The Accomplishments of Canada’s First Female Senator Since the 1920s, Canada has made a multitude of improvements in terms of equal rights for women. However, there was once a time when women were not considered “persons” according to the British North America Act. That is why the appointment of Mrs. Cairine Wilson to senator was such a big moment for Canadian history. The accomplishments Wilson made throughout her career cleared the path for millions of other female Canadians, and are what makes her worthy of the title of “Canada’s Greatest”. She was appointed by Prime Minister Mackenzie King after the conclusion of the Persons Case. At the time, many had assumed that Emily Murphy, a well known Canadian Feminist Activist, would be appointed. However, Wilson was chosen instead, as she was the perfect trophy wife stereotype; she raised the kids, threw parties, and was married to a Liberal Member of Parliament. King probably did not think she was as driven as Murphy. But, the aforementioned accomplishments are evidence enough that King had been mistaken. Despite people underestimating her, Wilson proved herself to be a dedicated politician who saved the lives of others and stood up against the passiveness of the Munich Agreement. Her ability to do the most she could with her power despite what others thought is what makes her a role model to look up to. Cairine Wilson, as illustrated by her incredible accomplishments, efforts in the Second World War, and expectation-shattering career, is Canada’s Greatest Person. No one else was more qualified to be Canada’s first female senator than her. Evidently, her accomplishments signify a milestone in Canada’s development as a
