Business Portfolio When embarking upon any new business venture, there are many things to think about in its inception. In order to be successful, one must take the time to create a business plan that will incorporate all the aspects that a business requires. When building and maintaining a business, preparation is paramount to its success.
To ensure that the business is well-established for success, certain factors must be considered. In building the business organization for the Ortiz Daycare, several things were considered in the planning stages, starting with organization of the details in setting up the facility to meet state standards. A budget for operational costs was set up to help control start-up costs of the business. The company vision was then established as a foundation for what it would take for the organization to succeed. With any new business venture there are legal and ethical issues to be considered. In order to help avoid the pitfalls that sometimes come with a new business, an employee handbook outlining the procedures and policies of the business will be created. This would help in making sure that the organization would not fall into any unethical or illegal practices. Maintaining the employee handbook, and updating it as needed, would allow for ongoing adherence to the procedures and policies. This will allow the business to create a professional culture where everyone is valued, and made to feel they are protected by the employer.
In business, the credo “there is a culture like it or not.” (Dougherty 2014 HBR) definitely holds true. Part of the business model for the Ortiz Daycare Facility includes the culture that the business will run most effectively when adhering to the policies, procedures, and employee training. This will help to establish the vision

...invest state pension money in the stock market as a result of the efforts of city Treasurer Richard Eckstrom who believed that instead of investing the state pension funds exclusively in government and corporate bonds, diversification into equity securities would substantially increase return on investment without substantially increasing risk. 2. Investing in the stock market involves more risk than investing in bonds, and stocks are not guaranteed to return anything to the investor. However, investing in the stock market also presents the possibility for higher returns, the benefit of partial ownership in a company and the unlimited potential of a rising stock price, as well as the opportunity of further diversification of the portfolio. 3. The differences in return between stocks and bonds are that stocks have a higher return than bonds as shown with the average returns. Bonds have an average return ranging from about 3% to about 6% while stocks show an average return of about 13%. The risk in investments between stocks and bonds are shown in the standard deviation. While bonds have lower returns they also are less risky and less volatile than stocks. The volatility of bonds range from about 4% to about 9% while the volatility of stocks is about 20%. 4. Mosaic Project

...White Paper The Strategic Management of Projects The concept of Managing projects describes the organisation’s ability to select, nurture and deliver projects and programs effectively. The strategic capability to manage projects1 expands this general concept to include the direction of the organisation’s overall Project Delivery Capability (PDC) towards the achievement of its strategic objectives. The strategic management of projects includes all of the aspects of project delivery discussed in our white paper PDC Taxonomy2 (outlined below) focused on realising strategic value for the organisation. In many organisations, implementing an effective and rigorous PDC structure will require a major organisational change effort and will challenge existing cultures, particularly the tendency of executives to focus on project failure rather than organisational failure when their organisation fails to adequately support the management of its projects. 2 The PDC Architecture outlined in WP1074 – PDC Taxonomy 1 Strategic project management has many different terms for the same general set of management capabilities required to support the efficient delivery of the ‘right’ projects and programs. Some options include: - The Management of Projects: Prof. Peter Morris’ concept - Enterprize Project Management: tends to be used for the supporting software tools - Enterprise Project Governance: (used in a book by Paul Dinsmore & Luiz Rocha) focused on How to Manage Projects...

Understanding the Risk of Synthetic CDOs Abstract: Synthetic collateralized debt obligations, or synthetic CDOs, are popular vehicles for trading the credit risk of a portfolio of assets. Following a brief summary of the development of the synthetic CDO market, I draw on recent innovations in modeling to present a pricing model for CDO tranches that does not require Monte Carlo simulation. I use the model to analyze the risk characteristics of the tranches of synthetic CDOs. The analysis shows that although the more junior CDO tranches – equity and mezzanine tranches – typically contain a small fraction of the notional amount of the CDO’s reference portfolio, they bear a majority of the credit risk. One implication is that credit risk disclosures relying on notional amounts are especially inadequate for firms that invest in CDOs. I show how the equity and mezzanine tranches can be viewed as leveraged exposures to the underlying credit risk of the CDO’s reference portfolio. Even though mezzanine tranches are typically rated investment-grade,...
