It has been said that effective communication is the success to having long lasting relationships. I truly believe the same applies to sustaining a healthy business as well. We communicate in every area of our life; whether it’s through text messaging, email, phone call or even Skype. Communication plays a major role in my day to day activities for work. I have to stay in constant communication with the customer, testing team, the packagers, and even the vendor. I’m a Systems Engineer by title but I’m responsible for different entities getting their software in order to successfully do their mission. It’s constant coordination with all parties to make sure that we exceed the customer’s expectations. Sometimes emails can only go so far, it may require some actual face time. It’s good to do that because you give the customer a sense that you do care about what it is that they want and you also build trust with them. You have to find a healthy balance between the different entities that you have in order to stay on top of everything. Not all entities are the same so you have to be constantly engaged as to what is going on with each particular entity. If a specific deliverable is giving one entity issues you have to be aware of this because in the future another entity may be requesting that same deliverable and you will already be aware as to what you can do to mitigate the risk. The trends that I’ve seen in the past and in the present would be a lot of emails. I cleaned my inbox out recently and at the end of the day, I was right back where I started at when the day began. Especially if there’s a hot topic floating around in an email chain, many people chime in to give their opinions and that can be constant reading of emails all day.
