Introduction Melanie Simpson is a 10-year-old Caucasian girl. She is a fifth grader attending Bellaire Elementary in Hurst, Texas. Melanie and her family reside in a house in Hurst. Her family consists of her mother, her mother’s boyfriend, and her older sister and brothers. She never got the chance to build a relationship with her father because he left when she was only a few months old. Therefore, her mother was known as the “head of the household” while she managed to take care of her four children and work constantly to provide for the family. Additionally, Melanie was also enrolled in the school’s Backpack Program, which provided children at Bellaire with food to take home for the weekend for them and their siblings. However, the program ended due to a lack of funding. As a result, Melanie’s mother had to apply for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, to provide food for the family when work did not provide enough money. Currently, Melanie’s mother and her boyfriend have been in an on-and-off relationship over the past year.

The four types of child abuse include physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect. Early American practices in regards to orphaned or dependent children reflected the beginning of neglect of children that still continues to this day (Thomas Jr., 1972). The earliest case that was ever recorded happened in 1655 in Massachusetts with 12-year-old John Walker. In his article, Thomas (1972) included the following descriptions of the injuries the child sustained, which led to his

Cis 150 Case Study

...Case Report #1 Names: James J. Parrott, Daniel Dadi, Kevin Kleier Case: 2.4 – (Jake Baker) Course: CIS150-01 Date: October 2nd, 2011 1) Identify in a couple of sentences the “ethical dilemma” (or ethical question) inherent in the Case selected. Pose an open-ended question that generates many possible answers, not just a question that can be simply answered with a “yes” or “no” response. The ethical dilemma in the Jake Baker case concerns our nation’s most fought for and prided amendment, the freedom of speech. The main issue we, a society, face in this case is the right to feel safe and when does that become violated? We should use our best judgment to distinguish when someone is exercising their first amendment right or if they are stepping over the boundaries into life-threatening remarks. The question we would like to pose is “When should we deem a statement life-threatening?” 2) Identify in a couple of sentences the specific information technology (I.T) components that create the special circumstances for the Case you have selected. Information technology has allowed us to share thoughts and ideas to anyone virtually anywhere as long as they have a computer or a PDA with internet connectivity. This plays a huge role in this case because Jake Baker has found someone whom has his same interest in unique sexual fantasies and is able to communicate with them through the internet. Jake uses three types of IT components which are e-mail, internet and USENET. He...

...Journal of Business Case Studies – Second Quarter 2006 Volume 2, Number 2 Case Studies In Marketing Research Donald K. Hsu, (Email: yanyou@hotmail.com), Dominican College ABSTRACT The use of case studies for Marketing Research has been examined. Starting with a topic selection, students collected the background information from various sources. A focus group was conducted to gather detailed information. A questionnaire was designed for an in-depth survey of the general public. Using mall intercept, 100 or more convenient samples were collected from the questionnaire. SPSS software was used to analyze this data. Then a final report with possible recommendations was written. During the course of this research, students made face-to-face interview with senior managers or CEO, selected appropriate Harvard Business School cases, did research using Internet or library resources, and added much real-life learning to the theoretical in-class knowledge. INTRODUCTION V ase studies in Marketing Research have attracted much interest for global researchers. During the last two years, participants at the European Applied Business Research Conference presented findings in marketing related topics: 56 papers in 2003 and 25 papers in 2004. Out of the 81 papers, 24 reported work on marketing research. Cho and Ha (2004) measured consumer behavior by surveying 300 people on two brand names, Chow et al (2003) studied the environment friendly (eco-label) issues on the...

Ust Global, India: Delivering Software Service Solutions

...UST Global, India: delivering software service solutions Balakrishnan Menon Balakrishnan Menon is a Professor in the DC School of Management and Technology, Idukki, India and Research Scholar in the School of Management Studies, Karpagam University, Coimbatore, India. 1. Introduction When the founder Chairman of US Technology Private Ltd (UST) Late Mr G. A Menon wanted to set up a software company in Trivandrum, the capital city of the communist party dominated state of Kerala in the year 1999, many people close to him warned that he was setting himself up for failure. The state of Kerala was, in those days, labeled as anti-investment and non-conducive to new entrepreneurial ventures, as it was dominated by a work force, controlled by militant trade unionism with a vested interest to keep their flocks together with age-old dogmas and philosophies. However, Mr Menon went ahead with his plan and set up the company in Trivandrum, as he was keen to do something for his home state, even when the top echelon in the Secretariat (head quarters of the state administration machinery) discouraged him. In subsequent years, UST became the largest software exporter from the state of Kerala, to USA and other countries. UST is a fully-owned subsidiary of California-based US Technology Resources LLC. Established on September 1, 1999 with barely 14 employees, the company was set up, as a 100 per cent Export Oriented Unit, to export software services and solutions, in Techno Park, Trivandrum...

Human Behavior in Organizataion

...Case Analysis: 1.1 Hospitals are Driving toward a Leaner Organization Background: To obtain sustainable organizational efficiency and service quality, many hospitals have adopted an Open Systems Perspective by using “lean management” procedures borrowed from leading car manufacturers, in an effort to “reduce and remove waste from work processes”. These processes improved organizational efficiency reduced costs and provided better patient care. i What ‘seems’ to be the Problem: Secondary Symptoms Full waiting rooms, long wait times, inefficient use of supplies and budgets, needless stress and high mortality rate is feedback from the external environment that the hospitals are not meeting the needs of their stakeholders, or fitting in with their environment. Before adapting lean management processes, hospital staff and patients alike shared the burden of what appeared to be the inevitable consequences of health care delivery and a closed systems perspective.ii These problems are manifestations of organizational deficiencies which negatively affect the quality of patient care, the distribution of hospital resources and employee morale. The Real Reasons Hospitals are Facing Difficulties: Primary Problems The secondary symptoms are indicative of underlying issues, highlighting their poor organizational-environmental fitiii and the ineffectiveness of communication between Internal Subsystems.iv To a large extent hospitals have not adapted to their external environment nor have hospitals...

Restitance to Information Technology Implementation

...Lapointe & Rivard/Resistance to IT Implementation RESEARCH ARTICLE A MULTILEVEL MODEL OF RESISTANCE TO INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IMPLEMENTATION1 By: Liette Lapointe Faculty of Management McGill University 1001 Sherbrooke Street West Montreal, Quebec H3A 1G5 Canada liette.lapointe@mcgill.ca Suzanne Rivard HEC Montreal 3000 Côte Ste-Catherine Road Montreal, Quebec H3T 2A7 Canada suzanne.rivard@hec.ca of the nature of the relationships between these components and (2) refine our understanding of the multilevel nature of the phenomenon. Using analytic induction, we examined data from three case studies of clinical information systems implementations in hospital settings, focusing on physicians’ resistance behaviors. The resulting mixeddeterminants model suggests that group resistance behaviors vary during implementation. When a system is introduced, users in a group will first assess it in terms of the interplay between its features and individual and/or organizational-level initial conditions. They then make projections about the consequences of its use. If expected consequences are threatening, resistance behaviors will result. During implementation, should some trigger occur to either modify or activate an initial condition involving the balance of power between the group and other user groups, it will also modify the object of resistance, from system to system significance. If the relevant initial conditions pertain to the power of the resisting group vis-à-vis the system...

...Course: Name Intrusion Detection System Yours Name Professor’s Name [optional] DOS: University The fear of malicious attack has made us aware to secure our computer systems. Earlier, the information and data were stored in a central computer system but now it has been moved to the cloud like environment. These internet based technologies has made flexible data access and motivated mobile workforce but it has also increased danger of being attacked. One loop hole can harm your organization or breach your private data. Firewalls are used to secure the networks but they are not sufficient when these systems are becoming so vast. These now can be protected using intrusion detection system (IDS) which are used on two level- host level (HIDS) and network level ids (NIDS). HIDS aim to protect single computer systems which are capable of detecting any malicious activity to be attacked on that particular computer system. These are also called sensors and are required for every machine. They increases the security as it is impossible to attack on so many NIDS installed on each system. These sensors monitor the data being passed and the events going on the system in which it is installed. HIDS are heavily dependent on audit trails and are manufacturer dependent. HIDS are capable of detecting who is using the system and can trace any improper activity with specific id. They are enough capable of working in switched topology environment and can also work on encrypted environment...
