Business Environment 1
Final Essay 2014 – 2015
Section 1: PEST Analysis Technique * Section 1.1
Social environment is the sign of the human spirit civilization and material civilization’s development. On the basis of the natural environment, through long-term conscious social labor, human beings have been processing and transforming the natural material and then social environment was formed. Social environment as one of the external environment factors has a great influence on business. With lasting changes in social environment that will cause demand of human beings for new products. (Haider, 2010) As a result, social environment will give marketing a new guidance. And demographic and cultural will be included as two main factors in social environment.
Demographic is to gather people in groups that share with same common criteria. Because of the variables of demographic, demographic is divided in many parts. Such as age, gender, income, race, religion. (Naik, 2013) Cultural is the values and ideologies of a particular group of individuals. And it consists of languages, regions, habits, arts and so on. (Zimmermann, 2015) Besides, both demographic and cultural have direct link with marketing. Demographic will direct determine the potential capacity of the market. What’s more, the structure of population age and the level of education will have profound influence on market structure. Due to different cultural will cause different consumption concept, so cultural will affect customer’s consumption idea directly. Further to say, different consumption ideas will require companies to design different marketing strategies.
Without a good knowledge of different cultural in different districts, it is very easy to make mistakes in marketing strategies. For example, a brand name for the product’s quality and reliability of a language may cause severe negative connotation. One of Iran's razor makers use "Tiz" as the name of brand, the Persian word means "sharp", in order to show the quality of the razor. However, the makers found that “Tiz” is a slang word of Arabic for "buttocks" after they exported their razors to Qatar. So the razor remained a bad impression on Arabic-speaking residents. As a result, the manufacturers of razor failed in Qatar market. (Hanks, 2015) Language as one of the most significant factors will have great impact on international business. In addition, language is the crucial medium for businessman to communicate with their consumers and understand ideas of their products. So when the company make mistake about language on their product, they will gain a bad brand in customers’ mind and then lose customers in the market. * Section 1.2

According to the B.C. population Pyramid, it shows that the data of either males or females has been increasing from 2009. With the total number of people increasing, the population of aging people has been increasing. Besides, the population of baby still has been increasing. However, the population of aging people is larger than the population of babies. And the population of age 20 to 30 years old people has little increase.

The component of B.C. population has three parts. International migration has been the biggest factors for growth of B.C. population. On the contrary, natural increase has the smallest effect on B.C. population change. British Columbia is the main international trade center of Canada and Vancouver as the largest city in British Columbia has the second lowest unemployment rate about 5.8% in January of 2015. (Canadian Visa Expert, 2012) British Columbia with good economic development is a wise choice for immigration who wants to immigrate to Canada. As a result, every year there is a large number of immigrants immigrate to British Columbia.

Religion is one of the main cultural factors in British Columbia. On the one hand, Canada is no state religion of the secular state and the constitution guarantees the freedom of religious belief. On the other hand, British Columbia has a lot of immigrants. So there are many different kinds of religions in this province.

Labor Force Growth, British Columbia
Labor Force Growth, British Columbia
According to the table and chart given above, it is easy to find the population of British Columbia is going to be aging in 2036. And with the decrease of sex ratio, the population of males will become much less than females. Besides, the total fertility rate will decrease in the next several decades. As a result of this change, there will be fewer young people getting participate in the labor market. And the older employees who are supposed to retire will continue to do their work. (WorkBC, 2009) This will be a big challenge for British Columbia’s labor market.
(Data Source: BC Stats 2009)
(Data Source: BC Stats 2009)

The labor force grew over 2.5 percent from 2007 to 2008. However, it decelerated sharply to just 1.0 percent from 2009. And the growth of labor force in British Columbia will keep around 1.0 percent from 2009 to 2018. Because in 2008, as the number of youth (ages 15-24) around 590,000, it was a big number and what caused a lower participation in labor force market. (WorkBC, 2009) So from 2009, the growth percent of labor force has decelerated sharply.
Section 2: Recommendation to My Company’s Client Name | The name of the company is “Sky Liquefied Natural Gas company”, and the company has set up for 15 years. The company was founded in 2000. It started in China and now the company expanded in British Columbia. At beginning, they just sale the production in British Columbia. 10 years ago, it opened the USA market. In the next 10 years, the company wants to open the Europe market and expand through all Europe. | Activity | The Sky Liquefied Natural Gas company’s activity refers to the natural gas. They make natural gas to liquefy and then to transport liquefied natural gas (LNG) and export it. | Size | Sky Liquefied Natural Gas company is a medium size company and has 150 employees. The turnover of the company is 20 million USD. | Strength | 1. Advanced technology 2. Good reputation 3. Fixed customers | Weakness | 1. Due to recent new projects, the company has not enough funds to support itself to do the whole business. 2. The lack of good managers to manage the employees in the company. |
To explore and develop Liquefied Natural Gas projects will cost billions of dollars and bring a huge investment about $18 billion. Furthermore, Liquefied Natural Gas projects will also bring massive revenue. For instance, it is estimated that the first stage of the production planned by Kitimat LNG plant can lead to $90 million revenues every annual and will get a total revenues more than $1 billion by 2035. Another opportunity for Sky Liquefied Natural Gas Company is the variety of markets. Most of the natural gas exports to different areas. Every day three billion cubic feet of natural gas produced in British Columbia and only 16% of it was consumed in B.C., 41% of it was exported to America and 43% through the pipe delivered to the other districts of Canada. (Ministry of Energy and Mines, 2012)
Liquefied Natural Gas as an industry has different division of labor. So it needs a lot of skilled and experienced workers. As the labor supply being decreasing in B.C., other industrial projects will be the external competition to Liquefied Natural Gas project. (Premier’s LNG Working Group, 2014) In addition, with B.C. is rich in natural gas that caused a low-priced of natural gas. So the company has a price advantage over its competitors. However, the suppliers defend their market share vigorously that will cause destructive competition and bring bad effect to natural gas suppliers in B.C. (Hussain, 2013)
Faced with the lack of skilled and trained labor, the company can provide the potential workers with skill training. Besides, the company can improve bonuses to attract employees stay in the company and make sure the satisfaction of employees to the company. To avoid destructive competition between other competitors, the company has to respect its own management idea and make good reputation for its product. In addition, improve the quality of the products and then promote the products to consumers and give them better service.
Section 3: British Columbia Changes in Liquor Market Regulations
News Release from British Columbia Government (November 19, 2014), the liquor market in the province is going through big changes due to the latest regulation modifications. The new liquor policy in British Columbia province will take effect on April 1st, 2015. “Grocery stores are allowed to sell liquor through the store-within-a-store model. As well, that same day, restrictions will be lifted on BC Liquor Stores, allowing them to offer refrigeration and to stay open longer hours, including on Sundays.” (NEWSROOM, 2014) According to this policy, it will offer more choices and bring greater convenience to consumers. Consumers can not only buy liquor in the liquor stores, but also in grocery stores. As a result, more consumers will prefer to buy liquor in grocery stores rather than liquor stores. What’s more, for small- and medium-sized breweries, it will be an opportunity for them to grow and expand under this new liquor policy. (NEWSROOM, 2014)
However, as grocery stores will begin to sell liquor to consumers, liquor stores will face a big competition for them without any advantage in the market. Moreover, government’s 123 percent mark-up on wine and 170 percent mark-up on spirits from the wholesale price caused the selling price of liquor increased. (Woo, 2013) Because of the mark-up made by government, the sellers will receive little discount on their liquor. So in order to make profit, sellers have to increase the selling price. Although by moving to gradual increases in mark-up rates, the price of liquor will increase, the market can be more responsive to the needs of consumers with competition increasing. (NEWSROOM, 2014) Because of more intensive competition, consumers have more choices and the price will decrease to attract consumers.
British Columbia and California will have a trade dispute over the incoming British Columbia’s regulations. Because the regulation of only B.C. Vintners Quality Alliance wines to be sold at B.C. grocery stores can’t be agreed. And VP Tom LaFaille wrote, “Since these new opportunities are not extended to imported wines, they violate Canada’s international trade obligations including NAFTA, GATT and the EU-‐Canada Agreement on wine sales.” (McElroy, 2015) However, British Columbia government regards this regulation as an opportunity for British Columbia wineries. Besides, it will encourage British Columbia’s home-grown economy. (NEWSROOM, 2014) Only B.C. Vintners Quality Alliance wines to be sold at B.C. grocery stores will promote consumers to buy this kind of product, so with more B.C. wines sold, the home-grown economy of British Columbia will improve.

The Role of Business Businesses are the engine of the economy. Businesses rely on the factors of production, which include four fundamental resources; natural resources, capital, human resources, and entrepreneurship (Kelly & McGowen, 2010). These five dimensions include the following environment: technological, competitive, global, social, and economical. For Profit and Non-Profit Organizations Comparison There are many similarities of for profit and non-profit organizations. ...Lela Jones Business Environment Task 1 1.1 Identify the purposes of different types of organisations. A business organisation is a collection of people, collaborating in a coordinated, structured and managed way to meet shared aims and goals. Organisations will come in all shapes and sizes, but will all have a common factor of goal orientation. “A system that coordinates people, jobs and technology and management practices to achieve a goal” Umstot (1998). A business will always be owned by someone whether it’s an individual or hundreds, with different types of ownership and objectives. Although profit may not always be the main objective, as those of charities or government run enterprises, some profit will need to be made for them to continue in business long term. The majority of organisations will aim to make a profit however small or large. There are many types of business organisations, including sole traders, partnerships, public limited companies, private limited companies, franchises and those in the public sector e.g. local authority and N.H.S. Sole Traders This is a business owned by one person, and the most common according to BIS (Department for business innovation and skills statistical release 2013), its estimated 62.6% of UK businesses are sole traders, but as there is no central register for them it is hard to establish exact numbers, a sole trader will employ one or more people, and can easily be set up compared to other types of organisations,...

Business Environment

...The Business Environment I believe businesses have a huge role in today’s economy. The most important role I believe is providing jobs, which is a necessary part that business plays in any and all economies. The economy of the country is dependent upon the employment provided by big and small businesses and production of goods and services that we rely on in our day to day lives. Without businesses, you are unable to have any sort of a free market economy. Businesses also tend to provide the innovations and or an idea that makes the markets grow. Small businesses employ large numbers of people. They are necessary to molding a sense of independence, risk-taking, self-reliance, and personal achievement The comparisons and differences of Non Profit and For-Profit organizations and similar but yet still not the same you have to understand the meaning of profit. In business, profit is a word used to describe earnings. A nonprofit organization has a mission that benefits the community, society, or the world at times. It doesn’t any pay taxes, but it also cannot use its funds for anything other than the mission for which it was formed. Nonprofit organizations can and do make a profit, but it must be used only for the operation of the organization. The strength of a nonprofit is its efficiency in meeting consumer demands at minimal cost. Non-Profits meet these demands through work performed by volunteers, tax deductible contributions by taxpayers and direct government assistance ...

...The Business Environment James D Perkins Dr. Marcus Crawford Business 100 January 27, 2012 Abstract Businesses are the main provider of jobs in a capitalist economy and the primary reason for economic growth. The definition of business is any activity that provides good and services in an effort to earn a profit. Businesses in the economy drive up the standard of living and overall quality of life for humans. These businesses produce the products we enjoy and in turn create jobs people need. The major difference between profit and nonprofit businesses is the main goal of profit organizations is to generate a profit for the owners and nonprofit is to use their surplus of funds to advance the goals of the organization. Fiscal policy and monetary policy refer to the efforts to shape the health of the economy. Direct investment and foreign outsourcing are the two key components in deciding which direction to expand a business global. U.S. based company Apple boosts huge profits, but has lost touch with the social obligation it has to Americans by sending all jobs overseas. Businesses are the main provider of jobs in a capitalist economy and the primary reason for economic growth. The definition of business is “any activity that provides good and services in an effort to earn a profit” (Kelly 2012). Most everything in the world related to economy is business. This role depends upon business enterprises operating within the framework of a competitive market economy (David Henderson, “The Role of Business in the modern world, The Enterprise Institute).” Compare and contrast the roles of for profit and nonprofit organizations in the economy. Nonprofit business, like establishments that employ people and produce goods and services with the fundamental goal of contributing to the community rather than generating financial gain (Kelly / McGowan). Nonprofit organizations have to be present in the economy to create services and goods that are...
