... Throughout the story, “Glass Menagerie”, Tennessee Williams wrote responses of each character that was able to develop the thesis, plot, and themes. Details given early in the book help establish the characters’ personalities and physical looks, which aide to the readers understanding of the characters’ actions. The conversation between Amanda and Laura, (page 17) “Amanda: Girls that aren’t cut out for business careers usually wind up married to some nice man….Laura: But Mother…..I’m- crippled!” reveals that Laura is physically handicapped and she allows her disabilities to determine her choices in life because she is embarrassed. This certain conversation is important because it displays Laura’s insecurity, which affected her decision to drop out of business school. When reading this conversation I became saddened by the fact that Laura allows her physical disability to govern her life. She is held back from being successful in life because she has a mental block. Later in the text, the author reveals to the reader that Laura has no social life and dropped out of business school because she could not handle the pressure. Not only am I saddened by Laura’s yielding behavior, but I can relate to her mental block. When entering high school I was very small, to be exact, I was 5’2 112 pounds, while the average male peer was 5’8 150 pounds. Because of my lack of size, I tended to be non-aggressive; playing football I was scared of being demolished and I decided not to play basketball...

...American Realism The Civil War tore the country apart. Once America was reunited in 1865, there was a lot of healing that needed to take place to correct the wounds Americans had suffered at the hands of their kin. In these years there were still a lot of questions to answer and still a lot of truth to be found out about the nation itself. The questions of the place of African-Americans, white Americans, political Americans and every other kind of American out there was a source for constant frustration and violence. This is the background and the huge dust storm that American Realism rose out of. Prior to the Civil War, America was knee deep in the Romantic Movement which included writers such as Hawthorne, Thoreau, Melville, Poe and Whitman. Their writings focused on the puritan aspects of their ancestors or of the dark romance and psychological perspectives writers such as Poe and Melville used. However, after the war, this movement began to fade and Realism increased as the choice reading of the people. This was due to multiple events and changes in culture that led to Americans looking for something better to relate to. The first event was the end of the Civil War. The Civil War showed the violent intentions men had towards each other and also showed the vulnerability of men and the nation and how ungodly man actually was. However, Realism did not begin immediately after the Civil War but rather took off in the 1880’s. So what happened in the 1880’s then? The 1880’s...

...to pass on the expenses? Likely not. The fact is that consumers of college textbooks typically don't have a choice, making the demand inelastic and allowing publishers to charge prices well above what the consumer may value. While fantastic for publishers' margins, is this bubbly business sustainable? Let's analyze it. The rotating roster of publishers McGraw-Hill Education, now owned by Apollo Group (NASDAQ: APOL ) , Pearson (NYSE: PSO ) , and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt make up the three largest educational publishers. The previous owner of McGraw-Hill Education, McGraw Hill Financial (NYSE:MHFI ) , completed the sale of its textbook segment in March for $2.4 billion in cash, which it is using for share buybacks. Why did McGraw Hill want to divest from its education segment? The company's press release positions the slimmer group as "a high-growth, high-margin benchmarks, content and analytics company." And since completing the sale in March, McGraw Hill's stock has outperformed the S&P 500 by 14%. But was the segment that big of a drag? Not too much. In 2011, its education business brought in 37% of its total revenue, with a 14% operating margin -- what could be considered a healthy business. However, compared to its other businesses, like the S&P Ratings segment, which packs an operating margin of more than 40%, the education segment was the slowest and least flashy of them all. Pearson, meanwhile, takes in 50% of revenue from its North American Education segment, at...

...“Paradise Lost”. John Bunyan. “Pilgrim’s Progress”. The peculiarities of the English literature of the 17th century are determined by the events of the Engl. Bourgeois Revolution, which took place in 1640-60. King Charles I was beheaded in 1649& General Oliver Cromwell became the leader of the new government. In 1660, shortly after Cro-ll’s death, the dynasty of the Stuarts was restored. The establishment of new social&eco-ic relations, the change from feudal to bourgeois ownership, escalating class-struggle, liberation movement and contradictions of the bourgeois society found their reflection in lit-re. The main representatives of this period is: John Milton: was born in London&educated at Christ’s College. He lived a pure life believing that he had a great purpose to complete. At college he was known as the The Lady of Christ’s. he Got master’s degree at Cambridge. It’s convenient to consider his works in 3 divisions. At first he wrote his short poems at Horton. (The Passion, Song on May Morning, L’Allegro). Then he wrote mainly prose. His 3 greatest poems belong to his last group. At the age of 23 he had still done little in life&he admits this in one of his sonnets. (On his 23d B-day) In his another sonnet he wrote on his own blindness. (On his Blindness) Milton wrote diff. kinds of works. His prose works were mainly concerned with church, affairs, divorce & freedom. The English civil war between Charles I & Parliament followed by the 2nd civil war...

...Jennifer Golson English 1302 Final draft Tennessee Williams once said “Symbols are nothing but the natural speech of drama.”(where I live 20) His disposition to transform the world of his experience into symbols can be found throughout his writing. The Glass Menagerie is one of Williams’ greatest plays and one of the most intense in terms of symbolism. The very title of the play is a symbol, and symbols occupy almost every sentence. It is said that this literary work was written as an allegory of his own life’s disappointments. The characters, lighting, glass, and even the props all prove to be somewhat symbolic in nature. In the play a southern family, trapped by poverty and codependency, struggles to survive in St. Louis. The story is narrated by Tom Wingfield who struggles with choosing between his own personal dreams versus accepting the reality of his families situation. Tom and his family live in an alley apartment and survive mainly on Tom's salary from a shoe factory. Having dreams that are bigger than St Louis he lives in a fantasy world and his mind is comsumed with thoughts of escaping their dreary lifestyle. The fire escape and goingto the movies are his only solice. He is able to live vicariously through the characters on screen, watching their adventures cause he is not able to live his own. Toms sister Laura is slightly cripple and is incredibly insecure. She had to wear a brace on her leg because of a childhood disease so she felt inferior. She...

...China China is an ancient culture with numerous regional and national traditions and values. While some of the traditions have died out, many are still a very important part of the Chinese society. The role of men and women in China has changed significantly. In China (100 years ago up to a few decades ago), women were treated as inferior in comparison to men, and were restricted to the confines of their homes to raise the children and clean (Live Science, 2013). They would also sew and weave, and prepare food for guests. Women were thought of as yielding, receptive, passive, reflective, and tranquil, where men were hard, active, assertive, and dominating. The men were the sole income and ‘head of the household’. Their job was to bring home money and food for the wife and children while the woman stayed at home. Throughout much of China’s history, women were undermined and almost used as slaves. When communism was introduced (in the 1920’s), women and men became more equal, although they are still not completely equivalent in terms of social and economic status. The One-Child-Policy has pushed the number of women down in China, due to Chinese parents only wanting boys (they are thought of as more ‘beneficial’). Men are still the ‘dominant race’, as they are higher in the percentage of the population in China. In Australia, women and men are almost completely equal. Both women and men both work in politics, manual labour, education, law enforcement, etc. with almost equivalent...

Fushimi Inari Taisha The shrine sits at the base of a mountain also named Inari which is 233 metres above sea level, and includes trails up the mountain to many smaller shrines which span 4 kilometers and takes approximately 2 hours to walk up Since early Japan, Inari was seen as the patron of business, and merchants and manufacturers have traditionally worshipped Inari. Each of the torii at Fushimi Inari Taisha is donated by a Japanese business. First and foremost, though, Inari is the god of rice. The main shrine structure was built in 1499.[6] At the bottom of the hill are the main gate (楼門?, rōmon, "tower gate") and the main shrine (御本殿?, go-honden). Behind them, in the middle of the mountain, the inner shrine (奥宮?, okumiya) is reachable by a path lined with thousands of torii. To the top of the mountain are tens of thousands of mounds (塚?, tsuka) for private worship. * an important...
