The article I chose to read was “Can Teen Killers be Rehabilitated?” by Adam Serwer of The Daily Beast. The article talks about teens who have committed horrendous crimes including murder and then discusses whether the teens are able to be rehabilitated afterward and if they will become less or more likely to commit more crimes as they grow older. This article makes some very interesting points on this topic, most of which I agree with.

Teens who have committed these crimes, including Sarah Kruzan and Jacob Ind, both know that their action was not the best of ideas. The story of Sarah Kruzan goes like this, “At 16, Sarah Kruzan was sentenced to life without parole for killing her pimp ‘G.G.’ Despite the fact that G.G. had abused Sarah since the age of 13, when he put her on the street and made her start working 12-hour shifts as a prostitute, the judge in her case decided the nature of the crime was so heinous that she was, essentially, irredeemable. Here is his story, “In 1992, 15 year-old Jacob Ind murdered his mother and stepfather while they lay in bed. His stepfather, Kermode, had sexually abused Jacob and his brother, Charles. Their mother offered no refuge- she would tell Jacob that she “‘hated him’” and “‘wished he had never been born.’” Years later, Ind told a local Colorado news station that he killed his parents because he was too weak to confront them about the situation. He called his actions “‘pure selfishness’” and “‘the coward’s way out.’” His story has a very abusive background as stated in the passage. This abuse led to him murdering his parents.
