Abstract
This paper describes how Hollywood movies can be used in the classroom to exemplify business ethics, customer service, gaol achievements, etc. The movie selected for this paper is “The Terminal”, directed by Steven Spielberg.
Itroduction:
The Terminal is a soft comedy movie directed by Steven Spielberg, it revolves around an eastern European man (Victor Navorski) whose plans of visiting New York on achieving a small goal, were shattered because of the conditions that took place in his home country when he is en-route to New York. During his journey some rebel groups take over the government of his country, Krakozhia, and the newly formed ruling body is not recognized by the U.S. His passport was issued for a country, which during his upheaval ceased to exist officially.
Unauthorized to leave JFK airport upon his arrival and unable to return home, Viktor finds himself exiled inside the terminal’s international lounge.
Though Customs and Borders protection head at the JFK airport, Frank Dixon sees Viktor as an annoying bureaucratic glitch, other airport employees come to see him as a welcome, if unofficial, addition to their members. Dixon tries to get rid of Viktor from the airport, and hints at escaping through the doors when the guards change their shifts, but Viktor is reluctant to do that and he wants to leave the airport and step outside only when he is officially given the admission to the U.S. Dixon, who desperately waits for his own promotion wants the removal of Viktor from the terminal by any means and wants his exit from the airport and get Viktor arrested and then the situation be someone else’s problem.
It needs to be realized that despite an undertone of whimsicality and the subtle comedy of Viktor, his situation carries significant emotional weight. It’s a feeling of complete dislocation and vulnerability when he learns that his country is in flames, seeing on the TV. Yet he gets the hang of it, and figures out how to eat, where to sleep, make himself comfortable and how to amuse himself in an inhospitable environment.
As the days stretch on into months, the terminal transforms itself from an intimidating atmosphere into a country within itself, complete with culture, ambition, status, complex diversity, and the need for love.
During his nine month wait in the airport terminal, Viktor was always optimistic making several attempts to get permission to enter the US main land, but was rejected all the time. He finds a way to make money out of no investment, by returning the carts to get the quarters from the machine and thus buying food for himself. He also makes himself a comfortable sleeping bed using the seats at the abandoned Gate 66 at the terminal. Also with his carpentry skills he finds himself an off-the-books job earning $19/- an hour. He also befriends with the airport janitor (Gupta), a food serving worker (Enrique), a baggage carrying worker (Mulroy) and a flight attendant (Amelia).
Viktor is asked to interpret for a Russian man who carries undocumented drugs for his sick father. Viktor claims it is a “medicine for goat”, barring the drug from confiscation and resolving the crisis. Viktor sets a good example of crisis management here.
A few months later the war at Krakozhia ends and his country is recognized by the U.S. but the field commission officer Dixon doesn’t allow him to enter the U.S. but rather decides to send him back to his country. With the help of Amelia Viktor obtains permission to travel within the U.S. but Dixon doesn’t sign it to make it official. Instead he threatens to fire his friends from their employment at the air port if Viktor doesn’t go back. Viktor’s friend at the airport, Gupta runs in front of the plane and causes some delay thus allowing Viktor some time to go into the city. Wit the help of the rest of the airport security staff, Viktor finally gets out of the air port and goes into the city.
Viktor’s final achievement of his goal was to collect autograph from a Jazz musician in New York City, which was one of his late father’s ambitions. He was able to collect autographs from all but one musician who plays at a hotel in New York City. Viktor finally gets a chance to meet the musician and achieves his goal.
The story of the movie was believed to be based on the true story of an Iranian, Mehran Karimi Nasseri who was detained at the Charles De Gaulle airport in Paris, France for about 17 years. Nasseri was expelled from Iran in 1977, applies for British citizenship claiming one of his parents was British but on his en-route to London his briefcase containing his papers was stolen in Paris. Despite his setback, he boarded the plane to London but was sent back to Paris. Since his entry to Paris was legal but he has no place to go and had no country of origin he remains in Paris air port at terminal 1. His story may have been the basis for the movie although it was not shown in the movie.

Concepts of an E-Business

...to start an e-business the main thing I would focus on would be functionality of the site and ease to make customers feel comfortable and confident about shopping with my storefront. By this I mean designing a site that gives customers several options for the products they are shopping for; along with that my customers would have access to multiple pictures of every product available, and a detailed description of the item they are interested in. My customers would also be able to compare similar items by their available options and provide a side by side analysis. The main thing for my e-business though would be the superior customer service that is provided to my clients by means of email, live chat, and a customer service hotline if you would prefer to talk to a representative. One of the final details that would make my site superior to others would be a hassle free return policy that even included return shipping for those who need to return their products for any reason. To be able to make this dream come true there are several other factors that I will be discussing throughout this paper as I present my business plan for establishing my storefront. I. E-Commerce Infrastructure Just as brick and mortar companies have an infrastructure to help them succeed in business, so do e-businesses. By having the correct infrastructure in place allows a company to run smooth, must be viewed as part of the overall picture at start up, and evolve as the business expands over time...

The 200 Best Home Businesses 29 What You Need Your main costs stem from the fact that you must buy a good fl eet of bicycles, typically twenty to twenty-fi ve of them at a cost of $300 or so each. If necessary, you can also rent garage space for $100–$300 per month. If you invest in only used bicycles, your maintenance costs could potentially be high. Basic Accounting Concepts and Business Structures

...Basic Accounting Concepts and Business Structures Different types of businesses use different accounting methods, small businesses tend to use the cash-basis of accounting, whereas the accrual method is a requirement for large business with revenue more than 5 million. Uniformity of accounting information is important when making decisions for or about a business. A hierarchy of sources provides structure for the generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Along with the hierarchy of sources, the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) identify qualitative characteristics to distinguish between useful and inferior information and to ensure accounting information assists in decision making. Qualities of Accounting Information There are internal and external users of accounting information for decision-making. Internal users are managers within a company that use the information to plan, organize, and run the business, “These include marketing managers, production supervisors, finance directors, and company officers” (Kimmel, Weygandt, & Kieso, p. 6, 2007). External users can be investors, “make decisions to buy, hold, or sell stock,” creditors, “suppliers and bankers use accounting information to evaluate the risks of granting credit or lending money” (Kimmel, Weygandt, & Kieso, p. 6, 2007). Concepts of Business

...Ford and the Four Components of Business As the presentation in the first lesson module shows us, the four components of business are business, profit, business environment, and economy. (Unknown, 2011) I am going to try to explain in my own words what these words mean in my understanding of them, as well as describe how one of the Fortune 500 Companies of 2009 fit into these four components of business. Business, business to me is a company that buys, sells, makes, or provides services to products for an exchange of monies. Basically they make things, buys things, sell things, or fix things in the efforts to yield a profit. I decided to use Ford Motor Company (Ford) for my Fortune 500 Company to give a description of its organization. Ford fits into my definition of what a business is very easily. They are a manufacturing company, making several different products from Large Trucks like dump trucks and box trucks or what they label as a commercial vehicle, to small economy cars like the Ford Fiesta. So just by that alone Ford is a business as per the definition I gave earlier. The make a product to sell to the consumers, as well as products to service their products for the consumers and they do all this for the opportunity to make a tremendous revenue or profit, which profit just happens to be the second of the four components of business. (Cable News Network A Time Warner Company, 2009) Profit is simply this, gaining more money in revenue when selling something then...

International Business Concept

...Concept of political environment The political scenario in a country is the outcome of the interacting influence of various interest groups such as individual households, firms, politicians, bureaucrats and many others. The stronger a particular interest group the more prominent its ideology will manifest in the overall political scenario. In a country with federal character, where different interest groups are prominent at different levels, different ideologies exist side by side at the same juncture. The political scenario in different states may be different. Even at the centre, the political scenario may change with changes in the dominant interest group. As opposed to diverse political environments in a particular country, a particular political ideology may be found in more than one country. It is because the ethnic background, language, religion and so on bring many countries within the fold of one common political ideology. For example, it was the ethnic considerations that brought Serbs of the neighbouring regions into one political umbrella known as Greater Serbia. Thus political environment is marked by both diversity and uniformity. The political scenario often varies between the two extremes democracy on the one hand and totalitarianism on the other. The purest form of democracy represents direct involvement of citizens in policy making. But with growing time and distance barriers over time, it did not remain feasible for all citizens to participate in the political...

Business Terms and Concepts

...Understanding Business Research Terms and Concepts: Part 2 Statistical procedures can be divided into two major categories: descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. When it comes to statistical analysis, there are two classifications: descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. In a nutshell, descriptive statistics intend to describe a big hunk of data with summary charts and tables, but do not attempt to draw conclusions about the population from which the sample was taken. Descriptive statistics are very important because if we simply presented our raw data it would be hard to visualize what the data was showing, especially if there was a lot of it. Descriptive statistics therefore enables us to present the data in a more meaningful way, which allows simpler interpretation of the data. Descriptive statistics includes statistical procedures that we use to describe the population we are studying. The data could be collected from either a sample or a population, but the results help us organize and describe data. Descriptive statistics can only be used to describe the group that is being studying. On the other hand inferential statistics allows us to draw conclusions from data that might not be immediately obvious. In most cases an inferential statistic is used to test some hypothesis. Inferential statistics is concerned with making predictions or inferences about a population from observations and analyses of a sample. I was able to come across two article...
