The National Alliance for Health Information Technology defined interoperability as the ability of different information technology systems and software applications to communicate, to exchange data accurately, effectively, and consistently, and to use the information that has been exchanged (Olaronke & Rhoda, 2013) Interoperability is important because it enables medical organizations to operate much more efficiently; it makes it easier for staff to manipulate information quickly; it enhances safety and the quality of care ( What is Interoperability, 2014).
