123 in 1985 is the single-aircraft disaster with the highest number of fatalities. In this crash, all 15 crew members, 505 out of 509 passengers died and resulting in a total of 520 deaths on board a Boeing 747. The aircraft suffered an explosive decompression from an incorrectly repaired doubler plates causing the aft pressure bulkhead to fail, which failed in mid flight and destroyed most of its vertical stabilizer, and severed all of the hydraulic lines, making the 747 paralyzed and uncontrollable. The pilots were able to keep the plane flying...

...achieve success initially due to many initiatives set up to promote aeronautic research by the government. Of particular importance is the subsidies received by Embraer, which helped it to achieve the majority market share in the commuter turboprop market with its ‘Bandeirante’ aircraft. The subsidies were believed to be in the region of 39-44% as claimed by their competitor Fairchild, which undoubtedly played a huge role in their early success. However, Embraer began to falter when a series of negative events began to hurt its profits when budgetary pressures as a result of macroeconomic difficulty in Brazil meant that they could no longer depend on subsidies to help boost sales. In addition, their political ties led to the development of CBA 123, which ultimately turned out to be a huge failure. To help examine Embraer’s post-privatisation success, we can use an adapted version of ‘The Four-Tiered Structure of Markets’ found in Khanna & Palepu (2006). In this adapted version of the regional aircraft manufacturing industry (Apendix 1), there are only three tiers namely Global, Glocal and Local. In the early stages of Embraer’s operations, they were arguably operating in the Local tier of the industry. As a state-owned initiative, their primary purpose was to serve the local Brazilian market. Around 1981, Embraer began moving up into the Glocal Tier as it set up a subsidiary to focus on its exports to the U.S. as Embraer became the market leader in the...

...Strategic Management and Strategic Competitiveness Assignment 1 Executive summary The Kenya Broadcasting Cooperation is a state cooperation in Kenya which was established by the act of parliament in 1961 and named as Voice of Kenya and later Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) in 1964 by another act of parliament .One of the core objectives of the corporation was to offer radio and television communication services to the nation and was the main media house that the government used to convey official information to the nation. This included informing the public of the government developmental strategies so that the entire nation could back up the government to achieve its goals (Godard, 123-167). For a long time, the cooperation enjoyed state protection against competition until recent when the government finally lifted the barriers in the communication industry. Today, the main challenge facing the Kenya Broadcasting Cooperation is serious competition from other upcoming media houses such as Citizen Radio and Television, provided by the Royal Media Services and owned by a private investor called S.K Masharia. Since the corporation is owned and financed by the central government, it has been at a stable position in the competitive market due to the low quality services offered since it was not motivated by making profit. Today, the corporation has lost many customers to other media house and still faces a bevy of challenges such as workers strikes and...

...An egalitarian company exists with equal rights for all employees regardless of job status, race, ethnicity, gender or political leanings. This organizational strategy can also slow down productivity and make it more difficult for your small business to change direction and anticipate risks. Pros -An egalitarian workplace promotes shared responsibilities among workers and a team work. -Without hierarchies employees feel more willing and contribute their ideas and function as a more inclusive workforce. -Provides a workforce that equally invests in your business and works hard toward the company's continued success. Cons -Slow to react to business risks and opportunities because of the lack of a managerial head to direct employee efforts. -Lack of organizational structure in job description and employee roles in an egalitarian business can quickly lead to disorganization. -Employees may struggle to reach a consensus on business direction and even the best methods to operate on a day-to-day basis. 1 Disney takes pride in what they do by providing great service and making magic happen. ...Introduction “Good customer service is the lifeblood of any business. You can offer promotions and slash prices to bring in as many new customers as you want, but unless you can get some of those customers to come back, your business won’t be profitable for long.” (As cited in Customer Service – 8 Rules For Good Customer Service 2009.) Excellent customer service is one of the key necessities that a business must have to run a successful enterprise. Businesses in today’s world are changing, especially in the marketing department. Weather the business is a large one, for example Wall Mart or just small local businesses that are family owned and operated, such as Wayne’s Drive Inn. The main point of any business is to focus on what the customers need is and to make sure they are satisfied with the quality of service that the business is providing. Businesses need to provide their employees on the front line with proper training, which means those employees that have contact and interact with customers on daily basis’s, weather face to face or verbally must be able to offer the amount of service required. Training is also important for business’s employees because those are the people your customers deal with, and also those employees are the face of the business. Therefore a businesses selection of employees can either make or break ones business. “Well, the Harvard Business Review reports that if you can prevent 5% of your customers from leaving you, you can increase yourbottom...

...Business Systems Whitley defines business systems as: ‘Distinctive ways of organizing economic activities that develop interdependently with dominant institutions in market economies. As the title of the article already mentions, it is about business systems. The author, Richard Whitley, divided the article over three parts and talks about the nature of business systems, the characteristics of business systems and the institutional influences on business systems. We will try to critically review this article using additional literature. We will try to identify the main points of the author and not summarize the article, and give arguments of whether it is useful for the fact book or not. Nature of business systems. The first part of Whitley’s theory is about the nature of business systems. He theorizes that business systems are patterns of economic organization that become institutionalized depending on the market economy( Whitley 1997). The nature of the business system depends on the institutions in the society of the business system. When institutions mutually strengthen each other, the business systems are better incorporated in the society. This might be of interest for the fact book, because it can be important for the investors. The state has a significant impact on the market economy, this part of the theory focuses on the degree of institutionalism. In our country comparison it might be of importance to look at this subject. Investors will probably agree that a...

...between these three parties. It’s clear that marketers (firms) have a greater part of responsibility than others, since they have to care about the welfare of all the stakeholders, including consumers. Marketers should work ethically and follow the corporate social responsibility. But foremost, it is important to define Corporate Social Responsibility, which is a most important concept actually in the business world. After the definition, the essay will show how marketing can drive consumers’ buying decision, demonstrate consumers’ irresponsible behavior and the government’s carelessness. Thus, what is CSR? Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is “a concept whereby companies integrate social and environmental concerns in their business operations and in their interaction with their stakeholders on a voluntary basis” (European Commission, 2006). For some researchers, this view of the corporation stands in stark contrast with the neo-classical shareholder view, asserting that a firm’s only responsibility is to do business and make a profit for the owners (Friedman, 1970). For most business ethics scholars, however, CSR is in the interest of businesses, in particular when stakeholders such as employees, consumers, Civil Society Organizations, and governments demand and value the respective efforts. Overall, the discourse on the...
