**Additional References for Business Plan Writing** Industry Analysis     Industry analysis is business research that focuses on the potential of an industry. An industry is a group of firms producing a similar product or service, such as music, fitness drinks, or electronic games. Once it is determined that a new venture is feasible in regard to the industry and market in which it will compete, a more in-depth analysis is needed to learn the ins-and-outs of the industry the firm plans to enter. When studying an industry, an entrepreneur must answer three questions before pursuing the idea of starting a firm. i. First, is the industry accessible – in other words, is it a realistic place for a new venture to enter? ii. Second, does the industry contain markets that are ripe for innovation or are underserved? iii. Third, are there positions in the industry that will avoid some of the negative attributes of the industry as a whole? It is useful for a new venture to think about its position at both the company level and the product or service level. At the company level, a firm’s position determines how the entire company is situated relative to its competitors.

 

\\Industry vs. Firm Level Factors   To illustrate the importance of the industry a firm chooses to enter, research has shown that both firm- and industry-specific factors contribute to a firm’s profitability. In various studies, researchers have found that from 8 to 30 percent of the variation in firm profitability is directly attributable to the industry in which a firm competes.

\\Studying Industry Trends a. Environmental Trends  Economic trends, social trends, technological advances, and political and regulatory changes are the most important environmental trends for entrepreneurs to study. b. Business Trends  Other trends impact industries that aren’t environmental trends per se but are

Business Plan

...20 Reasons Why You Need a Business Plan Written by Pete Kennedy Categories: * Business Planning 1. To prove that you’re serious about your business. A formal business plan is necessary to show all interested parties -- employees, investors, partners and yourself -- that you are committed to building the business. 2. To establish business milestones. The business plan should clearly lay out the long-term milestones that are most important to the success of your business. To paraphrase Guy Kawasaki, a milestone is something significant enough to come home and tell your spouse about (without boring him or her to death). Would you tell your spouse that you tweaked the company brochure? Probably not. But you'd certainly share the news that you launched your new website or reached $1M in annual revenues. 3. To better understand your competition. Creating the business plan forces you to analyze the competition. All companies have competition in the form of either direct or indirect competitors, and it is critical to understand your company's competitive advantages. 4. To better understand your customer. Why do they buy when they buy? Why don’t they when they don't? An in-depth customer analysis is essential to an effective business plan and to a successful business. 5. To enunciate previously unstated assumptions. The process of actually writing the business plan helps to bring previously "hidden" assumptions to the foreground. By writing them down and assessing them...

Business Plan

...Writing your first business plan • Writing your first business plan The best managed businesses see planning as a continuous activity in which they set both long-term and short-term objectives. Having a plan should not be considered a straightjacket, but as a way of ensuring that everyday activities happen in a structured way. Well managed businesses will see a plan as a framework providing the ability to be flexible and responsive when opportunities arise, without being blown totally off course. Knowing that the bulk of your activities are performing according to plan will give you the freedom to explore those opportunities. Regular monitoring of how a business is performing is also important to determine if goals and objectives are being met. Surveys of small and growing businesses suggest that those who plan are more likely to make a higher profit. Ideally, you should write down the results of your planning process - though you may find that your plan is best summarised as a list of key objectives together with a budget. There may be occasions, however, when you have to explain the plan to a third party in order to demonstrate a proposed course of action for the business. This is particularly so if you are about to start in business and are seeking financial support. When a business is on top of its planning, it becomes a very straightforward process to summarise the different elements into a written plan. In the same way that a balance sheet gives a snapshot of the...

...to the penalties of copying from sources and/or from their fellow students. They should understand that any plagiarised and/or copied assignment will result in a heavy market deduction. Small Business Plan Editor: Tim Berry (http://articles.bplans.com/writing-a-business-plan/) For any start-ups, a business plan allows gaining a better understanding of the industry structure, competitive landscape, and the capital requirements of starting a small business. Normally a business plan is difficult to implement unless it is simple, specific, realistic and complete. In addition, a good plan will need someone to follow up and check on it. The plan depends on the human factor, particularly the process of commitment and involvement, and the tracking and follow-up that comes afterward. Successful implementation usually starts with a good plan. There are elements that will make a plan more likely to be successfully implemented. It includes: 1. Is the plan simple? Is it easy to understand and to act on? Does it communicate its contents easily and practically? 2. Is the plan specific? Are its objectives concrete and measurable? Does it include specific actions and activities, each with specific date of completion, specific persons responsible and specific budgets? 3. Is the plan realistic? Are the sales goals,...

Why Write an Executive Summary

...Summary: Why Write It? Investors, lenders, executives, managers and CEOs are busy. Always. That means that the executive summary is an essential gateway for your business plan to get read. Think about it this way: if you had an endless list of things to do, and someone handed you an 80-page document and said "read this! you'd probably first want to know why. "The most important reason to include an executive summary is that in many cases, it is the only thing the reader will read," says Pablo Bonjour, founder & CEO of Katy, Texas-based SMG Business Plans, a company that offers entrepreneurs assistance in writing business plans. According to Bonjour, investors will read the executive summary to decide if they will even bother reading the rest of the business plan. It's rare for an investor or lender to read an entire business plan, at least in the initial stages of analysis and consideration for funding, so having a strong executive summary is key. When you're writing your business plan, your goal is to get your foot in the door and face-time with the investor. "Assuming that your business is a good fit for the investor, a strong executive summary will get you invited in for a meeting," Hirai says. "A poor executive summary will leave you standing in the cold."
