In the last 15 years, perhaps half of all above-the-average businessmen are [what they are]…either with my blessing or at least a smile from me. * Ahmed Dogan (Bulgarian Politician, former leader of the ethnic Turks’party Movement for Rights and Freedoms), 2005 Corrupted politicians, lobbying from wealthy businessmen, forceful advocacy from particular societal groups, influence peddling from local and national government representatives – all these are scenarios that Bulgarian citizen hear and read about in Bulgarian media day after day. That is why when in 2005 Dogan said those words, Bulgarian society wasn’t shock by their content; it was no news to us. Actually, the only shock from these words was from the cynicism and the sense of impunity with which a party leader would talk before television cameras. Overall, Bulgarian society is rather used to the concept of corruption. Bulgaria has been ranked for years among the top in the world in terms of corruption (Mulcahy, 2012)...

Modern Day Business

...Introduction The success of every business is highly influenced by the development and practice of its marketing strategy. Especially in the sphere of small and medium- sized businesses, where long term marketing is essential, since recognising and satisfying consumers’ needs in time is the only way to raise the company’s compatibility. ‘I think it’s a good and necessary thing that companies are focusing beyond “customer service” and looking at the whole customer experience. Making sure that your customers have a thoroughly positive experience when dealing with you can be a huge competitive advantage’ Erika Andersen (2011) suggests. We have chosen our product to be a café- bar under the name ‘Ansita’. This decision was influenced by our awareness of the potential of the beverage industry and belief that our methods of operation would positively differentiate our product in the market. The main advantages of, ‘Ansita’ are its location and the lack of direct competitors. The café- bar is located extremely close to the centre of the city Haskovo. ‘Ansita’ is an alternative to the lack of social atmosphere and cafes for young people in the region and is likely to retain young people’s entertainment spending within the city. The café will specialise in thematic dinners and serve coffee, alcoholic and non- alcoholic drinks as well as cocktails. Biomass Energy in Ruse Region

...GENERAL OVERVIEW - BULGARIA Current Status of Biomass Energy There exists a large potential to utilize biomass as an energy source in Bulgaria. Bulgaria has a total land area of approximately 110,000 km2, of which some 6,200,000 ha, or approximately 60 percent of the overall land area, consists of arable and agriculture lands, and 3,903,000 ha, or approximately 30 percent, is forest cover. While information regarding the use and potential of biomass has been limited, there have been recent developments through pilot projects and preliminary evaluations that do begin to highlight Bulgaria’s full potential. Next to the country’s hydro resources, biomass accounts for a sizable share of Bulgaria’s final energy consumption, approximately 3.7 percent or 409,000 toe of the calculated 10,918,000 toe total consumption (Sofia Energy Center data report). Due to the lack of reliable nationwide assessments and data, it is estimated that in practice this number is much larger. The majority of the biomass energy consumption exists mainly in the rural areas, where fuelwood, followed by the residential consumption of wood briquettes produced from forestry wastes and sawmill byproducts amount to approximately 2 million m3 per year. In addition, wastes generated from agricultural and farming activities are produced in large quantities and exploitation of these wastes can prove to be significant source for energy generation. As the land of Bulgaria is rich and fertile, farming activities...

...Goals and Objective I have always been a humanitarian in my heart. One example that has made a significant mark on my career was a donation shipment received from a United States military installation in Germany to be distributed to centers for children with special needs in Bulgaria in collaboration with the Bulgarian Red Cross. As an employee of the United States Embassy in Bulgaria, my responsibility encompassed the coordination of the customs clearance and distribution of the donation following the donor’s intent. Not long after the project finished, I received a phone call from the director of one of the centers to thank me for my work and express her gratitude for my help. Later on, I received a thank you card in the mail handmade by one of the children in the center. This event helped me realize the satisfaction that comes from the positive impact on people’s lives through a career in humanitarian logistics. I feel very privileged to have gained invaluable work experience in the shipping and logistics field working for the United States Government, the private industry, and non-profit sector for the past 12 years. Living through transition while growing up, I learnt to adapt to uncertainty and instability. As a result, I can easily relate to people in developing countries whose lives have been abruptly interrupted as a result of armed conflict or natural disaster. As a citizen of both transitioning and developed countries, I sincerely care for people who...
