Executive summary
This report have the objective of help Barnet council attract businesses to Barnet in order to save their high street, town centre and local market. The objective of this report has been divided into 3 sub-objectives: * To investigate why business are not attract to the Barnet area * To investigate the reasons why customers are not attract to the Barnet area * To investigate future improvements and developments that can be done in the Barnet Town Centre
Introduction
Barnet council was created in 1965 when the boroughs of Finchley and Hendon became unified with three urban district councils to form the London Borough of Barnet. (www.barnet.gov.uk)
The Barnet high street is a well-known district centre and has the name as well of Chipping Barnet, referred to Barnet Market, which is still in existence today. As well as being home to The Spires Shopping Centre, which offers High Street names and a good sized supermarket, there are also a number of independent shops as well as an array of restaurants, cafes and bars located on the High Street. Situation
Unfortunately due to the recession a significant number of town centres have been badly hit. Well known retailers such as Woolworths, Borders, MFI, Habitat and Threshers have gone into administration. ( barnet.moderngov.co.uk ) Bank and building society branches have been shut as consolidation takes place; estate agents have closed as housing market activity has collapsed and pubs and restaurants have shut as consumers have cut back.( www.statistics.gov.uk)This combined with the increase in the on-line retail market and the dominance of the major supermarkets, particularly through their local/metro formats, has had a major impact on the high street with vacancy rates increasing substantially. (barnet.moderngov.co.uk) The Barnet high street in one of the many town centres being affected by the recession and requiring a new face in order to attract more customers and visitors to the high street.
Problem Statement
The report presented here addresses the problem relevant to the vacancies shops inside the Spires shopping centre and the problems regarding attract new visitors to the high street.
Previous reports showed that have a gap in the market for improvements inside the Spires shopping centre. (ww.barnetresidentsassociation.org.uk) Barnet high street is a historical area and has a potential of growth and development that can improve the community in the Barnet area. Therefore, the Face group Research Agency have research in deep the issue, in order to gain more knowledge about the situation and find out customer and visitors’ opinion regarding the High street, the improvements they think can be done and the reason why customers are not attract to Barnet area.
Research Process
First, we have to define the problem (see problem above), after that we have to know the objectives of the research (see the next section). The third step is to create a questionnaire that can provide all the data needed to achieve the objectives of the research. Fourth, we conduct interviews inside the spires shopping centre in order to get the results of the survey. The last step is to analyse the results, determine the conclusion, and prepare the research report.
Research Objectives
This research is regarding the Barnet High street revamp.
Objectives
The objective of the research is: * To investigate why business are not attract to the Barnet area * To investigate the reasons why customers are not attract to the Barnet area * To investigate future improvements and developments that can be done in the Barnet Town Centre
The questions created for the survey need to contribute to answering the problems above that we believed would satisfy our research objective.
Method
In this section all the methods used for the research will be specified.
Research Approach
The method used to collect information was a questionnaire. This method has chosen because is cost- effective and is a way of obtain relevant responses. The Questionnaire will allow interaction between the interviewer and the people answer the questionnaire, accomplishing a more effective response. This method was chosen in order to target customers/visitors inside the Spires shopping centre that we believe would satisfy our research objective.
In order to speed up the data collection process, we have sent 4 members of staff of the face group to the spires shopping centre to collect the data necessary for the research by asking the questionnaire question the visitors of the Spires and writing down the answers.. Every member of staff had to interview 5 people each in order to get the information for the research. With the results from the questionnaire the face group will be able to identify potential opportunities and improvements that can be made inside the Spires shopping centre.

Collection
We have collect the data for the research by doing a questionnaire and Face to face interviews. This Method was used because the speed and cost advantages. The sampling will be a non- probability sampling and will be convenience and judgement. This type of sampling does not give equal chances for all the population to be selected. The population selected need to possess equal characteristic. We selected the research sampling using the Sample Plan methodology.
Sample Plan
The sampling used was a non- probability sampling, convenience and judgement. To use the sampling technique, we have decided to make interviews on 20 people inside the Spires shopping centre randomly that we thought were knowledgeable about the area and spires shopping centre situation.
We recognize that the method used is not statistically valid, but this needs to be balance with the objectives of the research and the information needed for the project.
Limitations
The Limitations for the research were: * Not all the people passing inside the shopping centre were willing to do the questionnaire and answer the questions. * The Face group didn’t ask permission on the Spires shopping centre Management team and the interviews had to be stopped, unable the Face group team to conclude the 20 interviews.

Conclusion and recommendations
The conclusion and recommendation showed below are based on the results providing on the report.
Conclusions
Based on the analysis and research process, we can conclude that:

* The retail units inside the Spires are too small to attract major retailers * The frontage to the High Street is essentially the secondary entrance and undersells the centre * The Spires car park is inadequate * The interior presentation of the Spires shopping centre is dated with a jumble of architectural styles
Recommendations

* Improving the mix of land uses, primarily for shops (at ground floor level) but also residential, leisure, employment and community uses; * Improving public transport and pedestrian and cycle connections; * Improving quality of buildings and public spaces; * promoting a safer and more secure environment; * creating a clear role for the town centre in respect of planned growth elsewhere such as at Brent Cross.
