Theodosius II (405-450) known as or Theodosius the Younger, and Theodosius the Calligrapher, was the emperor of the Eastern Empire from 408 to 445. He is known for several significant accomplishments during his reign. One of them is the founding of the University of Constantinople in 425. The university had 31 chairs, 16 in Greek and 15 in Latin. Some of the subjects were “law, philosophy, medicine, arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, music and rhetoric”. The second accomplishment was the establishment of Theodosian Code (Codex Theodosianus) that was published in 438. He attended schools in Caesarea, Constantinople, and Athens. He met St. Gregory of Nazianzus, and they became good friends. Later, he established a “school of oratory” in Caesarea practiced law. After some time, he chose to be a monk and found a monastery in Pontus, where he administered for 5 years. After establishing several different monasteries, he was became bishop of Caesarea in 370. He fought against Arianism and due to his efforts, the Nicene orthodoxy triumphed over Arianism in the East. Also, he took measures in order for the denunciation of Arianism at the Council of Constantinople in 381-382. He studied rhetoric under Libanius, a well-known orator during that period of time. At first, in 374 he was anchorite in the mountains, but because of his poor health he had to Antioch in 386, and there he became a priest. In 398, he became a Bishop of Constantinople. He believed that teachings of Constantinople on the scripture was better than Alexandria. He also, supported the literal interpretation of the text and was against Arianism. The Empress Eudoxia was his most powerful enemy. Because she was offended by his sermons against her, the emperor exile St. John.
