Lab 1 – Introduction to Science

Exercise 1: The Scientific Method

Dissolved oxygen is oxygen that is trapped in a fluid, such as water. Since many living organisms require oxygen to survive, it is a necessary component of water systems such as streams, lakes, and rivers in order to support aquatic life. The dissolved oxygen is measured in units of parts per million (ppm). Examine the data in Table 4 showing the amount of dissolved oxygen present and the number of fish observed in the body of water the sample was taken from and then answer the questions below.

QUESTIONS

1. Make an observation – Based on the data in Table 4, describe the relationship between dissolved oxygen content and fish populations in the body of water. Discuss the pattern observed in the data set.

Answer = quantitative because you can measure the dissolved oxygen and number of fish observed

2. Do background research – Utilizing at least one scholarly source, describe how variations in dissolved oxygen content in a body of water can affect fish populations.

Answer = “Dissolved oxygen is necessary to many forms of life including fish, invertebrates, bacteria and plants. These organisms use oxygen in respiration, similar to organisms on land. Fish and crustaceans obtain oxygen for respiration through their gills, while plant life and phytoplankton require dissolved oxygen for respiration when there is no light for photosynthesis 4. The amount of dissolved oxygen needed varies from creature to creature. Bottom feeders, crabs, oysters and worms need minimal amounts of oxygen (1-6 mg/L), while shallow water fish need higher levels (4-15 mg/L)⁵. Microbes such as bacteria and fungi also require dissolved oxygen. These organisms use DO to decompose organic material at the bottom of a body of water. Microbial decomposition is an important contributor to nutrient

...of financial engineering’ section of the syllabus. The reference to Greeks will become clear as we proceed. WHAT IS AN OPTION? The definition in finance is quite similar to that in every day language, i.e. an option is the right but not the obligation to perform a certain action. More specifically in finance it means that if we buy a call option we have the right but not the obligation to buy: • a fixed amount; • at a fixed time; • at a fixed price; • of the underlying instrument. On the other hand if we buy a put option we have the right but not the obligation to sell: • a fixed amount; • at a fixed time; • at a fixed price; • of the underlying instrument. TABLE 1: OPTION TERMINOLOGY Call option Put option Exercise price/Strike price In the money Out of the money American Option European Option Premium Traded Option Over the counter option Let us commence with a summary of the terminology surrounding options. This is given in Table 1 and many of the terms should be familiar from the foreign exchange and interest rate exposure sections of the syllabus. USES OF OPTIONS Options have two major uses on financial markets, speculation and hedging. Figure 1 gives an example of how speculators can use options to gamble on share price movements. It will be noted that the payoff from the option investment is far more volatile than from the straight share. This is because with the option, Barney is specualting on the movement in the share price rather than the share price itself. He has...

...Kotler 1. Define Marketing and Outline the steps in the Marketing Process? Marketing is an organizational function and a set of processes for creating, communicating, and delivering value to customers and for managing customer relationships in ways that benefit the organization and its stakeholders. The steps in the marketing process are: Situation analysis → Establishing objectives → Selecting the target market→ Developing the marketing mix → Implementation and control. 2. Why is it important to have Marketing as part of the Strategic Plan of an entity? This is because, in reality, nearly all strategic planning questions have marketing implications. In fact, the two major strategic planning questions --What products should we make? And what markets should we serve? --are clearly marketing questions. How do they all fit together in the overall organization of a company? Organizations bring managers and employees together to participate in cross-functional teams. This team members are responsible for all activities involving their products and customers. And marketing managers work closely with team members from production, finance, human resources, and other areas to devise plans that address all concerns. In well-managed organizations, a direct relationship exists between strategic planning and the planning done by managers at all levels. If done properly, strategy planning results in a clearly defined blueprint for management action in...

...FREE ENTERPRISE Activities TO THE TEACHER Free Enterprise Activities relate important economic concepts taught in the text to the market economy. Each activity reinforces an aspect of the American free enterprise system. Many activities challenge students to play the role of an entrepreneur, underscoring the key part played by those who assume the necessary risks to develop a business. Other activities help students understand the roles of government, labor, consumers, and the global economy in American free enterprise. CREATING A CUSTOMIZED FILE The individual booklets in the Teacher’s Classroom Resources provide a wide variety of supplemental materials to help make economics meaningful to students. These resources appear as individual booklets in a carryall file box. There are a variety of ways to organize your classroom resources. Three alternatives are given here: ■ Organize by category (all activities, all tests, etc.) ■ Organize by category and chapter (all Chapter 1 activities, all Chapter 1 tests, etc.) ■ Organize sequentially by lesson (activities, quizzes, and other materials for Chapter 1, Section 1; Chapter 1, Section 2, etc.) Regardless of the organization you choose, you may pull out individual activity sheets from these booklets, or you may photocopy them directly from the booklets and file the photocopies. You will then be able to keep original booklets intact in a safe place. Copyright © by The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc., All rights reserved....
