Cahokia Cahokia was an Indian society which reaches across a part of the Midwest. It was the largest society that has been discovered by archaeologists to date. Across the four thousand acre settlement they had a chain of mounds that were used for both burial sites and platforms for buildings such as the chief’s house. Among the largest of the mounds is “Monks Mound” which is over ten stories tall. Even though this settlement is a major part of America’s history, many people don’t even know it exists. The reason Cahokia has been so easily forgotten is because it is foreign for people to think that the Indians made their own cities. When we look at Indians we always think of the hunter-gatherer type which is nomadic and constantly moving around
