The On Your Own project is to allow students to have a feel and understand the French culture through physical contact outside of the virtual classroom. For my On Your Own project, I decided to go to a Café Rolle and try their cuisine. I had been prolonging this assignment throughout the semester mainly because I would have to try new food. My original plan was to just stay at home and compare movies as my assignment. However, my boyfriend wanted me to try and explore the world and try the cuisines. My boyfriend, Eugene, and I decided to finally go and try out Café Rolle on December 4, 2015. I decided to bring Eugene with me mainly because it was his idea. One of those reasons mainly being that it was in Sacramento. I decided on Café Rolle because it was also recommended to me by a mutual friend whom have taken this very class just last semester. She said that the food was good and that my boyfriend would like it. I also chose this particular thing to do because I were limited on time as well as food choices. I was limited on time mainly because it was hard to decide where to go and when we both would have time. I had many choices before hand, such as visiting a cathedral or trying some French cuisines in San Francisco during our short Thanksgiving break. There were many other French cuisine restaurants and other French activities around Sacramento however, Café Rolle was the only restaurant that looked very good and it was on “Diner, Drive – ins, and Dives”, which means that it must be worth trying. Café Rolle was also the closest one to campus and had good reviews. Both Eugene and I are biological majors, which means that we were jammed packed with constant biological assignments and studying. Another reason I chose this particular activity is because I am a very picky eater, which my boyfriend hates, so it is hard to go to somewhere. As I have mentioned, the food and the surrounding was amazing with French influences all around. An educational connection that I can make is with the cuisine chapter in the textbook. Although Café Rolle has cuisines that are based from Lyon since the chef is originally from there, there are different flavors from through France. The meals and flavors at Café Rolle are more specific to the central/east areas of France. This restaurant has different French cheeses that are incorporated into the dishes. This restaurant is known for their fresh pate that is cooked daily for freshness. The different cuisines and cheese that is incorporated in this restaurant has a connect to chapter 7 of our textbook. Another educational connection that I can find between the activity and our class was the words being spoken. During our first week, we learned some French words through our quiz. The conversations being spoken as well as some of the French greetings did connect with the quiz. For example, upon entering the restaurant, I was greeted with a “Bonjour” and given a glass and a pitcher of water. Overall the experience that I have learned from this activity was pretty amazing. I enjoyed the food and the environment. I also learned that there is more than one type of pate.
