...In 1715, newly-weds, Gabriel and Esther Cordes Marion built their dream home on the Western branch of the Cooper River in South Carolina. The land along the river proved to be fertile and full of potential, but ensured time and hard work if the Marion’s were to reap the benefits. Over the next 17 years, the Marion’s would have six children to help satisfy the regular tasks of rural life. In 1732, Esther Cordes Marion gave birth to her youngest son, Francis Marion. At birth he was feeble and small in size. In Mason Locke Weems’s published biography of Marion, he writes, “I have it from good authority, that this great soldier, at his birth, was not larger than a New England lobster, and might easily enough have been put into a quart pot." The likeliness that an infant of this condition...

...Children do not know how to play Annotation by Jane Prince, associate professor in psychology at the University of Glamorgan, Wales. The economical problems for the toy vendors are the consequence of a disturbing childhood development. There is less need for toys, because most of the children do not know how to play anymore. Instead of the traditional toy world, that has earlier been filled with toy soldiers, ball games, cars and dolls, children now surround themselves with electronic games and impression in pictures and sound from television. Children, even toddlers, have lost the ability to invent a play world for themselves. Several factors have grown to within the last 20 years. Firstly, there is the way children now get affected in the kindergarten or preschool classes: they get evaluated all the time, even on the playground. Secondly, there has also come more pressure from the parents. They are starting to buy educational toys. They forget, that kids can learn through play with toys, which apparently are without any educational purpose. Many parents think, that kids have to be capable users of computers from an early moment in their lives. They have to navigate between the icons on the screen and develop coordination between eye and hand. But ball games have always done the last thing, and while there are advantages with coming to grips with computers, there are many advantages for kids by playing with toys. Furthermore, television decides what toys kids...

... During the Gilded Age period, the United States experienced countless advancements in manufacturing and industrialization by the building of factories and railroad expansions. While America’s economy and manufacturing skyrocketed, agriculture and the farmers who practiced agriculture were slowly being left behind. What once employed more than half of the United State’s population at 59.3% diminished to only 33.3% in a span of fifty years. By the end of 1899, manufacturing occupied half of the population, in addition to the growing numbers of the population involved in mining and construction. (Document 7) Due to the decrease of profits and increase in taxes held against them, farmers gained an increasing amount of discontent and resent towards the government and politics during the 1870-1900 time period. As time progressed, farmer’s discontent with politics and the government dramatically heightened as new obstacles faced the group daily. Farmers were seemingly always being left behind, they were highly susceptible to high-interest rates and taxes, their interest went up from 8% to 40%. In their first couple of years, many farmers would find themselves unable to pay off their taxes and going into debt. Their farms and land, "mules, cows, wagons, plows and often all household furniture" would be put under lien and the farmers would have to become tenant farmers. (Document 2) Deflation in the economy, as well as high taxes, heavily affected the agriculture business; less money...

...Rachel Banes Dr. Mary Sanders HIST 1103-503 10 October 2014 The Patriot Movie Review The Patriot was an American Revolution epic that was portrayed from the perspective of an implacable family. While the movie provided entertainment, there were many historical events that were illustrated in this film such as, the depiction of militias, the implications of battles, and insight to life during war. Due to the bias nature of the film and a few historical inaccuracies, the nationalism in this movie becomes overwhelming. This film was set in the 1770’s in early South Carolina. Benjamin Martian, an ex French and Indian war icon, is the father of seven children who rejected a proposal to go to battle and be apart of the Continental Army. While trying to avoid any involvement in the battle, the war comes close to home and the leading antagonist Colonel Tavington killed Thomas, his 15-year-old son. Martin began seeking revenge by creating a militia that consisted of peasants and farmers. The militia had an objective to keep General Cornwallis in South Carolina. Their efforts were successful through their strategic planning by killing off his men and cutting him off from supplies. Although they succeeded in the surrender of Cornwallis, Gabriel, Martins son, also became a victim of Tavington and was killed. Gabriel’s death evoked one last fight between Martin and Tavington. Martin had the victory over him, which lead to Tavington’s death and helped drive the Continental Army to...

...S.W.A.T, also known as Special Weapons and Tactics team, can be defined as “A unit within a police force that is trained to deal with situations of unusual danger, especially when requiring aggressive tactics or enhanced firepower, as in rescuing hostages, thwarting terrorist attacks or assassinations, and subduing heavily armed suspects” (SWAT team, 2017). S.W.A.T. teams are there to respond quickly to dangerous situations and stop the issue as fast and non-violent as they can. SWAT teams started out as support and protection for firefighters and police officers. Basically, most of their duties were of the protecting nature. Soon, everyone realized that a team with highly trained officers would be very beneficial in some cases. The SWAT team was able to deal with a very wide range of incidents that could be defined as dangerous and had training skills way higher than an average patrol officer. Making no offense to officers, but the SWAT team trained specifically to handle major issues. “The Special weapons and tactics concept originated in the late 1960s as a result of several sniping incidents against civilians and police officers around the country” (History of SWAT, 2017). It formed in Los Angeles and was approved by an officer named Daryl Gates, who later became chief of police in L.A. Originally he had S.W.A.T stand for “Special weapons attack team” but later decided that “Special Weapons and Tactics team” sounded better. The SWAT team started out with 15 four-man groups...

...It seems like, that in “Indian Camp” by Hemingway, Nick and his father are doing a father and son trip. Nick’s father who is a doctor, seems plays a big role in this story. But actually Nick is kind of the main character. Uncle Gorge have asked the doctor to come to the Indian camp, where an Indian woman is very sick, she’s going to have a baby. On their way to the Indian Camp, nick is lying in the arms of his father, at the end of the boat. He is very near to his father, and seems to search love of this dad like a little boy. In that case I have to say that Nick is probably about 8-10 years old in this story. At the Indian camp, Nick’s father is trying to explain him what is going on in the little shanty. Nick act’s like he does understand that the woman is going to have a baby, and that it’s normal that she screams. But he clearly wants his father to make the woman stop screaming because he feels sorry for her. While the whole operation nick is standing in the Shanty watching most of the time his father doing his work. I think Nick is kind of scared what is going to happened. The fact that he looked away shows that he doesn’t liked what was going on, he felt bad by seeing another person suffer, but at the same time I think he maybe was a little proud too that his father can save this woman out of pain. After the operation things changed, we now know that uncle Gorge is most likely the father of the baby, and that the husband of the woman killed himself. Before the Doctor could...

...People can be transformed by the experience of discovery, whether it’s physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual or creative. This is reflected in Ivan O’Mahoney’s documentary Go Back to Where You Came From where six Australians are forced to confront the emotional and provocative issue of asylum seekers. Comparatively in Ernest Hemmingway’s short story Indian Camp we follow the adventure of a young boy named Nick who accompanies his father to a Native American camp to assist him in the delivery of a child, while there he experiences both life and death and through this discovery develops a new perception about the damaging impact of fear on the human spirit. In “Go Back to Where You Came From”, Raye, Racquel and Roderick visit the Masudi...

...“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent” – Joe from “The Princess Diaries” (and Eleanor Roosevelt) I have been spending seven weeks at Camp Tevya each summer since the summer before eighth grade. My mom had gotten a job as the Head of Arts and Crafts, and she brought my sisters and me with her to camp. I have never been one of those people who are always loud and bouncing around with all seventy of their friends, so it was a bit of culture shock going to camp for the first time. Everybody was very outgoing and always surrounded by their friends. I had a very hard time fitting in and adapting to the overly extroverted environment. This was doubly hard for me as a camper because I was forced to spend my entire day with the same 21 girls, all of whom had already been friends for at least three years....

...The Boy in the Striped Pajamas Quiz Please write using complete sentence and use your own words for each answer. Be sure to check grammar and spelling. You may write on the quiz sheet, but it is recommended you use own paper for writing answers. 1. Why are Bruno (Asa Butterfield) and Shmuel (Jack) drawn to each other, despite their opposing circumstances? Bruno and Shmuel are drawn to each other simply because they are two kids of similar age that don’t have any friends where they reside. Despite their “political” differences, they were able to relate to one another by playing games and just getting a sense of each other’s daily lives and activities 2. Gretel (Amber Beattie) believes Father (David Thewlis) and his peers in their viewpoints on the persecution of Jews. Through Bruno is even younger than her, why does he question these viewpoints while Gretel does not? Gretel seems to believe in his Father’s viewpoints because she has the mindset of a realist. She backs up her views, along with the viewpoints of her father’s peers with the propaganda that she reads along with her professor’s teachings. Bruno, on the other hand, is more ignorant and naïve, which is very understandable for someone his age. His attitude towards the persecution of Jews is an unbiased one, and that the treatment that they receive is unjust and cruel. He doesn’t really grasp the magnitude of political differences that the Jews and Nazi’s have. 3. Contrast Father with Lieutenant Kotler...

...Queer Cinema Essay One Camp and Drag The stylistic choices camp and drag have been around since the 1920’s. Camp is anything that falls under a category of being kitsch, cheesy, melodramatic, or low brow. It also suggests effeminacy. Drag is simply dressing as a gender opposite the gender one identifies with. Therefore, camp and drag are directly related. These elements add to the overall effect of a film and can either hurt or hinder the success of a film. There are strong elements of both in Johnny Guitar. Johnny guitar is a 1954, Western film that challenges the roles of women in the wild west. The film had a mediocre reception even though it stars film legend Joan Crawford. The story focuses on Crawford’s character Vienna who has builds a saloon out side of town and wants to build her own town once the railroad is built. However, the town’s people, led by Emma Small want her gone. So, Vienna hires Johnny Guitar for protection. This inciting incident is where the story begins. Throughout the trials and tribulations the characters face, camp and drag fuel the plot and the interactions between the characters. Elements of camp and drag are evident through the environment, and scenery and, and Vienna’s wardrobe. Johnny Guitar is essentially a western, however the scenery slightly disagrees. There are two instances where the scenery does not adhere to the rules of a western film. The first is Vienna’s saloon and the second is the Dancing Kid and his gang’s hideaway....

...I wake up to the sound of war. It’s normal now, I’ve been here for a while. My back aches and I have mosquito bites all over my body. I’m forced to sleep on the concrete floor in my camp every night. Last night, I dreamt that I was home with my family, playing with my friends at school and eating a meal at my home. I haven’t had a real meal for so long. I know that I won’t get breakfast this morning, I haven’t eaten breakfast for a month now, since they abducted me. I get a few snacks here and there, just to keep me alive, but it’s never anything good. My commander walks in and yells at us to line up. Everyone stands up and gets into a line, except for a young soldier who refuses to stand up. We all watch as he gets dragged outside to be tortured. Some of us try hard to hold back our tears, but the children who have been here longer, have forgotten how to feel sadness. Our commander leads us outside, and we try to keep our eyes off of the screaming boy. It’s time to get our drugs. One by one, we get a slit cut in our arm, and the drug ‘brown brown’ rubbed into our new wound. It’s my turn. I watch as the knife slides across my arm. It hurts a little, but not as much as it did the first time. My commander rubs the cocaine and gunpowder mixture into my blood stream, and I instantly feel better. I’m addicted. I need to kill. We march in a straight line with our AK47’s in our hands. It’s a long walk, and my legs start to ache and burn. None of us have shoes to wear, so we’ve gotten...
