The ending of Who Would Have Thought It? by María Amparo Ruiz de Burton ends with a statement from Mr. Cackle, “you know it and so does the nation” (298), as a relating to two of her central criticisms of America, the opportunism to achieve more wealth and power and the uncaring government, with this final bit of satire. In the end of this section, the younger Cackles are proposing their new plan to join with the Democrats, opposing Grant, and Mr. Cackle firmly agrees, closing off the novel. This phrase from Mr. Cackle looks more toward the nation going forward, optimistic that the Cackle family will continue to take advantage of their new political situation. However, methods of getting power have been a theme often critiqued in the novel. …show more content…
Cackle states that a relationship with the Democrats will be good for the nation, he is suggesting that this kind of opportunism, even including shifting sides a little bit, will be good to advance his family’s political gain. As the novel states, “during the war, the prominent politicians and fortunate generals took precedence for a short time over the moneyed men” (119). Therefore, the Cackles, who have gained position through their political positions, have now become members of the highest class and wish to stay there through any means possible, even joining with their former enemies. The Cackles clearly feel at home in the government, standing in the rotunda “as if it had been erected for him especially…suited to his own magnificence and importance” (109). This theme ties back to the earlier events between Lola, Mr. Hackwell, and Julian. Mr. Hackwell has gained money by marrying Mrs. Norval, but even that is not enough to stop him from switching sides again to maneuver to try to trick Lola into marrying him (249). This kind of deception amongst the families to maintain power and money is critiqued in this novel, being a strong point of Ruiz de Burton’s satire towards the upper class, New England society. ...First Essay Discovery Draft “Young people need models not critics,” has got to be everything I’ve ever tried to explain to other adults in six simple words. I feel as though it’s in an adult’s nature to judge the younger generation in ways that no one would like to be judged. Although their assumptions could be true some assumptions are literally ridiculous. Some adults criticize our every move, some not as much as others, but for the ones who do there’s a pattern in their behavior. After they point out our flaws and mistakes, adults switch up and do the same thing they never told us to do. Now I completely understand when an adult wants us to do the right thing and not follow in their footsteps, but a lot of the younger generation goes with the slogan “seeing is believing.” In my own opinion talk is cheap, and I would rather see something actually happen in the case of critiquing. Fix yourself before you try and fix somebody else’s mistakes. Being the age that I am, I’m only speaking from the younger generation’s side.
