...Exercise 2 Given below is a direct Memo from the President and CEO of Meherban Marketing Enterprises, Hyderabad, as part of company policy. To : All staff From : Vivaan Gupta President and CEO Date : 18 July 2014 Subject : Cutting Down Tour Expenditure of Officers In the recent months, I has been noticed that there is a spurt in the tour expenditure incurred by our officers when they had gone on tours/visits. This was not only a wasteful expenditure, but also sets a poor example to our subordinates. In view of the above, may I request to all the heads of divisions, to see that not more than 5% of the officers be sent on visits/tours at any one time. As far as possible they should not stay in accommodation which is higher than their entitlement/permissible allowance. The laundry expenses in a large number of cases which had exceeded the cost of board. I guess it is the time that with immediate effect a flat laundry allowance of Rs. 5/- per day should be granted. Entertainment allowance was also on the higher side. I would like to invite your opinion on the amount, which should be admissible. Personally, I think Rs. 15/- per day would be more than adequate. In addition, I received a representation from the officer’s union that they require a hike in their conveyance/fuel allowance, at Hyderabad. I am sure that all Divisional heads would motivate their staff to see this request of mine in its correct perspective. This policy...

...It’s about time (and how to manage it) My article was by John Zimmer, CC, CL. This article is focused on time and how to manage your time while giving speeches. This article starts off with a quote from Benjamin Franklin that says “Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time.” This article gives a lot of great tips for preparing your speech and knowing what to expect. Speakers must stay on time, by respecting the time you are given you’re also respecting your audience, other speakers that may be following you and the event coordinator that allotted you your time slot. Practicing your speech timing is critical. If you are given twenty minutes of speaking time, read your speech allowed to yourself or maybe a family member and have a timer with you. Although, know that practice time and live event time may not be the same. Laughter, questions and unexpected interruptions can make your presentation carry on longer that you may have expected. Having a handout for your audience that reads the most important parts of your speech is a great way to be prepared for any interruptions and to focus on your main key points of your presentation. Not only will this make your presentation better it’ll also make your presentation shorter. Always have a plan to cut your presentation short. If you are one of many speakers, not everyone is going to end their speech on time. “You can prepare two versions of your presentation...

At the counter, while making the payment he asked for the price. Rs. 950 was the answer. Meanwhile, Mrs. Sharma, who was still shopping came back and joined her husband. She was glad that he had selected a nice black shirt for himself. She pointed out that there was a 25% discount on that item. The counter person nodded in agreement. Mr. Sharma was thrilled to hear that “It means the price of this shirt is just Rs. 712. That’s fantastic”, said Mr. Sharma. He decided to buy one more shirt in blue color. In no time, he returned with the second shirt and asked them to be packed. When he received the cash memo for payment, he was astonished to find that he had to pay Rs. 1,900 and Rs. 1,424. Mr. Sharma could hardly reconcile himself to the fact that the counter person had quoted the discounted price which was Rs. 950. The original price printed on the price tag was Rs. 1,266. Questions 1. What should Mr. Sharma have done to avoid the misunderstanding? He should have firstly checked the price on the tag whilst selecting the shirt, even if he didn’t he should have confirmed with the cashier whether the price quoted by him was the original or the discounted one. 2. ...1992 S Oxford Dr Angelo, TX 76908 November 1 2013 Josh Wilson, Director Community Health Club 3336 W Loop 306 San Angelo, TX 76904 Dear Mr. Wilson: Introduction I have been a member of Community Health Club for over 6 months, and I have found that swimming laps every morning is a great way to not only stay in shape, but also a great way to reflect and focus for the day ahead. Unfortunately, in order to attain the peaceful experience every morning, I must arrive early enough to beat the rest of the members to the pool, or I risk sitting around waiting for a lane to open up. The issue not having a pool large enough to accommodate all of the members is not only a problem of member satisfaction, but also a financial issue. Fortunately, I have a proposal to build a full sized Olympic pool that can not only guarantee the satisfaction of the current members of Community Health Club, but also provide many new revenue opportunities. Background and Problem The current pool housed at Community Health Club is a 3-lane, 25-yard pool that is used for lap swimming, fitness classes, as well as free swim. With a pool this size, only one of these activities can be done at a particular time period. Not only does this create a scheduling issue while trying to find times for every activity for the different lifestyles of the members, but it also limits the number of classes or activities the club can offer. Add this problem to the fact that because the pool not large enough for...

...Barriers to Communication Author Michael K. Swan, Washington State University Reviewers Diane Jackman, Eastern Illinois University Gary Thome, Riverland Community College Introduction Communication plays a most important role in employer-employee relationships on farm operations. It also affects the relationships among family members on the management team. Although effective communication does not guarantee success of a farm operation, its absence usually assures problems. A communication problem may soon become a disaster or it may linger on for years. No matter how good the communication systems in an operation are, communication barriers can and do often occur. This may be caused by a number of reasons that can usually be summarized as being due to physical barriers, system design faults, or additional barriers. Physical barriers are often due to the nature of the environment. One natural barrier is when managers and employees are located in different buildings or on different sites of the operation. Likewise, poor or outdated equipment, particularly the failure of management to introduce new technology, may also cause problems. Employee shortages are another factor that frequently cause communication difficulties for an operation. While distractions like noise, poor lighting or an environment that is too hot or cold can all affect people’s spirits and concentration, which in turn interfere with effective communication. Not having an office and lunchroom...
