1.0 Introduction: Dymocks
Dymocks is the oldest Australian owned bookstore, with over 70+ stores spread across Australia and 12 in Hong Kong. It is a family owned business started by William Dymock in the year 1879, which focuses on leisure, learning and gift needs of all booklovers by providing excellent customer service and an enhanced book buying experience. The origin of the Dymocks flagship store was on George Street in Sydney. Dymocks sold over 60 million books in the year 2013. (The Dymocks Story, 2014)
Dymocks is the largest bookseller in Australia and currently holds close to 20% of the Australian book market, as well as it is the largest English language bookseller in Hong Kong. Dymocks not only has books, e-books, CDs, DVDs and other related items but also it an online store which was launched in the year 2006. (Dymocks Booksellers, 2014) 1.1 Book Retailing Industry in Australia
There are 5,200 companies running their book retailing businesses in Australia generating a revenue of over $3.8bn. The annual growth in this industry was negative 5.6% during the last five years (2009-2014). This industry is expected to continue its decline streak by 3.2% in the next five years (2014 – 2019). (IBIS, 2014)
Industry trading conditions have been affected by competition from external operators, including supermarkets and department stores. The challenging operating landscape has resulted in industry revenue declining. There is a collapse of global financial markets and uncertainty regarding the stability of the domestic economy which has led to a softer retail economy. The loss of revenue for book stores can be attributed to strong price-based competition with external players and solid growth in the volume of books bought via pure online players. (IBIS, 2014)
